Obama is sort of a moron

Why the hell would Obama let Bernie Mac do a standup routine and then preach to him about family values right after the set, knowing he pretty much jokes about those things in all his routines.

At least he likes Wilco.

Or, one might ask, what the hell was Bernie Mac doing busting out with that sort of material in such a setting? You'd think he'd be media saavy enough to know what would result as a result of saying those sorts of things in that context. Yes, I think it's prudish, hypocritical, immature, counterproductive, humorless rubbish for people to react as they did. However, that's our world and we all know it.

Obama should've been totally clear and have left no room for error by saying "Look, you know you gotta keep it G rated here, right? I know you know that, not saying you don't... but it's my responsibility to point this out. Tone it way down." Clearly that didn't happen.

Bernie Mac seems like the real dolt here. He should have known better. He should have had a better grasp on the context.

Forget Obama, what about his team? No one saw the potential bombshell possible in this type of situation? Seems pretty obvious to me.

He's a comedian.

Same deal happened with David Cross at an event for Dean back in '04 when he launched into his Strom thurmond bit.

I still don't see him catching as much flack as the guy who invited Colbert to the Press Corp Dinner.

You can pretty much place the blame on anyone and you'd be right. I figure Mac doesn't really give a shit one way or the other and will use this as free advertising.

Yeah, but, uh... Colbert's funny. Big difference.

Bernie Mac not funny? Jesus. I guess humor really is subjective.
Yeah, you know, I can't make a blanket statement about every single joke Bernie Mac has ever told. But the joke in question? Not really very funny.

Well Mac is funny...the joke? Sort of crosses the line, sure.

Politicians should know by now that comedians and politcal fund rasiers don't mix. There were problems when Whoopi Goldberg made obscenity laced remarks at an event for Gore (back in the day) and the right wing press made a lot of hay out of it. Kudos for Obama for heading this off ASAP.

Oh and Benie Mac should have excersied some common sense before getting on stage...but then again, maybe he has no act without being "outrageous"
Now Bernie Mac don't back down for nobody, so don't tell Bernie Mac what Bernie Mac can and can't say. I ain't scared of you.

Considering, at a guess, Barack would have had very little personal input into who would perform if any, I object to your thread title sir.

...and Mac is powerfully unfunny in my book anyway.
This is for Goldberg and a few others: "He didn't laugh at the joke."

Anyway, Bernie Mac isn't "great," and the joke in question here wasn't funny, but he can definitely be funny. He was good in the Ocean's movies and in the first couple years of his TV show, when Larry Wilmore was the show-runner. And from what I've seen of his stand-up, it's pretty good. Not great, but good.

Also, "The Wire."

The joke is bad, but what's worse is that it's old. I'm sure Mac didn't write it.

Obama Mia!

The thing you gotta remember about Bernie Mac is, he ain't scared of you motherfuckers.

Two words. Bad. Santa.

Funny or not, that's a really tame joke. You Yanks are even more prudish than us Brits these days, and we've held that title for a long, long time. Even we had Spike Milligan calling Prince Charles a "grovelling bastard".

I wasn't talking about who is and isn't funny, but rather doing your research on who you're hiring to perform at your show. Whether or not you're a fan of his is besides the point; he doesn't do family friendly or safe material on stage, and so when he shows up and says some shit, don't act surprised. Everyone had the same response to the guys who hired Colbert: what did you expect?

People who get offended by comedians telling jokes should all be shot in alleys.

Alleys, specifically?
It hurts more that way.
Alleys are dirty, filthy places. Your wounds would get infected more easily.

I am never going to finish hit-woman school if I don't learn to think about the details.

Alas, Andrew C's dream for a leader who listens to Foghat goes unrealized yet again.

Bush seems like the kind of guy who might be into some Foghat, actually.

What about just finding the joke to either be unfunny or just straight up sucking balls?

Well, it's certainly been a ride. A long...slow ride, you might say...

Wait, the wounds or the alleys? (I should have a Cronenberg joke here but it's been a long Monday).

Then Mac joins the 99.9% of professional stand-ups who aren't especially funny. Who fucking cares?

I can't fathom why this is even remotely worthy of discussion, much less controversy.
Ha, I didn't even see who started this thread. I suppose Ambler might actually be stupid enough to believe that Obama was backstage writing Bernie's routine for him.

Because they're both black, duh.

He's no Steve Harvey, but Bernie Mac is a funny motherfucker. That's the real tragedy of this thread, the assumption by so many people that Bernie Mac isn't funny. You can't judge an act by little excerpts from Yahoo news. It's all about performance.

He's in a lot of bad movies, for sure, but that's not proof of his lack of talent as a stand-up comedian. That's proof that he's more interested in paychecks than challenging himself as an actor. Which I'm fine with. But his stand-up is quite often hilarious and I'll stand up for his sitcom. While it was nothing extraordinary, it did manage to capture his act well and it was above the average, which is more than his colleagues Steve Harvey and D.L. Hughley can say.

At least Foghat didn't write rambling, mumbly, lazy, psuedo-intellectual alt classic rock Austin City Limits-bait.

I forgot - everyone at Chud is supposed to like the same shit.

Totally true. I'm surprised that this even made the news, let alone is being debated. Sure, it wasn't funny, but that was fairly tame, there wasn't much to be offended by (assuming that's the worst thing he said, and I can't imagine that at a fundraiser for a presidential candidate that Mac would be dumb enough to do the kind of jokes we have going in the joke thread). If anything, there should be a much bigger offense taken at the current cover of "The New Yorker". Now, that's offensive - this is nothing.

Oh, hush you and your insistence on a rational comparison. Let me take my cheap shots at Mac in peace!
