Mathew Sweet- Sunshine Lies

I'm a Mathew Sweet fan. I don't mind admitting it.

He's got 3 songs posted off his new album Sunshine Lies (which comes out at the end of August). Myspace

I don't know what to think of "Flying".

Room to Rock sounds like an edgy song off of Altered Beast.

"Byrdgirl' is more of the Mathew Sweet that I enjoy. I don't know what to think of these songs as singles.. but it sounds like a major shift from the Kimi Ga Suki disc.

anyone else a fan.. DaveB??

I can't speak for DaveB or anyone else, but I'm an unabashed fan of Matthew Sweet, and this news excites me no end. I enjoyed most of "Living Things," but that is probably my least favorite of his albums.

I'll have to wait until I get home to check out the new tracks, but I'm already looking forward to that, so thanks for bringing this to my attention, neaux.

I remember last year, he was hyping up a potential new album called "Rock Bottom," but that never materialized. I wonder if this is what happened to that project.

Why would anyone be ashamed to admit that they are a Matthew Sweet fan? Girlfriend is one of the best albums ever and the two follow-ups are pretty damn great. I haven't kept up with him as much for the last few years; maybe I should.

"Blue Sky on Mars" and "Kimi Ga Suki" are both solid albums all around, and I really like pretty much every song on each. "Living Things" is pretty decent, and has some really good songs, but it's kind of weak overall. Not a bad album, but definitely brining up the rear as far as his output goes.

I still need to check out that album he did with Susanna Hoff, in which they cover 60s pop tunes. The stuff they have posted on their MySpace page is not too shabby.

Based on the Wikipedia page, it sounds like it's the same album. Sweet's manager jumped the gun with the title.

I'm a big fan of his Girlfriend to In Reverse output (with Blue Sky on Mars being the only one of those I wouldn't unhesitatingly recommend), but I got a little disenchanted around the time he threw his hat in with the Thorns. I didn't care much for Living Things and haven't heard Kimi Ga Suki (which I'd probably like, given the backing band, but just never bothered picking up). Under the Covers was kind of fun, though, and I like the sound of the new tracks. Sweet needs that dry, piercing Richard Lloyd guitar sound to cut through the bubblegum sometimes (although In Reverse worked without him).

Hmmm...I must have missed "In Reverse," as I don't think I've ever even heard of that one. I'll have to check it out.

I actually liked The Thorns album, and put it on whenever I need something laid back, but I'm definitely more partial to the tunes on which Sweet was obviously the guiding force. My current gal pal LOVES that disc, though. She can't get enough of it.

It's his attempt at simultaneously updating the Phil Spector wall-of-sound thing and staying true to the album title by using a lot of backwards guitars and such. The production would come off as gimmicky if the songs weren't so damned good, and they didn't work so well with the overblown recording techniques.

Sweet crams all of his grandiose, self-indulgent impulses into it and, as if to prove that point, he ends it with a long, multi-part pop epic called "Thunderstorm" that's way better than it has any right to be. Some of my favorite songs of his are on In Reverse.

Kimi Ga Suki is a wonderful album that can be listened to, from start to finish.

I really listen to Altered Beast and 100% Fun often, I need the Girlfriend disc but never get around to re-buying it. It disappeared after college.

After fulling listening to Sunshine Lies, it's a pretty good album.

its another "altered Beast" in that there are 2 sides to the cd. Sunshine Lies and Sunrise Eyes are the two songs that divide the CD into the Matthew Sweet "rocker" and Matthew Sweet "songbird" that we all know and love.

really enjoying Room to Rock, Pleasure is Mine, Daisychain and Back of my mind.. and of course Byrdgirl.

This CD was hard to find (I had to buy it at FYE??!!)

Neaux: I agree that Kimi ga Suki is a great listen; it's one of the most effortlessly good and awesome albums I can name.

Big fan of the new record. I like "Pleasure Is Mine" a lot, too, and "Around You Now." Great stuff.

If you do pick up another copy of Girlfriend, check out the recent deluxe edition with the bonus disc full of demos, etc.
