Friday Night Lights Season 3 - Page 2

Just knocked out the last three episodes last night, and damn...

Everyone was just great. Beautiful final shot, indeed. Bravo, Panthers.

Anyone notice the X-MEN comic book on Riggins' nightstand in the penultimate episode just before he knocks over the alarm clock? Heh. It looked like a Lee-era issue with Gambit, but I couldn't see for sure.
Ah! That would be great. Gotta check it out.

There is great writing about FNL all around the place now.

http://www.slate.com/id/2208682/entry/2208681/

Check out Dellamorte's review of the Blu-Ray DVD release of the FNL feature film at Collider - his spot-on comments pretty much apply to the TV series as well.

I'm watching them as they air on NBC, and so I am technically "behind", but I have to ask...Does JD kill himself? It sure feels that way.
He does not.

'Friday Night Lights' may be coming back for two more seasons:

Yeah. Ratings are low, but man, if they could pull this off...Hope everyone who caught NY, NY liked it.

Motherfuck JD McCoy's dad. So evil. His wife's pretty hot, though.

Just finished episode six of the DirecTV episodes. Best drama on TV right now.

I mean, the way the Smash arc is so well handled. Two of the best moments in that story -- Coach after he tells him he's got the walk-on and left the house, and the final, triumphant grin of Smash on the field, yelling "Where you at?" in a way we hadn't seen all season (and really, not since he got suspended last year) -- are done with as few words as possible, just acting and direction. Great.

I have to say that the entire new york tangent with Street and Riggins was beautiful.

the little moment they shared before Street rolled up to Erin's doorstep was one of the best moments of the show.

What a perfect way to say goodbye to Jason. Two thumbs up for how they handled the goodbye to Smash and Street.

Im curious to see how they play out the goodbye for Sarascen. Im really liking his character arc so far this season.

One of the things that the Slate article brought up that I thought interesting was how the show seems like it's neutered a lot of its characters over three seasons. Especially Riggins, who they mentioned was probably a racist in the first season and now is the show's "breakout character" (in so much that a show with ratings like this can have one of those.) I've been thinking about rewatching the first season for a while, so I'm curious to see if that holds up.

I need to watch last night's episode but I'm all caught up before then. The New York episode was pretty great, and the ending to that one and Game of The Week were just additional exhibits in the case of Taylor Kitsch as The Next Big Thing.
I really thought last night's episode was going to end with a gunshot.

Also, Coach should have at least made Saracen clean that fucking grill.

Lastly, I would totally rock a Crusifictorious shirt.
With Riggins, I think of it more as him growing up. Saracen is more of a case of arrested development, someone who's done a stand-up job of caring for his grandmother since he was young, but someone who never really developed the chops to lead that Jason Street did, someone with a tremendous amount of anger inside. But there are some character-defining moments to come, right up thru the last moments of the finale.

I don't think it's carved in stone quite yet...Apparently people were asked Chandler and Leland at the Beyond the Lights charity golf tournament this weekend, and they said they haven't received official word yet. Still, my mind is coming to terms with the concept that we'll get 2 more years of the Lights.

It's Mike Ausillio as the source. He posts a lot of blind items, but they're generally founded and sourced. As much as he annoys me, he's usually right. He'd also posted about this before, back when it was a rumor, so this is him folllowing up on that with semi-official confirmation.

I also think doing 13 episodes a season and splitting the cost with DirecTV of a show that's already somewhat cheap to produce is what makes this a good, smart bet.

Absolutely. Ausiello has been one of the show's biggest supporters, going back to early S1 when people were still bitching about the use of hand-held digital.

It's almost in the bag...almost.
You have to remember this as well, I'm pretty sure Ausiello was the first person who reported the possible NBC/DirectTV merger for the show last year. So he obviously has good sources when it comes to FNL.

While I'm amped at the prospect of more FNL, I am concerned about how things are going to unfold now that the major "student" characters (Lyla in Tennessee, Riggins and Saracen off the team, etc.) are more or less going to be off school premises and away from the team.

Unless Riggins and Saracen get hired as assistants at East Dillon...

With all the FNL talk, let's keep in mind that not everyone has seen the Direct TV episodes.

The last I heard was that the only ones signed for future seasons were the three Taylors and Saracen. You can't have Saracen without Landry. Pretty sure Riggins got mentioned after the fact as well. And there's more than enough drama with J.D. and his dad (although I'm still a few episodes behind) that I think Jeremy Sumpter could be a regular, easy.

You know who they need to make a regular, though? Brad Leland.
Yeah, definitely. He is gold. I think we could also see some fleshing out of Wade Aikman next year.

There has also been some talk of making the cast more representational of Texas - FNL does itself proud by being one of the few shows where the characters live at or below the per capita GDP, but the excellent portrayals of Smash, Corrine, and Santiago notwithstanding, they could mix the main cast up a little more. And I think SPOILERS Coach Taylor's transfer to East Dillon may open the way for that.
Well one more episode to go. All the JD/Dad drama stuff has come to a head quite nicely.

I also liked the fact that not every Dillon Panther game can end with a miracle come from behind victory.

I am real anxious to see what questions we are left with after next week's finale. Obviously, JD will be around (I hope. His character and his family has grown on me). The pending school district split could make for an interesting dynamic, but the show really hasn't developed any underclassmen to "take over".

I think starting with a whole new bunch of fresh faces might be too much of a shock to the audience, or maybe just me. And while I would love for riggins to be around forever, I think its time that he and lyla move on like Smash and Street have. Matt is my favorite character, but I want him to be able to move on the most. I want him to suceed in life and be able to fulfill dreams that he never thought could become reality.

man, i love this show.

Holy shit, who would have thought that Billy Riggins was capable of giving one of the best monologues of the series? That was halftime-at-State, Tim-to-Street on the boat levels of awesome.

Fantastic final shot, too. This and Mad Men need to start up again already.
Amazing. What a beautiful, completely fitting ending to some of my favorite characters, and a WHOLE lot of questions left to be answered.

Billy Riggins speech was excellent. Probably the highlight of the episode.

Im curious what Matt meant when he told his grandma they were going home. Does this mean he is staying in town? I love his character, but I really want him to move on to bigger and better things.

Joe McCoy has turned into a huge douche! I really like him as a villain. Also, I like the subtle elbowing out of Buddy Garrity. He too is on the outs now that McCoy is calling the shots.

I'm curious to see how East Dillon holds up now.

Excellent season from beginning to end.
Yep, Saracen gave up the Art Institute of Chicago for Dillon Community College.

Not a great move in my book - loyalty is fine, more than fine, but this was an important step in his maturity.

Some people have said the ending was implausible, but others have said, and I believe them - when you have someone like Joe McCoy, who controls the purse strings and the franchise player, they get what they want. In a way, it parallels Coach Taylor's hiring - he was brought on as Jason Street's personal QB coach as well.
I think that Saracen's decision to stay in Dillon was showing some maturity on his part. He realized that he doesn't need to go to Chicago to discover who he is. He's happy being in Dillon, taking care of his grandmother and being with the girl that he loves.

Um, and it also allows them to keep him around as an assistant coach at East Dillon HS. Riggins is going off to college, so his role is decreased *in theory* and they have to keep 1 of the original players in the picture.

Katims and co have said that the decision to keep Saracen in Dillon (assistant coach or no assistant coach, and we already saw how well that worked out with Street) came from the place that many of the dudes in the original book are still hanging around Permian. It'd be unrealistic for everybody to get out.

Next season, Saracen and the Taylors will obviously be back (and it'd be interesting for them to spend the first few episodes of season 4 on the off-season and see what Coach has to do in the year before the season actually starts. Plus, everybody loves a Christmas episode). Tyra and Lyla will get Street/Smash-like send offs to go do movies or whatever. Taylor Kitsch has been pretty vocal about how much he loves working on the show, and he's definitely (again) the show's "breakout star/character." I've heard rumors that they're going to find a way to keep him around. Everybody loves Tim Riggins, after all. Could I use more parentheses in that last paragraph?
The show only focused on Street, Smash, Sacren, and Riggens so I don't see the problem with all of them leaving. That's a very small sample.

The problem with Sacren is that he's staying for all the wrong reasons. His grandmother is being extremly selfish. Most "moms" want to see their kids succeed. She just wants a babysitter. And she won't even recognize him by the end of the year.

Being in love with Julie is the worst reason to stay because he'll resent her for it when she starts applying for colleges and leaves. She is going to be a senior after all. No chance she stays in Dillon.

Should have had Sacren say he's going to take a year off to care for Granny and wait for Julie to go off to college instead of seemingly blowing off his future.

So it's the Dillon Panthers vs East Dillion Lions as the last game next year with the Panthers needing the win to get to the playoffs. The Lions may have a win or two but pull off the victory.
No new footage yet, but a sweet little commercial for next season.

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global...setId=P5770265

Coach Taylor has a tall order, but if you've seen the S3 DVD extras you know he has one thing going for him: Buddy quits the Panther boosters and comes over to help CT rebuild the East Dillon Lions. That'll be gold.
And those fuckers will still call Brad Leland a guest star, bullshit! I seriously feel like boycotting FNL until they finally give him his due.
So, they've lined up two of the new actors for next season: This guy, who I've never seen, and this guy, who I think we all recognize and are as happy as shit to see in FNL.
Nice little promo piece for season 4. http://www.nbc.com/Friday_Night_Ligh...son-4/1166310/

The hotness of Lyla and Tyra will be sorely missed, but I have faith that FNL casting department will find suitable hotness to replace them (although good luck replacing Minka Kelly). I'm jealous of my brother and all others who own Direct TV.

What do you mean, wee-early? The thing is airing in a couple of weeks on Direct TV. If we can have threads for Supernatural started the day after the last season ended, we can have one for a far superior show.
Yup. I was surprised at how quickly the premiere date is coming up.

Question: Should I find "alternative" ways to watch the show and watch what I can when it airs on NBC, or just wait?
You have to wait like 10 months to watch it on NBC. Think of the things that could happen. Traffic accident. Mad gunman. Freak lightning strike. Alien invasion.
Thanks for approving of my future behavior and scaring the shit out of me. I'll try to DVR the show when it's on NBC to make myself feel better.
The ratings on NBC were abysmal last year, and yet the show got renewed. The DirecTV money is the only reason these last two seasons exist.
No. If it wasn't for the critical success and the constant badgering from fans as well as the DirectTV deal, the show doesn't see two more seasons.

The exchange rate from either of those into currency is extremely poor.

Seriously, who gives a fuck?

You're about 3 years too late calling bullshit on this show's chances, buddy. Go find some circa-2006 IMDB threads to spread your negative vibes. This is an unfortunately far too rare case of a deserving show being thrown a lifeline. All praise is due to DirectTV and NBC. But if you think the fans and the critical reception had nothing to do with it, you're an idiot.

Are you off your meds?!?

My original comment was directed at people discussing how they could support NBC, suggesting that if they care that much, DirecTV should be the target of their gratitude.

I watch the show. I like the show. I'm glad it's still on. The only thing I had "negative vibes" about was the ability of fans and critics to keep shows on the air. Tons of canceled shows have small but vocal fanbases. Many of them get critical praise. Yet nearly all of them stay canceled.

FNL is still around because of DirecTV. They were looking for ways to offer unique programming to stand out from their competition. Right at that moment, a show about football (DirecTV makes a fortune from the NFL Sunday Ticket) with a reduced price, that also happens to be really good, became available. There's nothing negative about that. I'd say being saved by a business decision is better news for a show than being saved by the power of positive thinking...

Yes I am.

Just surprised you're making that point, since it's pretty old news around here. But listening to Peter Berg on the Bill Simmons show the other day, he was pretty clear that word of mouth has definitely helped FNL stay on the air. He said random a compliment from a doorman about the show to an NBC exec is the sort of thing that makes the world of difference. Without that vocal support and the overwhelming critical praise, NBC and DirectTV do not bother with that show-saving agreement. It is a shame that other excellent shows like Frank's Place couldn't get the same deal.

But FNL not only benefited from the Direct TV deal; there were some other distinct advantages, like Austin's financial incentives for shooting the show in the city and hiring local talent. There was some fuss about that recently, about the show needing to hire more Texans. If we get more Brad Lelands, Jesse Plemons, Liz Mikels, James Powers, etc., hell, bring 'em on.

Hey FNL fans,

Was the scene with Buddy effectively starting the East Dillon Boosters in the Direct TV version of the finale?
