Mega Man 9

Thread Starter
The new issue of Nintendo Power reveals Mega Man 9 coming to WiiWare in all its 8-bit, throwback, materializing-platform glory. It looks exactly like NES-era Mega Man.

The robots:

Magma Man
Galaxy Man
Jewel Man
Concrete Man
Hornet Man
Plug Man
Tornado Man
Splash Woman (in accordance with the Android Gender Fairness Act of 200X)

On one hand, this is a nostalgic cash-in for a series that has been to the well sixteen times too many. On the other hand, I am downloading this day one.
Can Plug Man ever be as cool as he sounds??
Is Plug Man's weapon the secret to quickly finishing off Splash Woman?
Nintendo Power still exists? Jesus I'm old.

Yeah, that's crazy. I remember getting the FIRST issue ever when I got my NES at a young age. Seriously, though, I don't know why I ever took that magazine seriously. Expecting unbiased reviews of video games for a system manufactured by the company that puts out the magazine? Eh, youth.
I'm beyond excited for this - I've been waiting for Capcom to revisit the classic MM series since, well, forever.

Day One purchase indeed.
Nintendo Power, man, I even remember this cover;

That was pretty much the coolest cover in the history of mankind when I was a lad.
That was the first issue of Nintendo Power I got. I probably still have it around somewhere.
I have a ton of old issues still in a closet in my parents' house. I know I've still got that first SMB2 issue.

Having said that... 8-bit MegaMan? I wish I had a Wii.
Yes, I am very excited about this, too. Awesome list of foes, there.

I still have the early Nintendo Powers in a drawer, too. That cover did rule.
I remember this one too;

Man, amazing that they're still making sequels to these games ...

Yeah, but how many of you belonged to the pre-Nintendo Power Nintendo Fun Club, huh?

When Doc Louis told me to do something, I fucking listened.
I distinctly remember receiving the very last issue of Nintendo Fun Club in the mail. I think it was about The Adventure of Link.
Yeah, I was in on the Fun Club. I remember taking a survey about whether or not I'd be willing to pay a bit more for a larger magazine about Nintendo games. I responded with an enthusiastic yes, and thus, Nintendo Power was created with my blessing.
In other news, someone needs to make tshirts with each of the MegaMan foes on them, in appropriate colors.

Check this one out:
So they got the visual style right, but the biggest question mark for me is still the music - If it in any way can approach the genius of MM2/MM3's soundtracks, I'll be a happy camper.
Looks like you might be happy- a lot of it is apparently straight from MM2.

If this does well, maybe we will see releases of more games in their classic mode. Its way cheaper 9and easier0 to make a game like this than go new generation. So if this takes off, maybe we can actually get a game like Castlevania in its old school style.
Yeah, but, in that scenario, Castlevania does NOT need to go back to its 8-bit roots. Something along the lines of Castlevania IV, but with, say, Contra Shattered Soldier's graphics is more than enough.

But back on topic: my sentiments exactly Alex. Although, I know where Inafune's coming from. I ended up with a group of kids when I went to see Wall*E, and, when I brought up Mega Man, the first thing that came to their minds was the exceedingly shitty series of Game Boy RPGs, and sadly, that's the first place my mind went as well. As repetitive as the games were getting in their side scroller tradition, I'm hoping all we really needed was some time away from the established formula to keep it interesting.

Plus, you know, it'd 2D. That gameplay style should never fucking die.

It felt like an awakening of souls to read that Plug Man was being unleashed—the realization of my adolescent fantasies, I don't doubt. Now I find myself torn, peeled back like a delicious orange. Games Radar is reporting that ole Plug Man is "home to the required disappearing block puzzle". Fist shake.

Oh, Plug Man. Your torrent of chortled annoyance approaches.
I want to play this very badly.
I played Mega Man 2 first, and really loved it. Perhaps I'm the only one, but I proceeded to dislike every other Mega Man game I played from that point on. I gave up after two or three more iterations. If they couldn't get the sequels right back when they were originally making them, why should we expect them to improve on the formula now?

Nintendo Power ... how many horrible games did they give favorable reviews to? It was one of my first lessons in the importance of evaluating information based on the source you're obtaining it from. I remember scrambling around Final Fantasy desperately trying to get the answers to their contest that you let take a trip to the Caribbean.
There's a bit of video out from this. It looks exactly like the oldies, and is reportedly very hard.

Also, Overlord, MM1 DID suck compared to the later ones.

Also also, I remember that FF contest, too. I was most excited by the fact that they were giving away actual weapons and stuff. Like, a sword and a wizard's staff, right?
I just remember Nintendo Power would have the habit of profiling games that either never showed up or came out very late. Let me tell ya, as a kid who would run into the local Blockbuster or 20/20 video and not find the game profiled. It would be very disappointing.

Appropriately for this thread, I spent the better part of summer 1989 harassing Toys R Us with phone calls asking if Mega Man 2 was out yet.

I'm so sorry, Bay Shore Long Island TRU cashiers from 1989!

Yup. And they shipped you to an island where you got to enact an actual role playing adventure. It looked so cool.

I'm shocked no one has suggested adapting Mega Man to a Metroid style 3-D engine.
Just about every attempt to bring Mega Man away from 2d platforming has been a miserable failurepile. Your idea might've been great back in 1991. Now, not so much.
I loved one and two, but even at age twelve I remember saying "Gemini Man? Go fuck yourself, Capcom."
I'll get this just because Capcom fucked up the GC/Xbox Mega Man Collection so bad. The run and shoot buttons were reversed, as I recall.

And Mega Man 1 was pretty awesome, just hard as fuck. Too bad the NES Mega Man games peaked with 2.
Trailer, and good news for 360/PS3 owners.

Best trailer ever!

Nice to see Rush the dog back.
No one has commented on how absurdly awesome the box art for this is?

He's got a gun and a hand cannon? Talk about overkill.

Well, not technically box art, of course. Capcom had the intentionally awful art commissioned for a t-shirt. Because Capcom is awesome.

Also awesome: The Fruit Fucker in the lower right.
I don't see him raping fruit nor making the women drink his juice. Doesn't qualify as fruit fucker.
Saw a few Capcom people wearing it at E3. Great stuff... we talked about it a bit in the E3 thread.

Game kicked my ass as I tried to remember how to play the old-school games. Capcom rep put it perfectly- "It's like riding a bike- it's just an incredibly difficult bike."

Wow. That's all kind of cool. Capcom is turning into my favorite developer lately. I want more of it's classics rearmed!
My Wii will be getting much love because of this. And that box is amazing.
I covet. Too bad I don't own any of those systems.

Is there a handy portal to another dimension where this is released on the DS?
The price tag is a nice touch.

I just blazed through Mega Man 2 last night for a second time(since I downloaded it, anyway). How does the difficulty compare, Alex? More in tune with Mega Man 1?
Are they putting it out on PC as well, Alex? They did it for Bionic Commando so why not this?
Can't wait for this tomorrow - I'm hoping the DLC with Proto Man lives up to my most nerdy childhood dreams.

Twenty minutes and one half of one stage later, I already want to punch this game in the face. Welcome back Mega Man!
Seriously. This game is glorious, and I can't wait to hop back into it.

I made it 3/4 of the way through Wily's Castle last night, and there's some downright devious stuff to manage in the later levels - But anyone who enjoys the series will adore every second of it.

Also, this game's soundtrack rules beyond words - After playing most of the night, I've got 5 or so of the themes on a constant loop in my head.
This game doesn't use a throwback saving system does it?
Thread Starter
Ha, no, it uses save files, no password system. I assume it saves stages upon completion, I'll let you know as soon as I actually finish one.
Haha, the old code-based save system would be great. I'm definitely picking this up off PSN today.
What time does the psn store update. I want to be playing this.
