Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Watched both cuts (finally, somebody was nice enough to include theatrical and uncut versions on a single DVD release. Thank you!) and wondered why there's so little talk about it here. Sure, there's quite a few jokes that don't work at all like Jonah Hill stuff and it drags a bit just before the climax, but otherwise it's a very funny movie. The music's wonderful and silly in the right ways. John C. Reilley is great and I don't agree that he's doing Farrell here mostly because he brings this childish, naive sweetness to his character. And while there's a lot of parody and light satire elements, movie has a surprising amount of good humor (with great comic timing) that works on its own.

I loved the movie. I only got to see the extended edition and yeah, it dragged.
But the funny moments worked and overpowered the bad.

"That's one of the worst cases of getting cut in half i've seen in a while" killed me.

Walk Hard has, without a doubt, the finest Beatles moment in the history of cinema.

"I'm sick of you being so dark when I'm so impish and whimsical."

I wish John Lennon had actually sounded like Paul Rudd's impression.

I thought it was hilarious. Nathan Rabin just did a really good write up about it on the AV Club's My Year of Flops. Check it out, but anyone who hasn't see it yet should beware of spoilers.

Theatrical version is better paced, but I'm glad I watched the longer cut as well, because there're some great moments there and only a little bit of filler.

"Whoops-a-daisey" made me laugh out loud.
The sight alone of Reilly playing a fourteen year old boy next to actual fourteen year old boys guaranteed I would enjoy this.
"I'm cut in half real bad, Dewey." My favorite line.
I really like Tim Meadows in this. The second half feels very bloated, but I still find the movie really funny.
I liked it. I thought that it was pretty funny besides all the negative reviews that it got. It was a crackup that by like 16 he already had 3 kids and a wife.

For you netflix people, they are selling used copies for $10. That's a pretty good price for it.
I thought it was a great send up of musical bios. I liked how they always referred to his age so you can keep track. Not to mention Tim Meadows was great with his "You don't want no part of this shit!..." scenes.

Also what other recent comedy had the audicity to have full frontal male nudity like that? Excluding Sarah Marshall.
That's right, I was able to forget about that. The pecker was swinging right by his head. An out of nowhere scene that cracked me up.
'Let's Duet' destroyed me as did the "You don't wanna none of this shit...." and the Beatles scene.

Other than that the movie was pretty good but I have to confess to having forgotten most of it.

Don't forget about the monkey.

I don't understand how this movie failed to connect with audiences. I loved it and laughed my head off as I watched it alone in a theater. Well, there was one older couple but they walked out during the montage where "Walk Hard" becomes a hit.
The only joke that I think really failed was Dewey tearing the sinks from the wall but everything was was gold.
"All you care about is fruit and touching yourself. Well, fuck you!"
I understand it.
The modern spoof movies play to the dumber masses (You-Tube sensibilities). With this, they only got the obvious WALK THE LINE references. To "get" this movie you may have to have some knowledge of modern musical history or hollywood music bios.
I can imagine a couple of Alabama teens on date night staring at the screen dumbfounded during the many montages. Not getting any of the in-jokes or references, they walk out frustrated and angry.

Oh, disagreed. I laughed louder and harder everytime there was a new sink, even though they telegraphed it so transparently.

I've heard that the extended cut is less funny, but more of a genuine bloated music biopic, and therefore more conceptually effective- truth? That $10 Netflix deal sounds great.
I love this, for my money it's the best comedy of last year.

The Beatles scene gets quoted a lot round these parts.

Justin Long's George Harrison is just fantastic. Funniest thing he's ever done.

EDIT: Jenna Fischer. Enough said.

Yeah, the extended cut is called "The Unbearably Long, Self-Indulgent Director's Cut." Which adds just another layer of funny.

I'll disagree on the sinks too. What doesn't work for me is the dad and Jonah Hill.

Russell, not a huge fan of Knocked Up or Superbad? If so may I ask why and how you have escaped the torrent of shit that would get you?

"With meditation there's no limit to what we can.....*turns to camera* imagine!"
I did enjoy KNOCKED UP and SUPERBAD but just laughed more at WALK HARD. I do hope that doesn't get me tarred and feathered round these here parts.

Agreed. They could just show two hours of her suggestively eating ice cream and I'd be a happy customer.

Won't from me. Just curious.
Cool, I know those two are beloved here on CHUD so I have to tread carefully! Don't wanna end up blacklisted.
Being from Liverpool myself, I gotta say that Jack Black totally kills that Beatles scene. Why is he doing a Pakistani/Welsh accent for Paul Mcartney?

Paul Rudd's is surprisingly good though.
I can't believe this hasn't gotten the "100%, unconditional, if you don't like it it must be because you suck dick while another dick is in your butt" type support that has been wasted on many other comedies of late. It's hilarious on pretty much every level.

"I think I'm doing o.k. for a 15 year-old with a wife and baby." Reilly sells every line he has in this thing.

I could take or leave Hill but Raymond J. Barry was perfect as Dewey's Dad.
Agreed, Molt. I would wager it's the funniest thing Apatow's done on the big screen. I think it's close, but still.

"This is a dark fuckin' period!
It's just one of those movies that seemed to get a "Meh" write-off which, shame on me, is why I never bothered with it until today now that it's running on cable. Very pleasantly surprised.

It really shows that the spoof movie can still be done and done well, even though it seems to be as much a cousin to ANCHORMAN than to the ZAZ stuff. From his Bob Dylan phase to his PCP rage (I'm Zeus!) Reilly was on fire through this whole thing.
I thought the father was pretty good.

Dewey: It's a song about holding hands.

Pa: YOU WATCH YOUR MOUTH.

I also liked how he visited Dewey just to tell him that his music kills people.
"I should have been a better father to you, Dewey. I wish I spent more time playing catch with you and less time training my body and mind to kill you in a machete fight."

This might be my favorite Raymond J. Barry performance. Always appreciated him in YEAR OF THE DRAGON, SUDDEN DEATH, and as Bob Duvall's asshole captain in FALLING DOWN. Didn't know he was gifted comedically.
"I wonder if ya songs'll still be shit when I'm 64!"

"I need more blankets and less blankets at the same time!"

Great and hilarious film, sorely underrated all around. The very last moment in it ("Dewey Cox died three minutes after this performance")[/COLOR] had me laughing throughout the entire ride home from the theater.
It's freaky how much old Dewey looks like current Tim Robbins.
"That was early Dewey. This is middle Dewey."

"You have shaken my faith in the Jewish people."

I've seen this about five times now, and it never gets old. Haven't seen the director's cut, don't really see a need to.

Glad you're on board Molt.
I'm sure whatever I saw wasn't the director's cut so I'm fine with what I got. If I ever see it dirt cheap I might be tempted.

Took me a few scenes before I figured out Harold Ramis was Mr. L’Chai’m.
I just set up the DVR to record this tonight / early tomorrow morning. I will be watching this soon enough and will offer my two cents soon.
I saw this a few weeks ago and thought it was pretty good, it actually had some damn good music even though it was spoofing the entire biopic genre, some of those songs were just so good, the last Dewey ever wrote was pretty damn awesome.

"Look at you, all high and mighty in your diapers, if anything, you need me"

"Dewey, are you alright?" "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot you were there"

Dewey popping some PCP, then running down the street in his underwear while tossing a car and yelling "I AM ZEUS, NO MORTAL CAN TOUCH ME" is fucking hilarious.
Halfway through it now.

Classic line about the King.

"What the fuck was he talking about?"
It's only gonna get better.
Just saw this movie last night. The movie was a dead on satire of the musical bio-pic down to the endless montages. One of my favorite gags was Dewey going "smell blind"....

"We're smoking reefer. Can't you smell it?"

"No. No I cannot smell it"

I also agree the songs were pretty fucking amazing. "Let's Duet" and "Beauitiful Ride" could have been real songs. Amazing.
This movie is totally fucking hilarious and I'm only watching the FX cut. I'm gonna buy this goddamn DVD.
Dead-on parody and funny as hell. I used to be a tour guide in Memphis, so I know Johnny Cash's story back and forth, which made it that much funnier to me. "The wrong son died!"
Easily my favourite Apatow flick. Fuckin' funny from the get go.

Like Spinal Tap, this film rewards multiple viewings.

For some strange, unfathomable reason, I bought the DVD when it was first released, but haven't rewatched it since my theater viewing. Gotta change that ASAP. Very few times I can recall laughing so damn hard in a theater. It was just nonstop, barrel-to-barrel laughs.
"I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS CRAP! All you care about is fruit, and touching yourself! WELL FUCK YOU!!"

God this movie is fucking great.
I love this film. The fact that it bombed has always bugged me. I think it may have a lot to do with the public not seeing or caring for John C. Reilly as a lead, which is crazy, but I can't think of one movie that he has carried that has been successful.

Also, the songs are really well written and very catchy. "A Change is A-Happenin" and "Beautiful Ride" are often played on my ipod.
As in Spinal Tap, the songs are such spot-on parody that they stand on their own. (About 90% of Heavy Metal and Country songs sound like parodies of themselves anyway.) The title song was stuck in my head for days.
