Olympics 2008 - Page 3

Anyone else notice the tinge of fear in the coverage of China? "The opening ceremonies in Bejing were very impressive... and also frightening in their hive-like mentality."
It's the middle of summer, what in the hell is there to expect on prime-time network tv? What nonsense.

I kept waiting for an Empire Strikes Back or Triumph of the Will reference from the commentators, but didn't get one. Though, clearly, the choreographer had seen both films.

What opening ceremony doesn't look like that?

Should Mayor Daley succeed in his quest, Chicago's won't. "Hey look, we dyed the river Olympic!"
Hey, I hope Chicago gets '16. That would be great.

A part of the higher ratings could be attributed to homefield pride though, it's our event or an event on our soil so we as Americans feel more invested in it, but I think the events already happened reasoning is probably more prevalent.

Every four years I tell myself not to watch swimming because it's not that exciting it but damn they've hyped the shit out of it and it's been worth watching this year. The 4x100m was well worth staying up to watch last night. Hot damn.
It still amazes me to this day that Atlanta got the games. I have no idea why. Note, please don't take the previous statement as a slam to our favorite Delta hub.

The glorious 4x100 race. (haven´t seen it posted yet, otherwise I apologize.)

That'd be Zhang Yimou, director of HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, and CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER, to name the three films most people here would know. Originally it was to be Zhang Yimou and Steven Spielberg, but Spielberg bailed on co-directing on account of the China/Tibet issue.
Zhang Yimou? Dammit! I wish I knew he was going to be involved. I've been following him since I saw Raise the Red Lantern back in film class in 1996.

I'm off to YouTube to find clips...

Nice work Jan, I'll be certainly checking this out at home. This almost makes up for Tokio Hotel

Getting excited watching the men's gymnastics not only makes me question my sexuality, but I also get a perverse pleasure eating Cool Ranch Doritos while these athletes attempt to accomplish acts of near-superhuman strength.
I just watched that 4-man relay. That was indeed some riveting shit. Got to love that Balmer accent on Phelps.

OK... I'll admit it. I spent the entire opening ceremony thinking they were saying Johnny Mo.
And the men's gymnastics team just gave the most unintentionally comedic series of shout outs in Olympic history.
Phelps is not human. He's the bastard offspring of the Sub-Mariner and Squints from The Sandlot.
I like how Phelps looks like a vague relative of Jim from "The Office".

I just read an article in which the guys swims nearly 50 miles a week amongst other exercises. Of course that doesn't leave much of an outside life. And the whole thing came about because his mom needed for him to do something to keep his ADHD occupied.

Yep, Phelps swims 80,000 meters a week. That's a lot of laps.

I can totally sympathize with his mom. We've got to keep my son occupied constantly because of similar ADHD problems.

The amazing thing to me, in addition to his obvious athletic ability in the water, is his amazing level of stamina. He doesn't seem to get tired. Like all great athletes, he seems to have that "something extra" he can kick in when he needs to.

If Phelps does win the 8 Golds does that make him the greatest athlete of all time? I'm starting to think he's at least in the conversation with the likes of a Jordan.
I could watch the footage of the US team celebrating after the race all day. Just pure unbridled elation.
As a fellow bastard who was diagnosed with ADD I can sympathize (It would also explain why my head is jammed with useless trivia). But what was funny to me was that Phelps apparently injured his back on a bus ride that was too rough (Huh? Note this was sometime a while back) In any case, he's a helluva athlete and those pictures taken at the end of the relay are downright iconic if ya ask me.

I wouldn't get crazy with the "greatest athlete of all time" nonsense. Is he the best damn swimmer in olympic history. Probably, but I'm not a sports guy so I wouldn't know.

Not to mention the obvious thing to point out. That's probably an olympic length pool. I can tell you, swimming one of those was a bitch and a half. Imagine doing that distance all the time.

I'm not a sports guy either but just watching him swim you can sort of make that leap pretty easily. Also the fact that he's the Olympic and World Record holder in pretty much every race can at least qualify that statement, until they're beaten.
It's goddamn mind blowing is what it is.

All sorts of records getting shattered this go around. Fun!

Due to popular demand and probably a helluva lot of bitching, Time Warner Cable has now given my area USAnetworkHD which is great so I now have 3 Olympics channels broadcasting the Olympics in HD.

even better is now I can start watching Psych in HD.
Wow, three olympic channels. Reminds me of the Bronze, Silver and gold cable packages for the '92 games....See what I mean with the trivia.

The Olympic Triplecast was ahead of its time. Actually, it may still be ahead of its time, given that you can't "tivo" all three channels at once.

well comparing yesterday I only had 2 HD olympic channels, 3 is better.

now if they give me MSNBC in HD.. then I'd have like quaddrupal or something...

Yeah, but once you swim an olypmpic length pool and get used to it, every other pool is way too short. I used to be on a swim team and now it sucks going to a pool and doing laps. Every time you get comfortable with your stride, you have to turn again.

I sometimes wonder if ADHD is common among athletes. I know my son excels in the sports that are faster paced (like soccer and basketball) but struggled with baseball. Not for lack of talent but because he would just get bored and look for something else to do.
That possible, I just know I had no interest in sports (I still don't) and was pretty damn introverted. Now I like doing some kind of exercise but that's just a personal thing.

Chinese Olympic Singer Lip-Synced

And the funniest part of the link? Under the video of the girl "singing", for me, it says, "Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory." It's the greatest conspiracy sing Whitney Houston sang/lip-synced the National Anthem at the Super Bowl!

I loved having the Olympics here. Why? Because traffic was fucking awesome for those two weeks or so.
I'd be honestly surprised if anybody in that ceremony wasn't lip-synching.

Funny, they said the exact same thing about LA in '84.

And what about 'dem Lords a Leapin'?! Were they in fact leapin at all?!
First we learn about the CGI fireworks, and now Milli Vanilli sang at the opening.

What will they divulge tomorrow?
The games are actually being held in Albuquerque, NM.

And it was all part of the plot to use tire gages and hidden muslim tactics by the Obama campaign.

Anybody else have no idea what the hell the gymnastic scores mean? Are they scoring out of 17? Whose idea was that? It would have been better if they scored out of 17, then just ratio-ed all the scores down so they'd be out of 10.

Also, the Chinese men's gymnastics scores seemed awfully high considering they had some stumbles/steps outside landing area. Could someone who knows anything about gymnastics tell me if I'm mistaken? Were their routines so hard it didn't matter if they landed them properly?
I heard them saying during the women's competition that if the difficulty of the routine is high enough, the stray step-out isn't a huge deal, only about a tenth of a point.

Yeah, one of the Chinese guys kept having to take a huge step to get back to the corner and nearly scored a 16 on the floor routine last night. Kind of boggled my mind a bit.
The entire Chinese team could have whipped out their little Mao's, jerked it all over Kerri Strugg's face then proceeded sodomizing the judge's grandmothers and they still would have won Gold.

Short of somebody defying gravity and the laws of physics China was going to win. Seriously, watching the men do the bar thing and pull out some awesome shit and basically get a "ho hum. Meh" score summed up what was going to happen for me.
The US men's reaction to bronze was priceless. You'd think they were the next contestants on The Price Is Right.

3rd place! Woo Hoo!

If China had gotten the Bronze entire villages would have been liquidated.
Considering the top two men on the US team were out of the competition, third place is pretty damn good.

Fixed.

I'd love to know the tallest Olympic level gymnasts of all time. For the men ... I'm guessing 5'8". For the women ... I don't know, maybe 5'5"?
