Tech question about the PS3

I'm thinking of selling one of my guitars and picking up a PS3 this summer. I was wondering if some of you fine CHUD PS3 owners could help me out with some info.

I have a Toshiba 57HX94 rear-projection hdtv, which has 540p and 1080i resolutions. Virtually all the HD stuff I watch/play is 1080i, and on the 360 the tv upscales 720p games to 1080i and everything looks great.

I remember that the PS3 had some sort of resolution problems when first released, and some games ended up being downscaled to 480p on certain televisions. My question is, would the PS3 give me any problems on a tv that has only 540p and 1080i? Would Blu-Ray disks play properly at 1080i?

Any info you guys might have would be appreciated. I'd be using HDMI to connect the PS3 to the tv.

You have display options to choose from in the system setup menu where you can specifically select 1080i for all output. There is also an upscale menu but I think the only options there may be "on" or "off". Id never heard of the problem you mentioned about downscaling but as far as I know its never been a problem for me.

Sony puts out a patch for the PS3 at least once a month(for better or for worse...its kind of a long process sometimes) so those kinds of problems generally get taken care of once they are found.

You will have no problems with Blu-ray discs, as they all embrace 1080i - and will favour it due to the 1.30 patch.

However, games are another issue. You can force 1080i as the only resolution - but this will alienate literally any 720p-only games. Oddly, some games list 720p as their only mode - but have 1080i in there too.

Basically, you're going to encounter problems until they fix it. That's just them being idiots and not accepting there are TVs out there that don't support full 1080p (most of them)

I've only had a PS3 for a week, but the only game I've had any problems with so far is Motorstorm. Its 720p only and my television only does 480p and 1080i. The game actually runs in standard definition, instead of even 480p which I found extremely dissapointing.

I check the back of the box before buying a game and, after checking on some games at the store, it looks like its mainly the earlier titles that don't support all HD formats. Metal Gear and MLB08 run smooth as butter in 1080i.

About Blu Ray. It will play them and they will look good, but not as good as 720p or 1080p. If you have a Blu Ray vs. DVD demo disc anywhere, or if one came with your PS3 you'll see that there's not a huge difference at all when running on 1080i.

So Blu-ray movies look better in 720p rather than in 1080i? I'm starting to save up for an 1080p hdtv but i got a long way to go looking at the prices I've seen.

Blu-ray movies will look crisper in 1080i, but movement will look better in 720p.

Of course, this all depends on your TV set and what you're watching - Sport is obviously higher movement, player's names in Call of Duty 4 on the heads of characters during gaming looks worse in 1080i than it does on 720p due to it being a fine detail moving around quickly. The refresh rate on your TV is also of importance too.

LCD prices are coming down all the time - never buy the latest generation, always buy the best you can afford - and I wouldn't recommend skimping out on 1080p as a feature. Plenty of cheaper sets offer it, you might just have to go for a 37" option instead of say, 40".

1080i also seems to be ignored by a lot of companies as a supportable resolution.

I say all this, if you're upgrading from a 20" standard definition CRT to an LCD HD - any difference is going to be major for you.
