Alone in the Dark (2008)

Anyone picked this up yet? The reviews coming in have been mixed, skewing on the side of decent. Been looking forward to this for a while and completely forgot it came out this week. Alex? Russ? Anything?

I pre-ordered it for pc, just waiting on an email saying I can download it. Most of the complaints I read about were frustrating controls on the 360 and some checkpoint issues, so I opted for pc. Keeping my fingers crossed, hope it's fun.

This is the one that ATARI has been getting upset over-- couple of European reviews were very low, and they asked them to be removed. They claimed that it was "probably a pirated copy." Heh.

It's always looked like a rental for me. But that's the way this generation's looking - what with RRP's being so high and me only being able to play through most of the single-player-only games once...

Why is this on PS2 instead of PS3?

I read that the PS3 version was delayed until Fall '08.

This will be a rental for me. Darn shame, as I wanted it to Kick major arse!

Wouldn't it be nice if for the PS3 release they address some of the complaints of the current game? Wishful thinking I know, but surely it would be in their interest to release a 'different' version, rather than a delayed port of a flawed game...

I've heard a demo is forthcoming, I'm going to have to try this one out myself. Reviews are all over the place. Like I see IGN UK scored it around 7, but IGN US scored it a 3.5.

Oh, that's cool then. I can wait.

Holy shit this is worse than all the reviews make it out to be.
But that fire looks sweet!
Is it really that bad?

Both the first and third person cameras are terrible. The movement is stilted and tank-like, which makes navigating the small areas of the game very tricky. Instant cheap deaths are plentiful, which is made more irritating by the unskippable dialogue scenes. The inventory system is a nice try, but takes up way too much time to access while you're being beaten down by monsters.

I played it at a friend's place and had the exact same complaint with the shitty movement and the stupid frigging inventory.

Time to wait for a major price-drop, methinks.

I'll be getting this free with my new Radeon HD 4870 video card. I'm still kinda looking forward to giving this a try.

I'm renting this right now via Gamefly but I think I'm gonna send this back. I'm not even far into the game but the first driving segment is pissing me off. I'm making it all the way to the staircase but I got no place to go after that other than out the fucking window to my death.

Give it a fair shake. There's some good stuff in there. The developers are French (if the credits are any indication), and French games always have a hard time with American gamers.

Again, I haven't played the 360 version, just the pc.

That new demo is making it hard to not give this one a shot. Some really fun stuff there.

The atmosphere reaches near Bioshock levels of awesomeness. If it keeps that up for the whole game i could overlook the controls.
There's so many great ideas in this and great production values, but it's all destroyed by the godawful controls.
Well some of those problems might be fixed
post #24 of 25
Some of the controls reminded me of Trespasser...

To beat someone, you need to
- pick up a weapon by the use of a button
- take aim by the use of a button
- pull back the weapon by the use of the stick
- beat him by the use of the stick
- (and finally) then set the weapon on fire to finish it off

Also, the camera system loves to hate you.
That sucks, because graphics are quite neat.

I haven't had the chance to play this yet. Is there still any Lovecraft in there?
