Friday Night Lights Season 3

First word out of press tour is (spoiler, highlight to read) Smash and Street are being written out and the actors will appear in recurring roles. Makes sense, as both characters had pretty much reached the end of their respective arcs. As much as I want to see Smash play college ball, I think it could easily fall into the same problem as the TMU storyline -- that the characters are such a great ensemble, they work best when playing up against one another. And Street is a good example of when they try to shoehorn in a character who's out of the high school "scene" in season two. I don't think they knew what to do with him.

New season starts in the fall, with the episodes airing on DirectTV's network first and then on NBC a week later.

Yeah, I'd read that yesterday, and wondered if fans in general would want to know it beforehand. I'll be watching, whatever the case. Plenty of good stuff to keep me around.

Continuing with that tangent, the show's in a weird place where they've never really established what grade most of the characters are in. The two that are leaving, plus Saracen (mentioned as a sophomore? freshman? in the first season) are really the only ones with a date set to them -- I can't remember if Lyla was a senior this year (especially since each season seems to be following one Panthers season) and I think Julie was a freshman in the first season. But Riggins and Tyra (as well as Landry, although you could assume he's in Saracen's grade) never had their grades mentioned, plus both are in enough academic trouble that they could be extended for a little longer than is "necessary." (Although as a TWOP writer pointed out, Tyra's redemption is that she'll probably grow up to be Tami, and the question is will Riggins get his act together long enough to grow up to be Eric. And what is the deal with that sentence structure?)

It must've been tough, with only 13 episodes to shoot for - not a lot of time to pack in the story and the football, which everyone seemed to agree was missing this year (victim to the strike). I'm sure Charles and Porter will wind up their stories in a satisfying manner. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised to see Porter wind up on Heroes or something.

More spoilers

Janine Turner looks great, fuck the annoying laugh.

And Kim Dickens - as Saracen's mom? Fantastic.

When do us non-directTV having motherfuckers get to see the episodes?

January for non-Direct TV users. Helloooo tznts.
Great episode, even with the summary. One important point - these are full-hour episodes which will be shortened to 42 min in the Spring on NBC.
If someone knows where to get torrents of this, I will fellate you.

Thanks.

mininova.org has it for you to go get.

Just got done watching the first 2 episodes of the season (thanks oats, and I will break out the kneepads if I see you).

Pretty goddamn good so far. Honestly, not a single complaint. I like the way they are handling the Smash storyline, which gives me great hope for how they write-out Street. This stuff is on-par with Season 1, no doubt about it.
100% agree - even the scoreboard-cash-reappropriation is becoming compelling as the backlash begins.
Great episode this week - really getting back to that season one vibe. Great work by the writers, actors, directors, great job all around.

Can't wait to see more of Kim Dickens.

Loved the Nemo bit.

Episode 4 was another great piece of work by all those involved. This show is very quickly moving up my list of favorite shows ever, in the Top 5 now.

Poor Landry. Poor poor Landry. I've been there before, pal--it fucking sucks.

I'm catching up with the show, and the first episode was pretty outstanding. The scene where Peter Pan's dad talks to Coach sent chills up my spine in a "wow, that guy is evil as fuck" kind of way. The guy knew exactly what to say to appeal to Taylor and get him to consider selling Saracen out. Bringing up Jason Street's name and everything.

I also like how the show only tells us the backstory of the Taylors in how they relate to other people. I think it was on TWOP that said that redemption for Tyra is possible, because Tami represents a better future for her, and the question about Riggins is does he live long enough to become Coach? Still, I really like how just enough has been revealed about these characters' stories before they met each other, and enough has been said that we can fill in the gaps. It's pretty obvious that Coach had a hardcore football father who he had a bad relationship and a career-ending injury early on. The latter's one reason why I think the storyline with Smash has potential to go places, as does the story with the new QB. Both represent a type of redemption for Taylor. But when it comes to the new QB, at what cost?

More as I continue to watch the season. I have to say I'm really digging the fact that the premiere was 50 minutes. I don't know if this was just for the first episode, but I worry it will hurt the show when it goes to NBC.
The opener was longer, but the remaining episodes are standard length.

Drunk posting. Wrong thread.

3.7 was another great episode. Don't really wanna get into too much discussion because I think only a handful of people here are actually watching the show now, with most of you waiting until it comes on NBC in January.

I was leery of how they were gonna handle the Smash & Street exit storylines, but so far they have been very satisfying.
Street's exit was great. I shed some tears and it was great to have Riggins be a part of it all.

Texas Forever indeed.

How much has Kitsch improved over these three seasons? Fantastic work all around. Yeah, a weeper of an episode.

Totally agreed on how much better Kitsch is. He is night and day better than he was in season 1. Hell even the pilot to about episode 5 you could actaully see the guy improve each show.

Street's final scene w/ Riggins watching choked me up as well. Smash had a great sendoff, but this was even better. If this season is FNL's last, it was worth it for the closure on their stories alone.

Or knows how to hunt down torrents of the show a couple hours after they air.

ETA: But I do plan to watch them when they re-air on NBC and I will get the DVDs.
So I just started watching this show because I was an extra in several scenes, including the fall dance and this little bit from episode six:

And here's where I popped up at the dance:

And lo and behold, I went and got myself in the center of the frame.

Episode 9 was pretty damn good, and it was giving off a "we think this is the end of the line for us, so we're gonna start wrapping some things up" vibe.
Sweet, Greg! You have good taste, it's an excellent show. Check out the last 2 seasons.

Yeah, I read Aimee Teagarden got a job with 90210 - no a good sign.

Anyhow, based on the previews for next week, I feel bad for people who hated the murder storyline from last season 'cause SPOILERS I expect to see Coach beat Saracen to death, toss his body off the bridge, leave his State ring behind...

Can't wait for this to come back. It's been far too long. Happy that the writers are dealing with certain characters. Or not dealing with them, in this case.

Last night's episode was fucking huge.
Fucking great. Bring on S4.
Absolutely loved that episode. The season ended the way it should have and the final image...god I loved it.
i thought the season finale was next week?? was there an episode last night??
Next week is the finale, and Wednesday was the second to last (both new).
The last episode of the season is going to be at the end of the school year, unlike in Season's 1 and 2.
The finale was a kicker, but maybe its better to take the talk back to episode 3.1...Hope some folks saw it tonight. Excellent stuff.

Bill Simmons does a long chat with Peter Berg about the show:

This is the best show on TV right now....and I'm someone that worships LOST so much that I would consider blowing Lindelof & Cuse. FNL is the kind of show I would kill to have my name attached to. Even if you haven't watched it before this season, please dear God tune in now---you will love it and enjoy it.

FYI, the Simmons podcast has no spoilers except for the fact that they talk about how the Smash & Street storylines are wrapped up in this season...which has been discussed ad nauseum.
i have seen the first three episodes on direct tv, but decided to stop for NBC broadcasts.

Should we start a new thread?

And, is it true that the NBC eps are edited compared to the direcTV versions?
IIRC the first DirectTV episode ran close to an hour; the following episodes were closer to the standard 43 minutes or so.
They may have to cut a scene or two in most of the episodes.
If that was the series finale (and I don't see FNL killing it in the ratings this year; after all, NBC has to make room for non-stop Leno), that was a great way to end it. If not, there's great dramatic material of watching Coach Taylor trying to build a team from scratch.
Yeah, call me crazy but I actually think CT might enjoy himself there. There won't be the same pressure from boosters, and he can really run his own program. Mac may not want to stay with the Panthers with Wade calling the plays for JD.

Unfortunately, the ratings for the first NBC ep were not good. But what's new?
Thread Starter
The ratings were pretty good during the Direct TV run, though.
Yeah, and during the interview linked above Berg said that FNL did well with Tivo ratings, which are apparently very important. I'm not going to pretend to understand what he was talking about, but if we can get another 13-episode run next year, i'd go for that in a heartbeat.

Its the Jeff Zucker Lobby Theory, fellas. If any of you ever see Jeff Zucker, tell him you love FNL and that you are glad he puts that show on TV.
Friday's episode was FNL least watched episode in its entire run. That's not a good thing. The positive way to look at things is ratings for basically all shows have been dwindling, while these "new" FNL episodes have been available to watch for four months.
The thing is, FNL has ruined other television for me. Other dramas just seem utterly banal and vapid in its wake.

As Matt says, this would be a great year to go out on, if there was a year. But hope springs eternal. People have been calling this show dead since episode one of season one.
