Bad Boys II

Thinking about this film the other day (seeing as how I showed it to my gal who absolutely loved it.) Now true, it's not the most intricate plot, best acted, or has the most complex characters but does that mean it's not on it's way to being a classic? Do films really need to have one of those things to be considered classic? Bad Boys II is entertaining enough and has some pretty spectacular stunt sequences.

Basically the question I pose is, will this be considered a classic in it's own right?

I love this movie. It's too fucking over the top not to enjoy it on some level.

Shit just got real.

There's too much labored "humor" for my tastes, but that car carrier chase is some sort of demented masterpiece of wanton destruction.

No. It will not. I think that at some point some aspects of Michael Bay's technical accomplishments (editing, lighting, and sound design work) may become critically acclaimed or "classic", but I doubt any of his films will be.

Hey, I love The Rock and have enjoyed many of Bay's flims (why the hate?), but "classic?"

I strongly dislike this movie. Watch the ridiculous "raid from Cuba" scene back to back with Police Story and see hoe one movie does an incredible chase through an entire village right and one totally fucks it up with too many shots, too much cutting, and nothing resembling a master shot. Bay needed to take some downer on this one and lay off the coke. Jesus.

The hate is due to one film that reeks of shittery: Pearl Harbor. That film defines horrifuckus.

Yeah, but oddly enough it has the best editing(well, most "sedate", at least) of any Bay film. And the actual bombing sequence is great, even if it is probably considered a fuck in the ass to any living veterans of the attack.

As for Bad Boys II, it's equal parts awful and fantastic. It will never be a classic great action movie(Die Hard) or a classic bad one(Commando*), but it's the epitome of Bay's strengths and weaknesses.

*It's okay guys, you can admit it's bad. I love it too.

History will only have room for one Michael Bay movie. My money's on Armageddon. I think it'll go down as his Pulp Fiction.

Let's be clear, though. I'm talking about history. Not favorites or bests.

I feel Bad Boys II is the Commando of the modern era.

Amen. I hope we get another of this ilk when the new modern era shows up any day now.

I love it, it's just so damn over the top. And how long is this thing??

The aforementioned car carrier chase is spectacular. I love how annoyed Will Smith gets at Martin Lawrence in that scene, reflecting the feelings of EVERY VIEWER WATCHING.

There is nothing amazing about that car chase. Nothing. Rule number one for any action scene, car chase, shoot out, kung-fu fight, etc: Make sure your protagonist ACTUALLY FUCKING DO SOMETHING. Having them look at a bunch of cars exploding near them and go "Oh shit!" does not an exciting sequence make. God, that sequence just makes me mad.

Bad Boys II is one of the best cop buddy films ever. My 2 favorite scenes are the LA Freeway chase where the bad guy drops cars off the car carrier, and the invasion of Cuba in the yellow Hummer, truly a classic scene. Bad Boys II should definitely be placed in the classic category.
My favorite cop buddy films
1) Lethal Weapon
2) Lethal Weapon 2
3) Die Hard
4) Die Hard 2
5) Bad Boys II
6) Showdown In Little Tokyo
7) Running Scared (Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal)
8) The Last Boy Scout
9) Lethal Weapon 4
10) Lethal Weapon 3

Nexus-7, Commando is not a bad film at all! It is easily Arnold Schwarzzenegger's 2nd best film after the epic that is...True Lies. While I understand you like Commando...I wouldn't place it on a bad list. I simply do not believe in the term...Guilty Pleasures or good "Bad" films.

This is actually in my top 25 films of the aughts. I remember seeing this in the cinema back in 2004 and seeing a normally reserved British audience just absolutely lose their shit. Right from the start the film is fucking audacious, and really beautifully shot, but once the film hits Cuba it's amazing.

It's not just the audacity of a military assault on Cuba by the Miami Police force, it's the fact that the film just starts to operate in a a completely new reality where the bad guy actually has an army and has a reproduction of the Last Supper being painted in his mansion (with him as Jesus).

The banter between Smith and Lawrence is great and it helps to pave over some of the weaker links (like the kid playing Lawrence's daughter who delivers easily the most painful series of line of the aughts within her first appearance).

For my money Joey Pantoliano is the MVP of the film, he's just amazing as the police chief.

This movie stinks on just about every level conceivably imaginable. So much so that I'm not going to dignify this thread with anymore of my attention.

halofan1, I enjoy...5 of Michael Bay's films.
1) Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen
2) Bad Boys II
3) Transformers
4) The Rock
5) Bad Boys

Armageddon is ok, but not a fave of mine.

whooooooooo that one puckered my butthole!!

Undeniably this is already a classic and one of my favorite movies of all time.

MAHDELS ARE FEELTHY CREATURES!! JOO ARE MORE LIKE... AN AAAANGEL!

I finally saw this movie for this first time. Looks pretty, but I never could muster up any connection with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's shallow characters. (What a waste!) All they did was spout cliched one-liners and argue. By the time it got to Cuba, I was so bored I could only watch it in the background as I did other things.

The actions scenes looked amazing but they felt empty.

That last line of Gabrielle Union's, something like "Yeah I'll put my gun down... RIGHT ON TOP OF THAT LAND MINE!!!" made me hate the movie for a while.

Then I got over it. Happy days!
It's so relentless, disgustingly indulgent and hilariously over the top that I can't help but love it. When I watch the scene in the morgue or the car chase with dead bodies flying all over the road a part of me thinks, "this is worst shit of all time, why am I watching it?" but then I carry on watching it to the end and enjoying the hell out of it. I am weak.
The only reason to watch is some of the more amazing action, specifically the freeway chase.

You're watching the wrong movie if you want emotional connection.

Dumb lines like that make me want to love the movie forever.

This movie's tons of fun. Fuck ya'll.

Which was done better in THE ROOKIE I might add!

It was a sad moment when I was watching Bad Boys II on AMC, and found that Smith's Ferrari was CGI in some cutaway shots. I always thought it was real!

here's a pretty cool behind the scenes of the car chase

I don't necessarily need heavy emotional connection, but I need some kind of connection with the main characters of any movie I see. I've got to care about their motivations, at least a little bit. When I don't, an action scene is lifeless and boring no matter how spectacular it is.

BAD BOYS II is like going to a Japanese Steakhouse. I love it, I eat too much, I feel self-indulgent while I'm there, and I get to see some neat tricks. I only like to go to a Japanese Steakhouse once every five years.

Also just when I think I'm about done eating I blow up half of Cuba.

I was pretty emotionally invested in whether or not Marcus and Mike were finally gonna fuck. Guess I'll have to wait for Bad Boys 3.
Just got finished watching the first Bad Boys again. Funny how it's almost like a quaint indie film compared to Bay's more recent work. Lots of the shots even last for multiple seconds!
Bad Boys II, never gets old. I wish there was a...Bad Boys 3 In 3D, arriving in, 2012, instead of...Men In Black 3!

If only Michael Bay, could up the...BAYhem even more, and team up...The Bad Boys/Transformers/G.I. Joe for the ultimate save our civilization film! That film of course would also be...3D!

bumping this thread for the most ridiculously over the top action movie of the last ten years!

You know why this movie is one of the two best action/exploitation movies of the last ten years (The other is Crank 2)? It's because Michael Bay is a juvenile delinquent with a severe case of arrested development and when he wasn't nominated for Pear Harbor, he said "FINE, FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING SUCK ANYWAY!" and proceeded to whip out his fuckstick and splooge his ID all over the screen with Bad Boys 2 which is why I believe that the movie is a perfect distillation of the mans soul. After seeing BB2, I was actually very excited to see him doing Transformers and thought that if he could have brought that level of OTT insanity to that film then it could have been great. How wrong I was as all three Bayformer movies have been fucking terrible.
