Red Faction: Guerrilla

No longer a 1st person shooter, Volition brings it back to the red planet in a open world sand box with the geomorph of old brought back with on the fly building distruction...

I have to say, this looks like a day one purchase for me...

Somehow I never put together that the Ultor Corporation in Red Faction was the same Ultor Corporation as in Saint's Row before now. It's like Volition's version of Armacham Technology, Inc. (dodgy megacorp in a couple of Monolith games).

Bumped because hey, Open Beta for all now!

PS: You're going to have to sign up for the free Fileplanet membership, but since I already had mine from days long past it was no biggie.

Looking forward to smashing your faces with my sledgehammer online this weekend...

I don't accept their BS excuse of "showing the character" for choosing 3rd person.
Kinda pissed I missed this at E3 now, it looks like a blast.

Damn. I want that hammer.
I'm down. I had a blast with Red Faction 1 and 2, and I can never get enough mass destruction in my video games.
I played the multiplayer beta awhile back. It didnt exactly play really smooth. With the 3rd person it felt really clunky. The aiming & melee combat just felt off. Granted it was hella fun destroying stuff. Im sure in the single player the whole destructive environments could really make some awesome scenarios. But like i said, it just didnt feel right, so unless they make a few changes im not even sure if i would consider this a rental.
Thanks for the heads up... I was wondering if anyone here had played the Beta. Hopefully they've worked on it more since then.

It's out in Febuary 2009 isn't it?

Seen some Pre-order boxes at EB games.
What the fuck? The demo's on the PSN and despite that shitty looking video, it handles rather well.

The destruction is definitely completely different to what we've seen in the FrostBite engine - this stuff falls apart like i've never seen.

Fuck. As for the gameplay, difficult to tell from the little i've played but then - i'm pretty sure it feels on-par with the original. Quirky, but oddly satisfying.

EDIT: Combat is wonderful. Light, but enemies don't take ridiculous amounts to kill - it seems to reward heashots and the weapons themselves (despite being a bit odd to select) sound and handle really well.

I was completely ignoring this after that terrible promo video, now it's heavily on my radar for a pickup.
Gave the demo a quick run through and it feels a bit better then what i remember. Everything is a lot smoother and more faster paced it seems. Switching weapons is a bit more complicated then it should, but that's a minor complaint. In the end it doesn't feel like anything spectacular. Just Mercenaries 2 on Mars.
I'm glad i'm not the only one who thought of Mercs then. Seeing the size of the actual space you get to play in made me realise this was another contender for "free roaming" status. Still, using the mech was possibly even more fun than using the nuke in Mercs - and that fucker was satisfying.

If weapon switching is the biggest problem I have to deal with, i'm slightly worried i've got another game to actually buy.

I just made a building collapse off a slight cliff taking a walk way with it.

I am lost for words on how well this system works. The Jihad jeep/truck trick works a treat especially when said truck has plowed into the middle of the target building.

Day one.
Haha, I saw that cliff building and levelled the fucker too - bridge came down beautifully.

As has been said - it's Mercs 2 on Mars. I loved Mercs 2.
That looks like some damn fun.
Fun demo but couldn't they use the d-pad to switch weapons like every other game in existence?
Oh man. Being able to strap a bunch of charges to a truck, plow it into a building, hop out and take most of the building out in one boom where the whole thing collapses in on itself? SO AWESOME.

Was exactly what I thought. It's hardly a deal-breaker though and the quick-select has some minor value (even if what it switches to seems a bit odd)

The old Jihad-Jeep trick never fails.
So yeah, the more I play this demo, the more I'm digging this game. Toppling a huge structure with a well-placed jihad jeep and a couple bombs for that extra push is so much fun. Also, jumping and L-trigger swinging the hammer down on a guy's head is really satisfying.

The only thing this game is missing is a Mad Stan skin and a button that makes your character yell "BLOW IT ALL UP!"
This is pretty fun, I just would have liked that demo to play a little longer.
Multiplayer demo now up. Xbox owners can queue it up here- http://marketplace.xbox.com/games/me...5-d8025451080d
post #24 of 209
Downloading the PSN demo now.
Thanks for the update. What percentage is it at?
I'm installing it now.
Holllly $%#@. This game is $%#!ing awesome! It's kind of GTA on Mars... You start off with this Thor hammer and you can break ANYTHING into chunks. When you hit someone you send them flying and they make dents in whatever they hit.

Once you get used to that they send you into a giant robot that can break entire buildings apart like nothing. This game is GTA on Mars meets playing godzilla as a kid and knocking down an entire city of blocks.
Yeah, the MP demo is far improved from the MP beta last year. Better weapons, better destruction...

You guys are going to hate playing with me in MP, because every time I get a kill with the Rhino I'm either going to be yelling out "OH YEAH!" or "OH IT'S THE JUGGERNAUT, BITCH!" Which will be a switchup from what I'm yelling when I have the remote charges: "Blow it all up!"
Yeah, so i'll have the PS3 MP demo shortly. Who's up for some carnage?

EDIT: Seems like it's not letting me connect to any kind of online game. Anyone else having problems? Just says no response for 20 different servers. My PS3's not behind a firewall - so is it perhaps just load?
Oh. It's broken.

We wanted to let everyone know that we are aware of an issue surrounding the MP Demo matchmaking on the PS3 version of the demo. We are already looking into it, and will have more information soon.

We appreciate your patience during this time and I'll update this post once there is more information.

Oh Sony, when will you realize that your crummy lack of your own dedicated matchmaking service will hurt almost every heavily MP game on your system?
Me and Nate were playing it on the 360 last night, absolutely amazing. So glad I'm a multi-console owner at times.

It's an amazingly fun game in multiplayer if a little clunky. But the potential for carnage, I dropped a fucking building on someone at some point, and mischief cancels out some of the problems such as lacklustre aim controls and bizarre weapon damage.

Also Hammer frenzies are always fun.

I fully expect to be in the minority on this though
post #33 of 209
playing right now. It's fun, even when you're losing, don't know where anything is, etc. I have real trouble losing track of people in close quarters and get hammered a lot, but still fun.
I'm not sure if they have it online too, but the demo I tried at the NYCC this year had a "pass the controller around" multiplayer portion where you were given a certain amount of weapons and/or explosives and had to cause more destruction than everyone else. Pretty goddamn fun. Definitely picking this one up.
Yeah that take turns mode is called "Wrecking Crew".
Tried it for a few mins today. Wasn't that impressed. Hopefully I can spend a bit more time playing it tomorrow.
So I played for a couple of hours the other night after I posted. Quick observations:

- The backpack system is pretty cool. It plays like a hybrid of Tribes and other class-based games. You can change your role/play style as quickly as you can find a backpack station. The packs all seem useful in different situations too.

-Speaking of Tribes: the Jetpack brought back all kinds of warm fuzzy memories of one of the greatest multiplayer games ever made. Red Faction isn't that good, in fact it's nowhere near, but jetpacking around and lobbing charges at people is the closest to jetpacking around and shooting a spinfuser that any game has come in this generation.

-The Rhino pack is great. Juggernauting through buildings never gets old.

-I HATE that you stop moving when you swing the hammer. I know it's probably a balance issue, but when you combine third-person views with a melée weapon, it makes it harder to judge the distance between you and your foe. I got killed a lot because I thought someone was in range and then swung and missed.

-There's great potential here. I really want to try the other game modes and backpacks that were left out of the demo, so they've at least gotten a rental out of me.

-The destruction is awesome. I want this level of carnage in Bad Company 2, or I'll be bummed.
You're going to be disappointed with BC2.
I know. The announcement trailer for BC2 implied more destructable buildings than part one, but I know Red Faction is a different developer, different engine, proprietary tech, etc.

All that doesn't stop me from wanting similar tech in other games though. I'm sure it'll be better than BC1.

Back to Red Faction. Carry on.
I've nothing more to discuss - as far as i'm aware, the PS3 MP demo's still fucked.

I'm pretty sure Spike's responsible.
Pretty fun game. The reviews on Metacritic are pretty positive, and so far I agree. I only played for about 2 or 3 hours last night, mostly running around and fucking shit up. I destroyed a silo with blast charges, and it came tumbling down on top of me, even though I was a good 20 yards or so away. Not in love with the side mission, but yeah, looks like a solid pick up.

Oh, and it is very satisfying to run up on someone and crack their skull with a sledge hammer.
Is the single player game any good? I'm not on Live at the minute, but I can't resist games that involve blowing lots of shit up
post #43 of 209
I may give this a rent at some point. The demo seems like it'll at least be fun to go crazy and smash the crap out of stuff if you get frustrated with the game.

I'm torn between this and Prototype. It seems like both will offer radically different kinds of sandbox fun.

I haven't touched multi yet, and the single player has been plenty of fun. There's a couple times I wish it had just a tad more polish, like the cover system and vehicle control, but it's negligible. The game is about making big boom boom and it does that extremely well. The big firefights are intense, and offer a million ways to go about them.
Protip for single player: get your morale up quickly. You'll thank me when you get caught up in a huge EDF firefight and the words 'Guerrilla Reinforcements' appears of your screen.
I'm very keen to get into this. Damn you for not being out here yet.

EDIT: Oh groovy, it's on my LoveFilm list now. Should have it soon hopefully.
I'm liking this so far. You can blow shit up real good. I'm actually enjoying it much more than the demo.
