Why does this matter? Seriously, did people ever sit around worrying about transcending the western genre?

Well, Westerns have already reached the point of transcendence, probably around The Searchers. Superhero movies are a new genre that everyone likes, and sitting around bullshitting about trends is pretty much what we do here.

I'm just happy when comic book movies let themselves be comic book movies. I don't see the yearning need for comic book movies to transcend genres.

At the same time, I don't know if most people here actually care whether or not a film like TDK does transcend. I get the impression that people are just curious as to whether or not it will, which I admit is an interesting question to me.

Me, I just want an engaging Batman/Joker storyline. That's all.

Devin, I get that this issue of "fanboys wanting to have their interests legitimized" is a windmill you've chosen to tilt at, and you've got a fair point, but for the most part the people who come here are not those people. Relax cap'n, we're just bored and trying to amuse ourselves.
