Bunch of those Film Crew discs are available instantly, too!

Cinematic Titanic's got a really shitty distribution deal. The disc apparently comes in a paper sleeve when you buy it from them.

I watched some Film Crew on Instant, and while it was okay, I wasn't really all that impressed. Cinematic Titanic is the project that's got me more excited. Maybe I'll just go for a download.

I'm enjoying Rifftrax quite a bit. They've rendered the Star Wars Holiday Special very nearly watchable.

Also, they've got the smarter business model.
Eh, Rifftrax doesn't do a thing for me. Smart business models aren't funny.

The hit/miss ration is wildly off from the MST heyday, but some of the RiffTrax are still plenty goddamn funny. The earlier ones were generally weaker. They've improved over time.

Weirdly enough, I've found the funniest/more entertaining to be Troll 2 and Willie Wonka, both Rifftrax done by Mike and someone who isn't Kevin or Bill. Willie Wonka with Neil Patrick Harris! That one take a bit, but by the time it hits the factory, it was pretty much constant greatness. And Troll 2's just clicked with me. I think I've listened to that one about 5 times for some ungodly reason.

Part of the problem is in their choice of targets. I'd be the first to say that Fellowship of the Ring is overvalued by geekdom at large, but it certainly isn't deserving of the MST treatment. And as bad as Star Trek V indisputably is, there's more fun to be had with something like Red Zone Cuba.

That's the thing with Mike; one gets the feeling that he holds most movies in sneering disdain, and not just the bad ones. In fact, he's outright said that he thinks most science fiction is stupid. Joel always seemed like more of a film enthusiast.

Like I said, I'm not sure how much of the riffing he was responsible for. I know he was one of the writers, but I'm not sure what he wrote. I just know his character, with his "GUH-GUNK!" throat noises grated on my spine. It speaks to how great Trace was as Dr. Forrester that I prefer their antics over Pearl's. Or maybe how crappy Pearl is. Or both. Although, I'll have to try to find a copy of one of the Larry episodes you mention. That's season 1, correct? Before Kevin Murphy took over as Tom?

Clay and Lar's Flesh Barn was amusing, but otherwise Earhardt was forgettable.
Yes, that's season 1. Also there was a brief time in which Joel wore a green jumpsuit.
Also loved Gerry and Sylvia, the Mole People, and a nod to Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.

This 'Mike is bitter and mean' thing is new to me. I always found him (overly) optimistic and peppy compared to Joel.

I take it The Movie plays better on home video? I saw it in theatres and felt it was trying too hard. Also, watching Dr. Forrester work alone with no underling to abuse was just sad.
To me, Joel always came off as the nice dad to the Bots. Not as much cursing or innuendo, a general sense of ,"Well, they tried. Unless it really sucks, we don't have to totally rip it,". Plus, totally mellow. Mike felt more like the fun uncle who didn't really have to be responsible and they would just shred EVERYTHING about the movie with no remorse. Which is why I liked Mike more, 'cause Hobgoblins sucked really, really bad. Really bad.

But Joel was totally cool. And Trace was the better Crow. And Frank was awesome. I got my roommate so hooked on the show off my old recorded from Sci-Fi tapes in college that even after we weren't roommates anymore, he'd still come over and watch old episodes. Ahhh, good times.

You should try reading some of his writing sometime. Not that it isn't funny, but he's often pretty mean-spirited.

Exactly. Listen to any interview with him, he doesn't really seem to be a movie buff, not that that is a qualification to rag on Hobgoblins. I met the dude, and he was fairly cool, but he was also kind of a dick, which of course I loved.

I've really got nothing against Mike, but the show did lose a lot of its natural charm when Joel left.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention, I'm Cherokee Jack.

Well now I'm going to have to give Rifftrax another shot. They've done an episode of Star Trek: The New Voyages. That's just awesome. Plus, Jurassic Park, with guest riffer "Weird Al" Yankovic.
After watching a few of the trailers at Cinematic Titanic, I'm sold. The Oozing Skull awaits!

Another favorite MST3K moment: there was an episode where Joel and the 'bots are complaining about how bad the movie is, and Dr. Forrester says what they do isn't all that hard -- so he and Frank somehow switch places and riff on the movie. And are spectacularly hilariously bad at it: "Oh, and look at that car!" "Yes, I'm sure there's something you could say something about!"

Yes, not to mention the one time Gypsy went into the theater. Some random Hercules movie.

Her only good line: "Hey look guys, they're steam cleaning the horses!"
And I think she finally says something like "Guys, this movie isn't very good."

They've done two. The Walter Koenig ep is a better track, and more deserving of riff.
Of course, that means that I'd have to download the episodes. What if somebody sees me? I don't think I can take that kind of humiliation.

Why is the Satellite of Love shaped like a bone? Im thinking that maybe its a reference to 2001? Am i right?
It is, and they went one step further and used the shape for a first-season hook when the SoL was invaded by demon dogs.
Oh, i gotta try and get my hands on the episodes from season 1.
tcjsavannah, from what Mst3k episode is your avatar from?

That just caused me to have a severe manic episode. Genius.

Man, I need to rebuild the old collection. My tapes are all pretty much worn through, so I haven't actually seen an episode in quite a while. I'd forgotten what it was like to laugh that hard. Kinda hurts.
I may or may not have a file that will allow one to access and acquire old MST3K episodes. I don't know how kosher something like that is here on the boards, but if anyone is interested...It involves something that rhymes with abhorrent...ironically.

"Progress Island, USA" kills me every time. They really should do an official "Shorts!" collection. With all of them.

The 20th Anniversary Collection is being released soon, but if you don't want to wait, there are a ton of full episodes through Google Video. That's how I used to watch them for a while after my DVDs got stolen.

John Saxon is in it. Sweet.

The MST3K'd "Mitchell" is one of the funniest 90 minutes ever committed to video.
It and Pod People (and Cave Dwellers, too, I guess. Those were the only episodes Blockbuster and Hastings ever had to rent.) is what made me the lover of MST3K that I am today. A cry of "Mitchell!" almost escapes my lips anytime I hear the name spoken. But I have restraint, so I don't say it out loud. Just in my head

Has there ever been any Mst3k merchandise? Like action figures, and such?
I know there is a Crow figure included in the Mst3k dvdbox, but its too small. I want to own lifesize figures of Crow and Tom Servo. That would be awesome.
No, but there were "recipes" that circulated around the internet when the show was on with how you could build your own. The robots themselves were made from household items (Crow: bowling pin split in half, lacrosse facemask, etc.; TomServo: gumball machine, toy train, etc.) so people spent hours trying to figure it out.

EDIT: here's a sample of what I'm talking about. http://www.mst3kguy.com/Bots/BotsTop.htm

My cinematography instructor was the Special Effects DP on Final Sacrifice. His epic embarrassment when I brought it in to class was incredibly awesome.

For the record, I was introduced to MST3K with Joel but still love Mike (I think they're both great). I don't like Pearl but love Bo Bo and Observer. I also think J Elvis Weinstein is one of the biggest douchebags on this planet.
I was introduced with Mike on Sci-Fi but watching earlier episodes, the show did lose a naturalistic charm when Joel left. The riffing had more energy and a greater ad-libbing vibe.

I did a search for "mst3k" on eBay and found some of those things (gumball machine, lacross facemask) for sale. I was contemplating buying them and building my own Tom Servo and Crow robots.
