This is the episode I point to when people say that the Sci-Fi episodes lost something (not that I want to start that argument again). MST3K has to be the most consistently funny television series ever. I don't think I've ever seen a single episode where I didn't laugh until I was out of breath at least once.

My contention has always been that the movie riffing stuff remained funny once they reached the Sci Fi channel, but that the in-between stuff became unfunny, lame, and dull. It was made worse by the fact that they were clearly trying very hard to be wacky. They should have just done away with the framing device altogether at that point.

Let's just call a spade a spade: it's Pearl that unfunny and lame. The stuff between Mike and the Bots I still found amusing even in their last season. But Pearl and Bobo were just flat and very fastforwardable.
Agreed. Pearl, Dr. Bobo, and let's not forget the Brain Guy. Ugh.
Oh yeah, that stuff sucked hard.

Although who here misses the old invention exchange? Pork-a-rena anyone?
I think most people would agree that the Joel skits were funnier than the Mike ones. They tried to add a little too much story to the proceedings without realizing people didn't care about that stuff, and just wanted to see the movies.

I do think Mike used to be more vicious with the movies, which is probably why I dug his style more.

Completely agreed that Volume 4 is one of the best box sets around. Grab up the single disc of Mitchell if you can, though. Volume 2 is also pretty amazing as well, with Cave Dwellers, Pod People (Trumpy!), Angels Revenge (pretty horrible Charlies' Angels ripoff told almost entirely in flashback) and a whole disc of shorts. There's also a great disc called 'The Essentials' that comes with Manos: The Hands of Fate and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (which may be my favorite episode of all time)

My favorite was the evils' invention, Johnny Longtorso. It was an action figure that only came with a torso, and you had to buy accessories to add limbs. "The Left Hand Action Playset" is something I love to reference when ripoff toys come up.

I have all of those Rhino single episode discs. They waste a lot of space on the shelf, but the nice thing is that I can arrange them in order. The box sets just mix episodes together willy-nilly. I never got around to buying all the boxes, which pisses me off, because I'll never get the Godzilla episode now.

I really hope The Magic Sword gets a release. That was the first episode I ever saw.

"In a touching ceremony, they were married by Grady from Sanford & Son."

I always reference the Daktari stool, the Jack Palance voice-changing mask and Super Freak-Out in everyday life. Not to mention the hobby motorbikes.

Mitchell is the best episode ever. Space Mutiny is probably tops from the Sci-Fi era, although Rosdower and Troy run a close second.

Agreed that Pearl, Bobo and Brain Guy did indeed blow.

Better than Servo screaming is just before when Joel drops his head into his hand.

Another episode that is sorely in need of a DVD release is "City Limits." I'm sure somehow, someway, James Earl Jones is responsible for us not getting it though.

Yeah, I can't argue there. That's what it lost when it went to Sci-Fi. Still, during the Sci-Fi era it was better than 99% of the other crap on TV though.

I'll go further and say the show was never the same post-TV's Frank.

Has anyone checked out Cinematic Titanic? Looks like everyone (aside from the Rifftrax group) is back on board.
I saw a live version of Cinematic Titanic. It was pretty good.

I'll shoot my rep in the foot and say I never enjoyed TV's Frank. I don't know how much of the riffing he was responsible for, but his on screen antics always annoyed me as much as any Pearl bit. For this reason, I really enjoyed the MST3K movie.

I imagine the images of red boxes are already being loaded.

MST3K: The Movie is fucking phenomenal. I don't care that it's shorter than most episodes, or they're slogging on a supposed "classic" (for the record, This Island Earth is not good no matter what length you watch it; Forbidden Planet it's not), the jokes come at such a brutal pace it leaves me gasping for breath.

"You know what my kids would say?"
"You're not my real father!"
"Doesn't even have any kids, poor deluded Joe."

"Since when was the military in the business of renting out jets?"
"Yeah!"
"It was a favor from some friends at the Department of Defense...I hope your taxpayers don't mind."
"WE DO."

That and "Mike Broke The Hubble" was the best non-movie side skit during the Nelson era.
It was MST3K: The movie that gave us the amazing Rondo and his adventures against Eastman.

My favorite part? The manipulator arm control is stamped "MANOS".

"Oh yeah, breach hull, all die. Even had it underlined!"

The perkiness with which Trace says this line as Crow still makes me giggle like a schoolgirl.

Indeed. I also love the whole bit in the film with the bizarrely pointless science experiment: "Oh right, this is back when science didn't have to have any real purpose." And the line that kills me every time: "Yum."

Plus:

"I'd like to thank me for flying Me Airways."

"Don't worry, it's magnetic."
"And that would mean something if my hands were made of metal."

And Trace leaving was the end for me. HATED Pearl. If I had my way, they'd have stayed in orbit around the Planet of the Apes and had Professor Bobo as the new mad.

Damn, now I have to hook up the VCR and circulate the tapes....

I'd just like to say the constant barrage of quotes in this thread makes my daily slog a little bit better. Never let it die!

The line in the movie that does it for me: "Normal view. Nor-mal view! NOR-MAL VIEW! NOR-MAL VIEW! NOR-MAL VIEEEEEEEEEEEW!"
"Catalina Caper" was the first episode I ever saw. I knew it was love when, after a scene with a painting being stolen cuts to a shot of a ship's horn blowing, any time a ship's horn blows for the rest of the film, Tom says, "And another painting is stolen!"

Then there's my all time favorite episode -- "Cave Dwellers":

"Look, it's Jimmy Carl Black from the Mothers of Invention!"

"Keeper of the Seven Keys of Fintoozler!"

And Tom's utter indignation when Ator goes hang gliding never ceases to bring joy to my heart:

"Oh come on! Okay, let me get this straight, he kills the deer, stretches out the hide, cures it, builds an anodized aluminum frame and learns how to extrude and weld, all in about ten minutes. Gaaah!"

Or the other Servo staple of "I'm Huge."

And during Angels Revenge

A scene in which a gas station explodes, Mike says "The air is filled with slim jims and obscene trucker tapes."

Oh, I couldn't agree more. One of the best line readings ever. Servo is king.

Another favorite, from OUTLAW...the Jack Palance staring sword and sandles travesty. The thick-necked hero bites into an apple and chews. And chews.

"I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass and I'm all out of ass."

And then, quietly, as he walks out of frame, Servo whispers...

"Try the apples."

Priceless.
I'm firmly in the servo camp. The way he just delievers stuff not to mention sophisticated way he goes about things. Also due to his shape, always dressing in drag.
Servo was always my favorite, too.

Followed by Mike. Sorry, Joel-lovers. Although Joel was great, too.

Remember when screen savers were supposedly cool on your computer? Well, I had a MST3K:Movie screen saver that would play lines from the movie. I don't remember exactly which lines, except for one that will always remain with me. "Then I ram my ovipositor down your throat and lay my eggs in your chest. But I'm not an alien!"

As for Comedy vs Sci-fi, granted, I only started watching when it was already in the sci-fi era, but I always liked the newer ones best. I didn't really care about the host segments so the fact that they sucked didn't matter. It was always about the movie. And The Touch of Satan ("This is where the fish lives." "This is where my tongue lives.") and Agent for H.A.R.M. ("Watch me open the hell out of this door.") are tops on the Comedy Ladder of Hilarity.

That was actually Mike.

And I love Tom, but I'm a Crow guy. Between "A Patrick Swayze Christmas" and the Kim Catrall song, he's usually got the strongest skits, and he's got most of the lines I remember:

(over footage of a luge run)
"The French have a word for it."
"It's 'AAAAAUGH I'M GONNA DIE!!!!!"

(over a very blurry poorly-shot scene)
"Here's where you can see the driver turn around and shoot Kennedy."

(as the mutant gets beat up in This Island Earth)
"Oh, I'm very vulnerable there! Oh, there go the piano lessons! Oh, I can't remember my dad!"

Oh, and the end credits for "Werewolf" are just sublime:

These two statement add up. Crow was originally performed by Trace Beaulieau, who had left the show by the time the Sci Fi channel episodes began, to be replaced by Bill Corbett, who wasn't nearly as funny. If I'd started with those episodes, I'd probably prefer Tom as well. As it is, nothing can defeat early Crow.

Heresy. Frank Conniff was one of the best writers the show ever had, his character aside. Although your dislike for his character is easily remedied as well. If you can find one, watch one of the early episodes with the throbbing pain that is Larry. Whatever you think of Frank, you'll agree that he comes out on top in that wrestling match.

"Sledge Riprock!"
"Tank Concrete!"
"Bronc Drywall!"
"Stump Hugelarge!"
"Chunk Pylon!"
"Chunk Manmusk!"

"Chuck Hardslab!"

He's right, Tv's Frank was far better than Larry. Hands down.

Also I'm a Joel man myself. And I'm not just saying that because I once got to meet the man ten years ago. But I always liked his delivery and sort of sweetness to his role.
Yes. For whatever reason, people see Nelson's viciousness as a plus, but I honestly really liked Joel's gentler humor. Darker isn't always better.
So how come The Film Crew has discs on Netflix, but Cinematic Titanic doesn't? Not okay.
