Extended THE NEW WORLD- 10/14/08

Dunno if this is confirmed or a rumor, but I read this here... I just absolutely cannot WAIT to see this. I honestly think it's Terry Malick's best, and it's something I've actually watched each of the last two Thanksgivings. Three more hours in that world? Take me there, Movie Gods.

I dunno. The first cut had more than enough trees, trees, trees...

Personally, I'd peg Days of Heaven as his best film. I love The Thin Red Line and The New World but Malick's affinity for Heidegger is a bit too on the nose in those movies.

See, I'd say Badlands and TRL are Malick's best.
but I love The New World and would enjoy seeing longer versions of all 4 of his films,
which I think are ultimately rather equal in quality.

I thought the UK already had a longer cut?

Badlands. Shit, I think the guy is 4/4, with maybe the weakest being Thin Red Line. Maybe.

Loved The New World so much. Saw the 150 cut theatrically, curious to see this new version. Interesting that the 150 cut has been lost to time. Since the film wasn't exactly a hit, it's probably lost to the ether.

Go to the main page. There's an article about the Wall-E "Devin's Advocate".

This is great news!

Now all we need is the extended THIN RED LINE. It seems like the once beloved Malick is experiencing a bit of a backlash. I hope this version forces a reevaluation.

Dre: Have you seen POCKET MONEY?

Yeah, it should be better. It's interesting, for sure.

Hasn't the 150 minute cut been available for some time?

I have no idea. Has the DVD beaver done a compare? Has anyone?

Arguing which is the best Malick is pretty pointless. I think The New World is actually kind of his weakest film, but any more would be welcome. I'm The Thin Red Line through and through, although Days of Heaven is very close behind..

I don't know that it's pointless, exactly. I think Badlands is clearly his best film; and, though I've only seen it once, I feel fairly confident putting Days of Heaven second on the list.

While I figured The New World would be an even better canvas for Malick's predominant themes than The Thin Red Line was, I didn't find anyone in it as compelling as Witt, Tall, or... whatever Sean Penn's character was named. So I give TTRL the edge. Still, I anxiously await this longer cut.
