Red Faction: Guerrilla - Page 2

Man, between this, Infamous, and Prototype, I need like $200 fast. Time to knock over a liquor store.

Now that is is out, everywhere. How are ya finding it?

I just took down my 1st high priority target in Parker, sent a smokestack tumbling down smashing right through the EDF barracks building (at leas I think it was a barracks). This game is a destrucogasim.

Did not appreciate the demo. Had no idea of what to do or how to accomplish anything. Looked great, but I wish there had been a little bit of hand-holding to get the gist of things.

I understand your frustration, Jacob. It took me a few playthroughs to get the hang of things before I really started to enjoy the demo.

I picked it up today after trading in some games and I am having a blast just fucking with The Man. I'm only like two missions in, but I've been doing all the side missions and destroying everything I can to build up Morale. Dropping a house on a bunch of soldiers is amazing.
Ha, there's a mission where you have to take out a few high ranking executives meeting up in a tower. You could go for shooting rockets at it, but it's a pretty tough tower and since it's heavily guarded, the baddies will come for you. You could try shooting your way in and making your way up the tower to deliver them some sledgehammer to the face. Which is what you were probably intended to do. However, I used the nano rifle to snipe a few key support beams holding up the top of the tower. In about a minute, the top came crashing down, crushing all those fuckers, and no security on my ass.

Woooot. I really like how destruction can let you think your way out of situations completely differently than other games. In a building that's about to be swarmed by an army of bad guys? Some of them already on the lower floor? Well bust a hole in the wall and jump out to get a vehicle. A base seem too well defended? Sneak to a quieter part of the base and make a doorway/escape route.

Does anyone notice in the Red Faction series that Ultor has the same name and logo as the Ultor from Saint's Row 1 + 2?
Yeah, I noticed the Ultor logo. Nice reference for all the saints row fans out there. I think I'll come back to this game in a couple of months when my craving for crazy structural damage over takes me.
Actually, Ultor have been the bad guys since the first Red Faction. My cousin and I always wondered if Saint's Row and Red Faction took place in the same universe.
So is this really Mercenaries 2 on Mars? Because if so, I'm buying it as soon as I finish Bioshock.

No, it isn't Mercenaries 2 on Mars.

It's BETTER.

It's Mercenaries 2 + location-specific building damage + allies who actually do save your sorry ass on multiple occasions + the fucking SUPER SLEDGE.

If you haven't yet tried the demos, do so NOW.

Well, that shows how much I remember from Red faction 1. Never played 2.
Can't see the retards in the Saints Row universe colonizing mars...

I found an Old Coot who lives in a shack out by the Mole Hole in the badlands, rambles on about all the bullshit he had to do, how the current Red Faction didn't have it nearly as bad as he did.

I think it's Parker from the first game.
Oh my god, the cheats make this game go from great to hilarious. The Super Sledgehammer cheat is majestic.

Also, infinite ammo + proximity mines + top floor of a building = great times.
I want this. Now. Fuck you all.

Also, what formats are people on? I need to know who I can destroy.
I was returning a movie and saw that Blockbuster had one copy for 360 still in stock so I just rented it. I'm hoping to have more time to play once I finish my finals this weekend.

ETA: Ok, I played it a bit and I just quickly want to say one thing ... there are guys with jackhammers sitting by these giant 'ore deposits' that are toiling away hours each day trying to 'mine' these things. My guy walks up with a hammer and smashes the thing with a single hit. I think these other miners need to upgrade to better equipment if a guy with a hammer can do a more efficient job than them.
Man, I don't know how long the euphoria will last, but running through a building, swinging AwesomeHammer and just watching shit fly and the building collapse...well, it's really fucking cool. Also, driving right through a building, Police Story style and leaving this great big car shaped hole on the side with it still standing! only to come back, powerslide a support and have it fall on top of the car...well, it's really fucking cool.

Just wait till you come across a high opportunity target Memorial Bridge in Badlands, and make it tumble.

I love this game, and i've only been on the single player.

Super Sledgehammer + Super Sprint + Super Jetpack = Knocking gunships out of the air. It's also fun to just park a car next to a building and swat it through with the super hammer.
I rented this over the weekend. Sure is a lot of fun, and I like the similarities to Mercs 2. I'll make it a purchase when I get some cash. I've only liberated Parker so far and a few other side missions.
I'm already calling this the most underrated game of the year. I don't think anybody else is playing it, which is a shame. It's like a more badass Mercenaries 2. The only thing holding it back is the bland Mars exteriors.
I'm not playing it because it's not been sent to me yet. I will be online to destroy you all shortly, fear not.

I'm gonna give the demo another spin this weekend and give myself more time to learn the gameplay mechanics properly. I keep reading such great things about this game.
Same here. Gonna have to give this one another crack. Prototype has awakened my need for destructive video game carnage.
My biggest gripe here isn't about the game so much as my weak skills. Everytime you die you don't jump right back in, you have to wait for the reload time and then go. It is really only a gripe because I die a lot. I'm pretty weak.
I die a fair amount as well. It's disappointing that they penalize your morale level each time you die. Once you get a high morale though, the 'morale bonus' scrap you get really makes it worth it.

I'll admit that I was confused at first about how the save system works (and that the main screen defaults to starting a new game instead of continuing one). The save system of the game feels a bit convoluted. It's also hilarious how it'll look like a completely different area of Mars (different sand/sky/etc.) over what must be a mile or so in in-game terrain.

Anyone who's completed the game, I just got the nano-forge rifle, any great upcoming upgrades to look forward to?
Use the vehicles a lot and then leave and return. As long as you don't die, the buildings don't regenerate. You shouldn't really get killed that much unless you get bogged down.
Man, unless I'm missing something, I'm pretty damn lousy at gathering salvage. I know destruction is the name of the game, but are you supposed to destroy every single building beyond the EDF targets and red-indicated buildings? It seems like it's taking forever to save up for that damn grenade launcher.
I found that you get better salvage from doing the demolitions and car transport guerrilla actions than you do from straight up just demolishing EDF buildings. Plus, if you beat the 'pro' times on either of those, you'll get double the scrap (if you've already beat them at regular speed and beat them in Pro after that you'll get the scrap reward a second time). I'd also suggest looking for the ore deposits, if you buy the upgrade you'll get 12 scrap for each one you destroy.

Also, if you raise the morale of the town up a lot before doing the Red Faction missions, you'll get a lot more bonus scrap for completing them. I've also made it through much of the game (trying to finish freeing Eos now) without using the arc welder, grinder, or proximity mines. I find myself using rocket launcher, shotgun (peacekeeper or the marauder one) and remote charges for a while. At this point it's rocket launcher, nano forge and thermobaric rockets or remote charges.

I don't really love the game but since I made it to Eos, I've been finding myself enjoying it a lot more. If you were in a slightly denser city, the destruction would be amazing ... as it is, things are just a bit too spartan. Still, it's a great rental and would recommend it in that regard.
Just finally finished the single-player portion of the game and besides the fact that the final mission seemed about 10 times harder than any other missions in the game, it was generally enjoyable.

It's nice that they re-open all the missions after you've completed it so you can finish them up. I probably won't bother though, so many of them are tedious.

I'm tempted to play a bit online but at this point I'm just as happy to quit playing. I did try to play through a couple of the Wrecking Crew modes and I couldn't deal with the fact that they take away the sprint functionality in that mode. Too frustrating.

Ah well, it could have benefited from more densely placed buildings and a larger variety of weapons but was fun enough.
Just picked this up today so if any of you guys wanna try some multiplayer I'm definitely up for it.
Just spent an hour messing around in the first area. It's essentially Total Recall the videogame but it's fucking awesome. The physics engine is incredible, I was busy destroying a smoke stack when a bunch of EDF distracted me, I promptly dealt with the fascists and was about to continue wrecking the smoke stack when I hard it creaking and then saw cracks appear from where I'd done damage before it toppled over. Essentially it seems to have rudimentary building stress which is really fucking impresses, if you do enough damage gravity will finish the job.
It's like Mercs 2 all over again. I'm insanely keen to get my hands on this, despite LoveFilm saying otherwise.
The destruction in this game makes Mercs 2's binary explosions look ridiculous. Although I did fail a hostage mission by ploughing into the side of a building and destroying the only stairway onto the second floor, where the hostages were held, then I recreated the 1993 WTC Terrorist attack.
Yeah, it was pretty fun just driving through the buildings back and forth until the fucking thing fell down.
I just drove a mack truck into a chemical plant, got out, planted explosives everywhere and set them all off and let the exploding gas tank do its stuff! Whee!

FINALLY!

It arrived. I have destroyed everything.

It's good. It feels good.

But god damn the mission structure is awful. I hate repetition on an assassin's creed scale - this was probably just as bad. I found myself only chasing "destroy building" missions simply because they're the most fun.

A couple of rather amusing on-rails missions but aside from that it's just a wonderful engine on top of a very empty, shallow game.

Buggerit. Back to Prototype!
Basically the missions I completed were the driving ones, the demolitions ones, and the 'help the guerrillas complete their mission' ones because I could just drive them there and blow up the building myself. Even though the instructions say to kill all the enemies and let your guerrilla friends destroy the building I'd ignore that and just destroy the building myself. You still get credit for completing the mission and it is much more satisfying.
I don't know, I never found the guerilla tasks to be particularly repetitive because each could be handled in different ways. Hostage missions were more about judicious use of the nanite gun and the hammer to create openings/exits, heavy metal was just carnage and the Assaults were always bring the building down. The main missions are nice and varied enough and seem to play to the core strengths of the game.

Then again I get the feeling that if you played this game 'efficentley' you'd sap the fun out of it. I remember an interview with the director of Deux Ex 2 where he went on about how the game offered multiple ways to progress, with the most efficent being crawling around in vents, and then watched in horror as people did nothing but crawl in vents and complain about it.
I have been having a ton of fun with Red Faction for the last couple weeks. I never got bored with any of the missions because it's always a blast (literally!) to go in and cause a bunch of mayhem by knocking down buildings. I just recently finished the single-player campaign, and I've played a few online matches and really enjoyed it (despite missing the ability to sprint).
I actually ragequit a single player game of RF:G last night. After smacking my skull against the last Mount Vogel mission for what felt like hours, I made it to the peak, killed the general, and was about to complete my mission objectives when I noticed that I needed a re-arm from one of the ammo crates if i was going to deal with a couple of flyers.

Problem was, the resupply crate had been knocked over during the tank battle, so no matter where I stood I didn't get the "Press Y" prompt to open the weapon menu. Being the intelligent person that I am, I figgered that like a flipped vehicle, it just needed a melee attack or two to be upright and functional again.

BOOM. You have died. Lesson learned: Don't mistreat crates filled with high explosives.

I just didn't have it in me to drag my ass through the entire EDF up that mountain again. I went to bed defeated.

On a sidenote, once you get the nano-forge, don't use it to destroy any MOAB-enabled vehicles you park in front of enemy structures. The forge just disintegrates the MOAB along with the vehicle. Very anti-climactic when you're expecting an earth-shattering kaboom.
Picked up a second hand copy recently and I'm loving the shit out of it, I'm having more fun with this than Mercs 2 and Saints Row 2.

I'd spent the first few days destroying buildings by carefully planting C4 on support structures and smashing selected beams with my sledgehammer when I realised I could just drive a big, fuck-off truck right through the middle of the building. Such fun.

The destuction physics make the game really unpredictable and exciting. For example, I was trying to destroy the big guard towers outside Dust Town Hall. I rigged a ton of C4 on the tower legs and was backing away when around 4 jeeps of EDF troops turned up outside the gate. I blew the bombs and got ready for a shootout when the tower fell right on top of the convoy, killing most of them. I wish this had an in-game recording facility.
I haven't even tried the campaign/single player yet. I should get to that.
Yeah, it's great ... they have a sprint button in that mode.
Volition just became one of my favorite developers.
I think this is my favourite game of the year thus far. The single player is a lot of fun, if a little unfocused at times, and is essentially a massive playground for your ever expanding armoury. But the multiplayer is something else me, Eric and Nate have been playing for about a fortnight now and some of the battles we've had online have been epic. The community is downright terrible, but there's something about having fights in buildings as they roll down mountains, or smashing a smokestack into an enemy's base, or melting the cover some dweeb's being camping behind which completely transcends the douchery.

The soundtrack is also fantastic, definitely inspired by Total Recall at times but there's a real propulsive Hans Zimmer sound to it at times too.
The moog-y synthesizer pointer to Goldsmith's Recall score is really cool.

Anybody playing this on the PS3?
I've been playing this on the PS3 for a while, but I haven't taken it online yet. I'm having enough troubles with the difficulty spike in the third sector (Badlands? Wasteland?) that I'd be good for nothin' against human adversaries.

By the way, when do you come across the singularity grenades as an upgradable weapon? I already have the damn Nanoforge and the option to upgrade the amount of singularity grenades, but have never been able to toss one of the bastards.
The first time I found a singularity grenade was in Eos sector. It was just inside some random EDF building. The demolition training area on it isn't really until after you've freed all the territories before the Free-Fire Zone so I'd think they're probably only in Eos. The bombs themselves are actually pretty annoying because you can't store them in your Red Faction locker so you have to carry them around with you full time. I think I only ended up using them once, in game.

I'd also say that spending a bunch of money upgrading the number of remote charges you can place at once is generally a waste. Once you can place 5-6, that's really all you'll ever need. In fact, the weapons I generally ever used were the nanoforge, rocket launcher, remote charges, and occasionally the shotgun (and obviously the hammer).

I'd also like to say that the fact that there are some 'indestructible objects' in the game (like the large bridge foundations in the Badlands) is still frustrating. I hope that if they make another Red Faction that it has more destructible stuff.
The Singularity bombs are limited and dotted around, I've found three caches in the Badlands, but generally the destruction they cause isn't all that compared to good old remote charges. Cool effect with the vortex though. The Nano Forge is one of my all time favourite gaming weapons though.

There's just something MAGICAL about a gun that turns people, cars and buildings into liquid shit at a distance.
