Random MST3K questions

I'm a huge fan of the show and during the past 5 or so years I've slowly gone through every single episode. Rewatching some of my favourite episodes reminded me of a few questions I've had about recurring jokes.

What are these referencing:
  1. When in the movie someone shouts someones name, Mike/Joel and the bots start shouting random names and the last one is always McCloud.
  2. When some action stuff happens in the movie someone shouts “Mannox!”.
  3. The phrase, “you magnificent bastard”.

Sometimes they'd also just do the "dah dah, dah-dah!" from the Mannix theme .
1. I think on the McCloud show there was a penchant for people to shout his name out when they either saw him or needed him.

2. Mannix was a pretty active dude.

3. It's a line from Patton, when he outmaneuvers Rommel: "Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!"

Semi on-topic, and I'm sure it's been mentioned elsewhere, but is this cool or what?

We now have full confirmation of the upcoming panel at Comic-Con in San Diego, Friday, July 25, 7:15 p.m.

On the panel will be: Trace Beaulieu, Paul Chaplin, Frank Conniff, Bill Corbett, Joel Hodgson, Jim Mallon, Kevin Murphy, Bridget Nelson, Mike Nelson, Mary Jo Pehl and J. Elvis Weinstein. Wow.

The moderator will be Patton Oswalt.
Oh shit. Are they all still friendly? I assumed they had drawn battle lines or something.
That's a panel I'd love to attend.

Sorry I have nothing other than a fangirl comment to offer on this thread, but I needed to express it to the world.
If anybody from here going to the Con makes that panel, please give us a full report.

Thanks for the answers.

There's a 20th Anniversary set coming out from SHOUT! Factory soon. They're supposed to announce the content of that at SDCC. This will be the first release from SHOUT! They've left Rhino after being there for many years. Maybe the new deal works better for everyone involved, and they're all more friendly. Money changes everything, like Ms. Lauper used to say.

Boxart (actually, it's a TIN!):

(Props to TVShowsOnDVD.com)
Oh my God. There is no way that's a season set, if only because a season of the show would cost about 200 bucks and be 10 discs.

Please be a season...

And I think they're all still friends. It's just life happened and they all moved on and around. It's not like they try to stab each other at first sight.
The competing projects doing basically the same thing is kind of odd, though.

And I think the "McCloud" thing is supposed to be his boss yelling at him. I don't really remember that show very well, though.
I watched Mannix and McCloud religiously as a kid. I wanted to be Mike Connors so badly.

I know it's from the movie, but I still refer to people as "The Amazing Rando" when they think they've done something amazing.
My favorite was to describe anything boring as "Saaaannnndstoooorrrrmmm...Saaaannnndstoooorrrrmmm "
That boxset looks beautiful. I'd probably buy without even knowing what's in it.

"Rock climbing, Crow."

"Rock climbing, Joel."
I just found out I work across the street from where they filmmed this show and the movie. Not a huge fan, but that's still pretty cool.
I'm actually watching MST3K right now. It's the "Horrors of Spider Island" episode. I so wish I could attend that panel at comic-con, and that box set will be mine as soon as it comes out. Oh yes...it will be mine. I just hope it doesn't have any of the episodes I already own on DVD, as I own all the Rhino box sets.

Bingo.
From what I've been reading around the 'net, there should only be 4 eps per tin... and they hope to get the next one out in early 2009.

Here's hopin' there's actually more than four in each collection.

Thank you, I knew none of this. Hopefully SHOUT! will have more strength in negotiating licenses for the underlying films; the rights windows for the movies in the Rhino sets were often frustratingly brief, leading to the sets quickly going out of print (and becoming unreasonably expensive due to speculation).

Yeah, that's what you get now, without the big ol' fancy tin.

Didn’t they film it in Edina. A buddy of mine and I toured the shop and sets somewhere between 1994-1997. None of the cast were there, but a couple of techs were building bots. It was all pretty cool.

Yes, Deep Hurting was awesome, but no match for the power of Hypno Helio Static Stasis.
I always loved Servo's rants that begin with "Dun na na EAT IT MOVIE!!!...."

Yeah, I'm still pissed I have a hole in my collection where Volume 9 should be. Thankfully, I got Volume 10 when it first came out, and was able to snag Godzilla vs. Megalon.
Oh, how I'd dearly love to be at that SDCC to see that panel.

"The Incredible Melting Man is made with pudding, so he's moister!"
I quote this show with my mom all the time. I grew up watching it with her, and we're the only people we know that really watched it. She had about 90% of the episodes taped, and now she's slowly replacing that collection with the dvd sets, and also from some guy (I forget his website) who has super high quality copies of all of the episodes and will burn copies of episodes that aren't in any sets for a reasonable price.
Well, good news for those of us not going to SDCC-- the set above is slated to include a recording of that reunion panel! Additionally, trailers for some/all of the movies in the set, a "History of MST3K" featurette, and yes, FOUR episodes.
Probably my all time favorite TV Show.
I think the quality went down quickly after the move to the Sci Fi channel, because the Sci Fi Channel managment never really "got" the show, but at it's height on the Comedy Channel there never was a funnier show.
You will probably never see full season sets becuase of copyright issues. They never had the rights for the video versions of the films..they only had the rights to show the films on TV a certain number of times...and they have to renegotiate for DVD rights, and that costs a lot of money.

I would have to go with the conventional wisdom and put down "Manos" as the best single episode, with "Pod People" and "Hercules versus the Moon Men" close seconds.

"Got Change For A Eight Year Old"?

I think we're technically in St. Paul here. Perhaps some of it was filmmed in Edina, I know at least the movie was filmmed here.
My favorite is still Twelve to the Moon, which contains this classic exchange...

French Bad Guy: We could rule the planet!

British Guy: What do you mean, 'we'?

Tom Servo: It is French for 'Yes'!

...and also features a visit from Nuveena, Girl of the Future.

Here's a question that's been nagging at me many an episode: Just what are they referring to every time they say "Damn, thought I was Dale"?

Mother and daughter look alike, in a Grape Nuts commercial. Wiki here-- apparently, the MST3K guys were actually referencing a dish-soap commercial that had a similar premise and got the dialogue mixed up.
That 20th anniversary set is a little disappointing. Just seems like a regular release with a fancy package and a couple of extras.
Another mystery answered! Thank you Hammerhead. Man that one bothered me, they did it all the time.

Wait, they named girls "Dale" back then?
And earlier. See: Dale Arden, Dale Evans.
Well, they did indeed announce the set's contents last night. Retrospective stuff, lobby cards, a Crow figurine, and the following eps:

Quote:
FIRST SPACESHIP ON VENUS
In the 1960 sci-fi thriller First Spaceship On Venus, a mysterious magnetic spool found during a construction project is discovered to have originated from Venus. A rocket expedition to the mysterious cloudy planet is launched to discover the origin of the spool and the alien race that created it.

LASERBLAST
In 1978's Laserblast, young actor Kim Milford plays an ostracized teenager who stumbles upon the remains of murdered mutated alien in the California desert. Along with the alien's remains, a high-tech laser gun and power source are accidentally left behind by the extraterrestrial murderers. While examining the equipment, the teen inadvertently mutates himself with a laserblast, and embarks upon a murderous rampage.

WEREWOLF
1996 horror flick Werewolf begins with an archeological dig in an Arizona quarry. The Native Americans at the dig site recognize an unearthed skeleton as the remains of a werewolf, yet the team of archeologists are skeptical. When a dig assistant becomes infected and transforms into a werewolf, the ambitious team leader begins a horrific experiment, infecting the oblivious townspeople with the werewolf virus.

FUTURE WAR
In 1997's action-packed Future War, a race of evil cyborgs kidnap humans from Earth's future to use as slaves, and take dinosaurs from the past to use as trackers. A determined slave, the "Runaway", escapes and makes his way to present-day Los Angeles. There he must fend off the cyborgs and their trackers, the police, and the government, befriended by a prostitute-turned-nun who runs a halfway house.
(episode info taken from the PR as posted on TVshowsOnDVD)
Good selections for the first two, although the best part of Laserblast is the credit ripping on Leonard Maltin's review ratings.

Wow, this makes Future War seem much more ridiculously awesome then it actually was. A more accurate description would be "Girl and Boy walk around the city in plaid a lot."

I actually dig the Werewolf episode, mainly because my brother and I sat around making fun of it when we first saw it on cable about a year after it came out. We weren't as good as the MST3K crew, but it's still a fun novelty.

Probably my favorite end credits riff ever. They go through his book listing all of the generally well-reviewed films that Maltin gave fewer stars to than Laserblast.

I have a MST3k question...

I've been wanting to get into the series for quite some time now, but the sets are too expensive for me to just blind-buy without knowing about them. So, what DVD set has the best riffs?

Volume 6
is almost worth it just for Teenagers From Outer Space, one of my favorite eps. (whisper-thin lad! muffled voice in trunk! report for torture!)

The Essentials (comprising Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Manos, Hands of Fate) is cheaper and may constitute a better general introduction.

Many of the truly classic eps remain unreleased. This is where the Digital Archive Project comes in...
"No one over the age of 5 should say, 'Pow.'" I love Laserblast. And the credits are great for that one. So are Werewolf's as they sing along to the end credits song.
Man, I hadn't thought about the DAP site in a while. I was pretty active on there at one point. It's an impressive group of fans.

Here are some good photos from the panel:

Werewolf is one of my all-time favorite episodes, so this is grand news. An instant purchase. TUSK!

Whichever volume has Space Mutiny, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank and the Girl with the Gold Boots. The only bad one of the bunch is a really shitty version of Hamlet that they can't even make funny. But trust me on the other three, particularly the first two. Gold. I think it may be Volume 11.
Space Mutiny might be one of the top 5 episodes of the entire series. The constant "manly" names they come up with for the ruggedly muscular hero stills sends me into a fit of giggles.

"Big McLargeHuge!"
"Meat Slabchest!"
"Point Lookmad!"

'Tis Volume 4.
