Lazy character rehashes

I was watching Wayne's World 2 yesterday and it slowly dawned on me that Ralph Brown's roadie character is just plain lazy. Now I know its meant to be a riff/resurrection of Danny from Withnail and I but the whole thing seems so sloppy. Christ, I've seen the film a dozen times but I think after watching Withnail just last week it seemed so jarring to see the same actor play pretty much the exact same character in two completely different films.

Anyone think of any other sloppy/successful/pointless rehashes? I seem to remember Collateral briefly had Jason Statham in his Transporter get-up at the beginning, but I can't recall if that was intentional or just his cameo giving that vibe.

....Oh and can we avoid the customary "Every character X has ever played".

(There was another one I'd thought of but I've completely forgotten. I'll post later when I remember...)

I'll give them the Withnail rehash because 1) it's obscure enough that many people probably didn't get it at all, 2) the fact that there is no attempt at all to distinguish the character makes it feel more like a homage than a rehash, and 3) it's a really funny character, who made all the best parts of the movie.

If you really want to complain about rehashing in WW2, your gripe should be with bringing in Christopher Walken to recreate the exact same dynamic they had with Rob Lowe in the first film with an ostensibly different character. That was fucking lazy.

Harrison Ford in ROTJ, end of thread I think.

If we're doing mandatory mentions, might as well throw out Rocky Balboa, Rambo, John McClane, and Indiana Jones while we're at it.

In A Better Tomorrow II, Chow Yun-Fat playing the twin brother of his character who died at the end of the first film.

Completely unconnected apparently, although that was the rumor at the time.

The only good part of the movie is his Ozzy/M&M anecedote so I'll give you that.

I know that most people wouldn't have been aware of Danny so it's not as if its winking at the audience but my main gripe was the fact that it set up the character and then pisses him away completely. The fact that didn't distinguish between the two characters just made it seem all the more sloppy; nicking the character for a few laughs.

"Lethal Weapon" 3 & 4. Hell, movie four introduces Chris Rock, whose character seems like a lame rehash, and that's the only chapter he's in.

"A View to a Kill." Moore was done with the Bond films long before they were done with him.

"Terminator 3." Yes, the world got nuked at the end. Everything leading up to it was more of the same, but somehow less at the same time.

Seth Rogen's seems to be going down this path. Now it could be argued that he's just being himself and this is the reason he's the same from film to film, but I have a feeling he doesn't even think that.

That being said, I did enjoy the films but just wonder if the guy has any range.

His characters are somewhat similar but to me that's not the same thing as a blatant and lazy rehash. That would be like saying that Tom Cruise is lazily rehashing the same character over and over. It's more like playing different variations of a screen persona.

Apparently Rogen is going to show some range in the upcoming Observe and Report though
