The People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996)

Woody Harrelson was rightly nominated for the Best Actor Oscar as he delivers a a magnificent performance, that it's a shame that he hasn't had many lead roles in recent years, although his supporting turns are still great. He never has a dull moment in the film, and all of the courtroom scenes are so outrageous that it's amazing to know that they really happened.

Edward Norton does a great job as Flynt's long suffering attorney, and even Courtney Love does a good job as Althea. There's also Forman mainstay Vincent Schiavelli, Crispin Glover who has this bizarre thing going on with his left eye, and Woody Harrelson's real life brother Brett playing his brother on film.

A damn great movie about the right to Freedom Of Speech.

You said it all. Its a damn good film, especially from an actor perspective and I concur - Woody should get more work.

Every time I hear about this movie I reminded about the Mr. Show bit known as "TAINT"

I would say it is Forman 4th best film, which in no way is a bad thing.

1.Amadeus
2.One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
3.Ragtime
4. The People Vs. Larry Flynt

Having not seen Ragtime, i'll go with third. Amadeus is probably one of my all-time favourite films.

I don't know if it's just me, but there always seems to be the Milos Forman trademark of seeing some guy's bare ass on screen.

One of my favorite movies. How Forman draws sympathy out of a guy like Flynt... pretty remarkable.

I loved it too. I remember I was pretty pissed that it was kind of snubbed when it came out. Norton playing the straight man to Harrelson's insanity was perfect. The only problem was that Love felt terribly outclassed.

Does that matter?

It got James Cagney last preformance, so see it. Brad Dourif, Milos Forman, Michael Hausman, Patrizia von Brandenstein, Howard E. Rollins Jr, and Mandy Patinkin.

Randy Newman's lyrical score and Miroslav Ondricek's understated cinematography earned two of the film's eight Academy Awards nominations

Not to mention Jeff Daniels and Samuel L. Jackson have bit parts.

you know i need to see it again

You'll notice Daniels right away as the cop on the beat telliing the black guy (It's been a long time since I've seen the movie) to either move something or take something down. Jackson is one of the hostage takers in a blink and ya miss it scene.

Blink and you might miss Courtney Love's jugs, too.

In all seriousness, this is a really good movie. I would like to meet the real Larry Flynt.

I saw The People Vs. Larry Flynt when it came out back in 96 and by all rights this should have swept the Oscars as it was the finest film of that year. It's a travesty that Harrelson didn't get best actor for his career best work. And why? Because the movie dealt with pornography. I haven't seen the film in a few years and just finished re-watching it. It still stands as one of the best movies of the 1990's. Is it just me or has Hollywood become more reluctant to make movies like this over the last 15 years or so? We got Larry Flynt in 96 and then Boogie Nights, another movie dealing with pornography, the next year and that was another masterpiece. It just feels like we get less and less movies that deal with adult subject matter and not just in relation to porn.
