Olympics 2008 - Page 12

I wouldn't say dominated... but SPain never really threatened to stop the US from scoring. Spain is a bad defensive team, and the US is the best offensive team in the world. But all it would have taken is a couple stops and one or two more big threes for Spain to maybe hold the gold. Isn't that out of the realm of possibility.

US Men's Indoor Volleyball for the gold!

Beautiful game.

This is a great closer for the Olympics this year.
The men's basketball final had some of the worst officiating (both ways) I've ever seen in a basketball game. The first quarter you couldn't move without getting whistled. By the fourth there were downright muggings going unnoticed.
I'm getting the distinct impression that the guy who designed this closing ceremony watched a little too much LOGAN'S RUN as a child.

Renew! Renew! Renew! Renew!

So is the mayor of London chosen by a dart tournament down at the pub?
Closing ceremony reminds me of the end of Return of the King
post #557 of 597
Which just so happens to be on TNT right now.
I kinda geeked when I saw Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and Karen Mok at the closing ceremonies.
Costas' poetic recapping is fucking killing me!
Does this thread need a Closing Ceremony now? If so, I want to be one of the guys that climbs the tower and shoots a confetti gun.
I'm Jackie Chan then.
I haven't read this thread at all, so hopefully I'm not duping conversation that's been in here. (Search turned up nothing, but you know what that means.)

I was just told that a version of the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK main theme was used a bunch by NBC during the broadcast. (Possibly quite redone, likely faster.) Verify?
Don't know about that, but they busted out the ubiquitous Dragonheart music for part of their closing credits montage.
I didn't see one minute of the opening or closing ceremonies. But I'm sure I'll be able to buy the commemorative DVD of it from NBC for just $39.95 soon.

Apparently Olympic athletes get laid:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/spo...cle4582421.ece

"There is a famous story from Seoul in 1988 that there were so many used condoms on the roof terrace of the British team's residential block the night after the swimming concluded that the British Olympic Association sent out an edict banning outdoor sex."
Also, they were the biggest Olympics in regards of Ratings. At least in the US.

Thank God I'm not the only one who was reminded of this. If only they had exploded, it would have been perfect.

REP!

I totally got choked up reading THIS STORY about the two Somalian runners, who came in last in their respective heats but serve as inspirational stories about fulfilling your dreams no matter what the odds.

The transfer over to London was underwhelming. The best they had to come over to China for a show was Jimmy Page and one of their pop stars? And David Beckham? On a transforming double decker bus?

Oh, my.

Then again, after Beijing spends tens of billions on the games, and possibly a billion on the opening ceremonies alone, anything would be sad in comparison.

My thoughts kept going to what Freddie Mercury could have done with that venue last night. You could have heard that show from orbit.
China spent an estimated 400 billion Yuan total for this Olympics. I don't think anyone will top that till inflation catches up.

That's $58.5 billion US?

Good closeup action shot of that taekwondo ref right before he gets kicked.

Exactly, what the fuck were they going to do? Have the Doctor and his TARDIS show up? (I would've enjoyed that) Get ready to hear London's games as underwhelming. You heard it first.

"It dawned on me that we'd just won the thing," said McCutcheon, the U.S. coach. "It's a very meaningful moment -- obviously this is the best of times and the worst of times.
"But I'm going to delve into both of those emotions and embrace them accordingly."

McCutcheon's conflicting emotions of joy and grief stemmed from a madman's attack on Aug. 9 in Beijing that killed his father-in-law, Todd Bachman, and seriously injured his mother-in-law, Barbara.

And all in front of his wife, Elisabeth.
Quote:
McCutcheon missed the first three matches of the Games to tend to his family, but then returned at his family's urging. The players welcomed him back, knowing only that playing well was the best thing they could do for everybody.

McCutcheon didn't stick around to celebrate. He had a flight booked back to the States on Sunday evening. He would rather have not talked about the family's pain publicly, he said, but they'd decided to in a way of thanking all those who had reached out to them.

He said he believes he'll look back on the Olympics, on the gold, with a fitting mix of pride and grief.

"You can be happy and feel a touch of sadness as well," he said.

Before the medal ceremony, McCutcheon borrowed a phone from a U.S. Olympic Committee staffer and called his wife, known as "Wiz," a former volleyball Olympian herself.

"You won, you won, you won," she said before he could get anything out.
"There wasn't much left to say," McCutcheon said. "We listened to each other smile over the phone."
Great story here, after everyone said they couldn't do it and the personal tragedy from their coach, they still took home the gold.

BTW I'm curious to hear from our Aussie posters as to whether or not that Mitcham thing is big news? I figure it would've been seeing how the aussies haven't won a diving gold in 84 years.

I saw training footage of this guy. The guy was doing standing flips, something right out a damn video game.
Talking to an Aussie native here at work he says swimming is huge in Australia, so I'd assume diving is too.

Oh yeah, and I'm damn glad someone other than China won a gold in diving. I was becoming disappointed in the even t this year as it seemed no one could pull their shit together to beat the home team.
Yeah especially after the guy prevented the Chineese from sweaping the diving rounds.

I mean I don't follow the sport at all but damn does is that impressive.
I laughed a little bit after seeing the Chinese diver in the back all upset.
Heh
Fidel expressed his "total solidarity" with Angel Matos and his coach. Well, at least this relic is very consistent.
Nobody remembers the Chinese cameo in Athens. Just wait for London. It will rock, and hopefully there'll be no anti-host propaganda in the build up. Remember how it took Costas three days to realize that the "smog" was in fact just a heat haze. It was inevitable how that story was going to disappear. I personally hated the NBC coverage.

Seriously, no offence - but the amount we're spending on the games is minute by comparrison.

Even a US offering with the entire war chest budget going into it wouldn't compare with what we've just seen.

It's going to look shit even if we get Elvis to make a surprise appearance.
So if I'm to believe NBC, Kobe and LeBron single-handedly won the gold medals.
The second half turned in to the Kobe Bryant Show and was painful to watch.

Damn straight. But I would so love to hear the "Lumberjack Song" or the twit Olympics in the opening ceremonies. London: 2012: THE NERD OLYMPIAD!
I'm waiting for the inevitable Andrew Lloyd Weber involvement.

Followed immediately by the German Philophers vs. the Greek Philosophers in a match of Soccer.
And we say goodbye to Beijing with some lasting images, like Spain's Synchronized Swimming Team "Homies" outfit:

Well, they already made that episode.

Shitty or not, it's still one more peripheral reason to go to London. Or Chicago, for that matter: my eldest cousin lives there and his father's already vowed to visit if they get the 2016 Games.

Yeah, I posted that yesterday in the Fact that this exists thread, should have thought to put it here. Beyond the terrible entendre, I'd like to point out the Hamm brothers sound like the lollipop guild.

I don't find many gymnasists who sound like Barry White.
Therre will be no more discussion of Shawn Johnson's taco popping! You're all like little demons on my shoulder. Damn you all.
Man, between this and Obama/Biden being in Beaver county today. You couldn't make this shit up.
It's nice to know that because she's 16 people are really biting their tongues on this one. Taco Poppin' Shawn Johnson! What a scamp!

That would be awesome though.

"Aw baaaybay, I'm about to bust this iron cross, then I'm gonna make sweet sweet love to that pommel horse. Awww yeyeahh."

That it would be. That it would be.
