Recommend me some good action/horror

We were talking about Blade II in the action thread, and that film really is a blast. Between Leonor Varela, the colorful cast, and the kickass mano-a-reaper+vampires stuff it's my favorite of Del Toro's. Something I feel won't change even with Hellboy II.

Since I'm not the encyclopedia that most here are I'm in need of some recommendations. Some filmmakers have done great things with a big budget (Predator), and even a low budget (Dog Soldiers) so anything in between or something laughably bad will do just fine. Thanks in advance.

FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, DAWN OF THE DEAD ('04), and PITCH BLACK come to mind. I'll throw in the original HITCHER as well.

JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES works for about the first 30 minutes, beyond that it's just fun to watch James Woods devour the scenery.

THE HIDDEN is more sci-fi/action, but there is some quality creature stuff in there. Fantastic movie.

Most people hate it, but I enjoy END OF DAYS if you're looking for action/horror with a satanic bent.

I've never seen the Hidden, but those are all good films. And yea I enjoyed End of Days as well. Maybe because an Omen/T2 hybrid was the last thing I expected. But Gabriel Byrne and Arhnold each being the men and a half they are was fun to watch too- especially when Byrne is first possessed and grabs the woman's breast right in front of her husband. Only Byrne could pull that look of menace off when the man is about to complain but keeps his mouth shut instead after Gabe's glance.

Anyway, I guess I'm hoping the action/horror genre has its own Antonio Sabato Jr. sub genre or something.

Speaking of B action movie stars, as flawed as the film is Decascos or not, Brotherhood of the Wolf was pretty good too.

I never liked them, (let the flaming begin. . . again) but the latter "Evil Dead" films, particularly "Army of Darkness" are fan favorite horror/action flicks, with a healthy dash of comedy. One could make the argumrnt for "Aliens" as well, unless you consider that Sci fi/action. I'm sure I'll think of more. As will Darkmite "Mister Thorough" 8.

FLAME ON! Yeah, my beloved Splatstick subgenre (EVIL DEAD trilogy!) usually has plenty of action.

I do like the BLADE series, VAMPIRES, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, DOG SOLDIERS, END OF DAYS, THE HIDDEN, PITCH BLACK, DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, FROM DUSK TIL DAWN (even the DTV sequels), as others have mentioned.

EVIL ALIENS, UNDEAD, THE CONVENT, and (acquired tastes) BLOODY MALLORY and ANGEL OF THE NIGHT are fun schlock.

ALIEN and PREDATOR series and their numerous knock-offs from DOOM to DNA offer a varied amount of entertainment.

DEEP RISING, PLANET TERROR, SPLIT SECOND, FULL ECLIPSE, VERSUS...

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, HELLBOY, THE MUMMY, TREMORS, CARNOSAUR, OMEGA MAN, DARK PORTALS (VIDOCQ), and THE GUYVER dabble a bit in action/horror.

Uwe Boll flicks (HOUSE OF THE DEAD, ALONE IN THE DARK, BLOODRAYNE) and Asylum's I AM OMEGA are shit, but are good for a drunken MST3K party session.

The SANTO and TOXIC AVENGER franchises!

The HK Zombie-Vampire genre (MR. VAMPIRE, etc).

Adult Swim's live-action STIFF, the web cartoon and comic XOMBIE, the comic books HACK AND SLASH and SPOOKS, anime like VAMPIRE HUNTER D and BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE (plus others), BUFFY and ANGEL tv series.

COLD AND DARK was forgettable. HORRORS OF WAR was ok, OUTPOST was better.

Sorry, I'm also a guilty UNDERWORLD and RESIDENT EVIL fan... Please don't take away my Corner Club card.

The subpar (AKA cruddy) LEGION OF THE DEAD, SHIRA: THE VAMPIRE SAMURAI, GUARDIAN OF THE REALM, MATTHEW BLACKHEART: MONSTER SMASHER, and RAZOR BLADE SMILE left a lot to be desired, but are worth a completist (sorry, can't help it) mention.

EDIT: Avoid VAMPIRE ASSASSIN and AVIA VAMPIRE HUNTER at all costs! You've been warned.

Anyone see/recommend the cheesy-looking GABRIEL or MAGUS?

Eric Red's stuff has that vibe. He wrote "The Hitcher", "Near Dark" and "Body Parts" and in each one, there's some pretty gnarly car chase action. I didn't much like the action elements in "The Hitcher", but they complement the horror quite well in the other two, and "Body Parts" is especially cool for having a car chase where the cars are side by side because the driver of one car is handcuffed to the passenger in another.

Good CHRIST DM8! You've outdone even yourself. D72 deserves much props too for coming up w/ a few you didn't mention (& none of them lame, either).

Jesus, Darkmite just made everyone else redundant!

But if you haven't seen Neil Marshall's DOOMSDAY, you need to do so immediately. It's a shit-hot mash-up of 28 DAYS LATER, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, ALIENS, ARMY OF DARKNESS and THE ROAD WARRIOR.

Forgot a few:

KIBAKICHI 1 & 2 (Japanese yokai/werewolf samurai)
NIGHTWATCH and DAYWATCH (Russian)
CAPTAIN KRONOS (Hammer Studios)
More Japanese zombies: JUNK and WILD ZERO
SciFi Originals: VAMPIRE WARS (AKA BLOODSUCKERS) and SLAYER
Comic book adaptations: THE CROW, CONSTANTINE, SWAMP-THING (and MAN-THING, not really)
SUPERNATURAL tv series
SPECIAL UNIT 2 tv series (not on DVD dammit!)
BUBBA-HOTEP and the PROPHECY franchise had action/horror elements.

Enter at your own risk= RISE, ULTRAVIOLET, and SKINWALKERS

*Thanks for the assist, Disciple_72, and others!

Is the Slayer property you mention above an adaptation of the Karen Koehler novel by the same name I reviewed & despised so much a few months ago?

Serious reps. Thanks guys.

The Guyver movies were pretty cool when I was a teenager. I actually have the 2nd one on DVD, but never opened it to return to it and see if it was still good (which it most likely isn't).

I would say NO: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0760186/ and SciFi's site.

But Karen K's from our neck of the woods though, according to wikipedia:
She was born in Garfield, New Jersey, The United States of America and as of 2000 lives in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

Digging around the web just now, this trailer looks really up my alley (and very promising): Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer
Creature-corner article from last year.

Can't recommend, as I haven't seen it, but it looks awesome:

THE MACHINE GIRL: Trailer

While seeking revenge for her little brother's murder, Japanese schoolgirl Ami (Minase Yashiro) loses an arm to yakuza villains. Her plight prompts a pair of friendly mechanics to furnish our heroine with a butt-kicking machine-gun prosthesis. As the determined Ami sacrifices more limbs, she receives stronger and deadlier upgrades in this outrageous gore-filled slasher from director Noboru Iguchi.

I wouldn't seek it out or anything, but if a film adaptation of Koehler's novel were to appear on cable some night, I'd give it a look see. The IDEA behind the book was solid, and would translate well into a film, I think. By nature, film adaptations are truncated versions of the books in most cases, and that's what this book desperately needed more than anything else, IMO. For a change, I DON'T want to know what's going on in a character's head, since that dragged the story down like lead weights. And her being from NJ doesn't help her any; Slayer still sucks.

Nice pick. I'm wondering if the upcoming Solomon Kane movie will have a bit of that Kronos vibe, one of the posters I saw for it definitely did.

Probably scraping the barrel a bit now, but a couple more:

Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (Shaw meets Hammer!)

Spooky Encounters

Story of Ricky

The Omega Man

Race with the Devil

The Island (Michael Caine)

Demons

10 to Midnight (Bronson vs Slasher)

Turkey Shoot aka Escape 2000 aka (my personal favourite) Blood Camp Thatcher

The Watchers series

Faust: Love of the Damned

Route 666

Sundown: Vampires in Retreat

That actually came to mind, and I hope so.

Nice additions (I dig call out OMEGA MAN as well, but you named a few specific titles in the HK subgenre, where I was more general). Now where's BobClark to yell at us for just listing everything in the genre?

FAUST was kinda meh IIRC (I'll have to revisit), but I've always been curious about TURKEY SHOOT.

Can't speak for anyone else but everything I've listed satisfies "laughably bad" at the very least, as per the original posters request. Thus: Faust, which doesn't really need more than one visit.

Turkey Shoot is a really fun Most Dangerous Game variant, violent enough (probably the most violent one of all, actually) to be considered kinda sorta same general ballpark as horror. Directed by Brian Trenchard Smith of Firebase Gloria, Dead-End Drive In and Stunt Rock minifame.

He also wrote the worst script for Alien^3.
'Nails-against-chalkboard'-bad.

It's a shame it's not on Region 1 DVD, but Reggie packing this, qualifies PHANTASM 2:

I bought this movie as a blind purchase at best buy. It looked great in the trailer. Trust me, all the best parts are in the trailer. It is no where as interesting as Versus.

It's possible that I missed it, but nobody has mentioned DARKMAN (more superhero/horror/action/blackcomedy than straight horror/action, but awesome none the less).

Rental (instead of purchase) it is then.

Forgot there's also a few horror-westerns out there (if that qualifies as "action"). "Weird West" is the subgenre apparently (and also includes sci-fi-western)? GHOST RIDER qualifies (not as something I'd recommend, but as an entry).

I'll definitely give Daywalker Snipes' flick, GALLOWALKER a shot.

Anybody seen any of these below? I'm a little curious.

Speaking of Weird West...

DEAD NOON

On video in October maybe?

EDIT: Bummer. This link in the above post is dead now: horror-westerns
