Some questions for PS3 owners:

Hello -

First off, I'm not a fanboy of either Microsoft or Sony. They're both fine machines, and software is the most important thing. This isn't meant to be a "which is better" thread.

But - my second 360 recently red-ringed on me. (I know - that's nothing, I've read about people on their third or fourth.) Two things arrived in the mail today - my box to return my 360 for repairs, and my stimulus check from the feds.

I can't help but think that it might be a nice opportunity to get a more reliable machine, and turn in my repaired 360 (whenever I get it) for store credit somewhere. So, some questions for the Sony crowd:

(First off - I don't play console games online, and I don't care about exclusives. All my current favorites, and the games I'm most looking forward to, are available on both machines. My questions are about the hardware.)

1) Is the PS3 more reliable? I'd like to be able to play my games without worrying that my machine is going to freeze up or overheat at any moment. Does Sony have problems like Microsoft does?

2) Is the PS3 quiet? Sometimes my 360 sounded like it was trying to achieve lift off.

3) How much do the games use the controllers wiggle feature, or whatever the hell it's called? I'm an old-school gamer - I like to interact with my games using controllers and buttons, not by waving a magic wand around.

4) Is the PS3 backwards compatible? I turned in my PS2 for a 360 before I got a chance to play God of War 2.

5) It seems that there are many versions available. How much memory do I need, if I just the space for game saves?

ty much for any info or advice

1)It's very reliable.

2)Compared to the 360 it's extreamly quiet.

3)Games generally ignore the Sixaxis on the PS3, and if they use it it's very tiny things like bringing up a map or shaking flame out if you're on fire. Warhawk however is an excellent use of the tech, using the motion of the controller as control over your plane. Very fun.

4)I'm not sure where the backwards is at right now, but I did buy my 60g a few months ago for that exact reason. Mine has the emotion engine, at this point I don't think yours would.

5)Like I said, someone else will have to detail for you the different versions.

Officially the PS3 is more reliable. The figures are low single percentages for the PS3's failure rate - however it's also been out far shorter a period of time to test this - however the failures have mostly been to do with the blu-ray drive. I've recently had a friend had to send his away - however the problems arose after his kids were left with it for the weekend. It's entirely possible they just didn't treat the machine like the expensive item it is.

Saying that, the new batch of 360s are supposed to be very, very reliable.

2. The PS3 is very quiet. Sometimes the fan kicks up a notch - but only notably if your room becomes very warm. It's near-silent at room temperature.

3. The PS3's motion sensor is officially a joke, it works - but is nothing compared to the wii's. Occasionally a first-gen game on it would use the feature, but most developers have assigned it to a "off-by-default" status - and even then it's usually only minigames it'd feature in.

4. The newer generations of PS3 don't appear to feature backwards compatibility. I could be wrong regarding the 80GB model (which isn't available in the UK), although I know that the 40GB in the UK doesn't have it. I wouldn't hold your hopes up even then.

5. The hard drive inside your PS3 is easily upgradable using the same hard drives used in laptops which are easily available cheaply on ebay. Buy what you can afford, you can always upgrade later. The standard model will be adequate for game saves and installs.

I'll answer 4 and 5 since the other questions have been answered.

4. If you want backwards compatibility, you want to buy the 80 GB PS3, since that is the only one currently offering backwards compatibility.

5. There is a 40 GB PS3 and that would be more than enough for just game saves, but you would not have the backwards compatibility of the 80 GB PS3. The 40 GB PS3 is $400 and comes with a sixaxis controller (motion sensing but no rumble) and the 80 GB PS3 is $500 and comes with Metal Gear Solid 4 and a dual shock 3 controller (motion sensing and rumble).

1. I've had a 60 gig model for a little over a year now and I have had problems on occassion with it ejecting regular DVDs every once in a while for the last two months. I have never had a problem ejecting a blu-ray format disc, maybe because they are slightly thicker.

2. I have only had it get really loud once when I accidently hit the remote turning it on without my knowledge, and I still had it enclosed in my entertainment center. It was very quick to quite down however, once I opened up the door to get some air in. No problems during typical use.

Bruce, Bees, and Domingo are right on about everything else.

Had mine for little less than a year, haven't really had any problems with it so far. I've noticed it does get quite hot though. If you want to play it safe just give the machine a break every couple of hours if you're planning on using it all day, and use a dust cover.

I've had overheating problems but I sent it on a Tuesday and received a new one back 7 days later. A thousand times better than 360 in that regard.

Just to chime in here, the PS3 is WAY quieter than my 360. It's night and day between the consoles. Even with a disc in the system it's very quiet. It's probably the thing that most drives me to by PS3 versions of games over 360 ones.
