Mega Man 9 - Page 2

Mid to late afternoon usually. It varies a lot so sometimes it can end up being later in the evening.

Yup, I played the bejeezus out of MM, MM2, and even MM3 back in the day. I think I bought 4, but they sort of circled the bowl at that point. 2 was my fave, and I downloaded 2 and 9 last night.

Tried 2 first and breezed through Air Man's level. Then tried 9, and got buttraped by some robotic elephant and it's ball. Just straight up crushed. And that was after dying several times on the first section of that first level I attempted.

Looking forward to more.

Downloaded the demo and man, this game is brutal. And I wish it were wide screen.

Having only played Mega Man X in the past 10 years, the return to the old-style version has been a bit of a shock. Seriously, those freaking elephants in the demo pissed me the crap off. And yet I just want to go back and play it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Bionic Commando Rearmed take on Mega Man either though. That would have been more interesting I think than the pure 8-bit version (although clearly the 8-bit version is much cheaper to make).

I think this is the single most frustrating game I have ever played. I truly suck having only beat one boss.
I played through a few stages, and it was enough to remind me that I didn't *truly* start enjoying video games as much as I do until the past few console generations, when they generally stopped being so ass-rapingly difficult. I just don't get the same sense of gratification that most others do after beating a particularly tough level or boss -- I'm just left frustrated knowing that there's plenty more to follow. It's very well made, though, and I can easily see where all of the love is coming from.

I stopped being a pussy and buckled down and now have defeated 3 Robot Masters. Plug Man is next on my list!!!!
Out right now on the Xbox!
Sums it up pretty well, I'd say.

I'm still stunned this game actually exists.

By the way, when someone who can breeze through every Mega Man game in less than 2 hours says this game is fucking HARD, believe it.
hard?? i dunno, i just finished the galaxy man stage in like 10 min with like 1 loss of life

we'll see on these later levels

badass game though
The rocket dog comes in very handy on a couple of stages. I would not have been able to complete them otherwise.
Still no PC port? Damn.
It gets easier once you settle into a groove. Hornet Man's stage, and that asshole dancing flower room can still fuck off, though.

I'm on Wily Stage 1. There's a room that's bringing up my PTSD from the beams on Quick Man's stage something fierce.
The thing that really pissed me off was that even if I got hit by something from the back, I'd still fall backwards. So when I'd be jumping over pits and something shot me or hit me from the back, I'd fall completely 180 degrees from which I should have and end up in that effing hole again. That just doesn't make sense and really made me want to throw a controller or two.

4 bosses down, 4 to go. What a ballbreaker, though it's spectacular fun.

In short, play each stage. Over and over. Eventually I can be almost perfect until the initial Really Hard Section (typically involving instant death by pit or spike). Get through that to mid-save with hopefully a extra Man or two (and an energy tank or two). Screw that up. Repeat getting to mid-save again. Finally make it to Robot Master. Use appropriate weapon and E-Tank (as required). Win, breathe sigh of relief, then dread Dr. Wily's instantiation of the Really Hard Section from this stage (recaptured and made more fiendish in his own) and move on.

Currently at Plug Man, but should beat his ass tonight, and hopefully another Master or two as well. Well worth the $10 to play this.

Heh, yes. Galaxy Man's stage is the easiest, by far. But like Justin said, once you overcome that initial balls-hard inertia, it gets a little more manageable.

That having been said, Hornet Man stage can go fuck itself right in the ear.
Yeah. That dancing flower room is an exercise in having nerves of steel and patience to match.
I must say, though: there's something hilariously awesome about killing the shit out of everything that moves by shooting bees at them.

So, in case you guys didn't know, there's new DLC out today.

Quote:
Proto Man Mode - 200 Points

Play the game as Proto Man. You can use the shield while jumping. Some of Proto Man's abilities may differ from Mega Man's, such as having the ability to slide and charge your Buster. However, damage and horizontal recoil are doubled, and you cannot collect bolts. There is no story for Proto Man. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges.

Endless Attack -300 Points

Test your skills on a stage without end. Try to break the record for getting the farthest. Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges.

Special Stage - 100 Points

Gives you another Time Attack stage to try, including a new boss at the end! Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges.

Hero Mode - 100 Points

Play the game with a more difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges.

Superhero Mode - 100 Points

Play the game with a super difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges.
It's coming out for Xbox and PS3 soon. Lot of stuff that's just for the hardcore, but why wasn't this just included with the game? Pretty damn lame, if you ask me.

That's how I feel about all DLC that's complete before the game "ships". It's just stupid greed. If it's new maps and modes that come out months later to breathe new life into a game, great, but this is indeed lame.

Proto Man and the special stage are the only ones of interest to me. Maybe I'll just wait for more old Mega Mans on the VC instead.

Or you could just snatch up Mega Man Anniversary for Gamecube for $70 less than you'd spend on each of the older games separately.

So, all this is contingent on how much it costs on Live, but here's my question: What's the point of the in-game challenges, exactly? I'm rather annoyed that a lot of those weren't the actual XBL achievements. There better be something awesome waiting for 100 percenting that list.

Your point is a good one, but... The jump and fire buttons in that collection were reversed for some reason, basically rendering the games unplayable for me.

I only plan on getting 1 or 2 more, and I'll be set anyway, so it's not too big an investment. I may spring for 9 as well, I'm still undecided.

Don't forget it's also out for the Wii, which doesn't have achievements. Consider them extra achiemevents that don't add to your virtual penis score.
I'd be okay with that if the actual achievements werent so mind-bogglingly ridiculous.
True. Getting 5 points for completing the game feels like more of a slap in the face.
It has such a steep learning curve, but once you make it past the initial slope, you can bang out 3 or 4 levels without dying. I'm hoping the challenges are the same way. But on the other hand, they could be like the Contra 4 challenges which are a series of kicks to your childrens' balls.
It gets easier with time and repetition. Only hurdle for me now is what I assume is the next to last Wily Stage, and a bit involving a lot of bouncy balls/bombs. Problem is, turn off the system, you start the Wily Castle all over again, even if you save. First time that happened, I screamed like I found a horse's head under my blanket.
Repetition is key. After playing the stages over and over, I can make it to Wily-4 probably losing a life or two simply because I lost focus during a platforming segment. The bosses get easier once you know what they do and what you need to do. So does the platforming. It's an unforgiving game, but once you know what to do and how to do it, you can consistently find success.

I loved the additions to the 8 bit gameplay - Tornado Man's circling platforms, anti-grav (Wily's), Black Hole Bomb, etc. Very fun and creative. I am all about a MM10 in this style, if they so choose.
heh i'm finally on wilys castle.

this is...penny arcade summed it up. i feel like a kid again
i haven't felt the urge to throw my controller at the wall like this in at least a decade

That anti-gravity rooms are a thing of genius just as much as they're a boot to the ass. There's brilliant stage design decisions like that all over this game.

Just wanted it noted for posterity that I finally beat this freakin' thing. I hope everyone's suitably impressed, even though you all beat it two weeks ago.
