Hells Yeah WHV! Fuck Original Content!

My once favorite releaser of home entertainment has announced:

Sopranos the Complete Series with extra shit to fuck those who bought the single sets (in this case I didn't)

Deadwood the Complete Series with extra shit to fuck those who bought the single sets (in this case I did)

The Wire the Complete Series with extra shit to fuck those who bought the single sets (i've got the first season, but just borrowing the other sets)

Batman The Complete Animated Series with extra shit fuck those who bought the single sets (Fuck you!)

JFK Ultimate Collectors Edition (what is this? the fourth dip? Okay so its also coming out on Blu-Ray)

Casablanca Ultimate Collectors Edition (what is this? the fourth dip? Okay so its also coming out on Blu-Ray)

I Am Legend Ultimate Collectors Edition (Seriously? Does this movie need to Ultimate Collectors Edition?)

300: Limited Collectors Edition (But not a new blu-ray with the material HD-DVD already has! Though they claim they'll cash-in on that sometime in 2009)

Christmas Story Ultimate Collectors Edition (what is this? the fourth dip? The fucking thing is already on like 12 times in a row once a year. Seriously. Comes with cookie cutters shaped like things from the movie? Come on.)

If only they put half the energy in to new releases that they do into these cash-ins.

Sony pulling it with Seinfeld is probably just as much to blame for these complete series sets with extras.

Thanks to thedigitalbits for the info.

Uh...point is? You didn't expect what?!?

I pretty held off on getting the The Wire DVDs for this reason, hell I've only ever watched the first season, so I'm fucking estactic that the complete series will be available.

With I Am Legend, I would actually like to hear the commentary (as long as Akiva Goldsman isn't doing it with Lawrence, he was fucking annoying on the Constantine commentary). But that should have been on the original release, the fuck faces.

Whoo!

That was a sigh of relief. I'd meant to buy the rest of the Batman cartoon volumes, JFK, and Casablanca. That was a close one.

I'll probably skip the 300 one (I don't see the need to double dip for two documentaries) and the I Am Legend one.

This constant extra-dipping never fails to piss me off, as there are so many films (some old, some foreign, some just obscure) that haven't gotten any DVD release whatsoever and just sit untouched in a box in some distributor's basement ignored. A lot of these unreleased films aren't even that obscure, there's many the IMDB page for a highly-regarded movie that still isn't available on disc.

This is true.

I'm still waiting for my...
Road Warrior DVD with extra shit to fuck those who bought the single disc (way back when DVDs didn't even have menus to speak of, were in snapper cases, and had shitty transfers).

Depending on what they add, I might be just enough of a sucker to throw down for that Batman set.

For this, I am disappointed in myself.

Shit, I need that Sopranos set. I don't know if I'm willing to hock my car for it though.

I have a feeling that any extra material is going to be more kid-oriented like the Justice League sets, but if they do something crazy like commentaries on all of the episodes, it's bought. I'll wait for the specs before I make a decision on Complete Series vs. finally getting Volumes 3 and 4, though.

I have a feeling with Batman the extra material is the book they put with it as shown in the photo at digitalbits. They're too cheap to add any extras to the discs themselves.

Will that SOPRANOS set cost 500 bucks?

I believe SRP on the Sopranos set is $400, so it should be at least a bit less than that.

That's pretty, for sure. But do people really need that much shit with their dvds? Unless the transfer is supremely better, I just don't see rebuying dvds anymore. My Casablanca is pretty loaded already. And it's not like the commentaries on the Sopranos were sooooooo good I needed more.

Although, if Bruce Tim and Paul Dini did commentaries for all the B:TAS eps, I might be convinced to sell my old ones...

A few tv series of which I have every episode on DVD are being re-released in one box. They are adding stuff, yes, but I already have every episode on DVD already? Got it.

You lose the right to complain when you buy it again.
In their defense, if you bought the half seasons of The Sopranos, or indeed any show (like Battlestar), you're fucking retarded. It's bullshit that they would even release half seasons of shit.

Wow, I realize a lot of you guys put a lot of your income towards DVDs and such, but don't you think buying the same damn thing over again is too much?

BTW, there is also a new Godfather set coming out as well.

That I'm more okay with because A. the DVD sets transfer wasn't all hot sauce (it wasn't all that good at all) 2. it'll be on Blu-ray, III. it's two of the greatest movies ever made and D. they haven't tried to re-release them every year.

120 bucks is bullshit though.

You frightened me for a second but then I realized you were talking about Blu-Ray. I'm still about 70 bucks, easily handled.

I totally missed the "Fuck Original Content!" bit when I clicked into this thread, hoping there'd been some sort of announcement about WB doing something with their Golden Harvest library. Nope, just more double dips on shit I wasn't going to buy in the first place.
I got pissed when I first read this, until I saw:

Quote:
HBO is releasing The Wire: The Complete Series as a 23-disc DVD box set, including all the previous extras along with a never-before-seen gag reel.
Well then....a gag reel? Maybe if they added some commentaries, docs, etc. I'd double dip, but a gag reel? C'mon.

Looks like the only one of those I'll be picking up is the Deadwood complete series.

The new LA Confidental SE is going to contain the TV pilot starring Kiefer Sutherland. I really wanna see that:

Hey, at least WHV releases more obscure things then all the other studios combined, and does a damn fine job of restoration. Like I find ironic how the restoration of the original Godfather elements and the rest of the mastering was done at WHV.

Universal for instance is sitting on more grade a unreleased media that I do not even want to think about it because I will break something.

You can preorder it for $275:00 at Amazon. But the extras do not look all that great though.
If you don't have the series, it's not a bad deal, but if you have all the seasons, no way it looks like it's worth a 200 plus upgrade.

That cover's awful, though. They should have made it a mock-up of Hush Hush Magazine.
I saw the Sutherland pilot when it aired on Trio. I think it was okay at best.

And I could care less about the art for this one. My one gripe is that it doesn't seem to have any of the same features on it as the original single disc, and it was the hope that they'd be repeated that kept me from buying the single disc years ago. It was always going to be a first-day buy, but the Sarris commentary and music only tracks -- not to mention the page to screen episode -- elevate it to "now, please."

Now, if you'll join me and everyone else in a rousing chorus of "fucking finally."

I should probably start a thread for Universal, who used to be the worst offender of the needless double dip and appears to be reclaiming their crown by re-releasing titles on a yearly:

National Lampoon's Animal House: 30th Anniversary Edition on 10/28
Not to be confused with the "Double Secret Probabtion Edition" or "Collector's Edition". Seems like it'll have the same exact features but you'll have the option of buying it in a special yearbook case.

And of course they've got the Big Lebowski and John Hughes films quadrillionth dips coming in the next couple month.
