Being dumb, I watched Fear.com last night.
God damn it.

You poor poor man...

I finally caught Inside. It's definitely my favourite of the new-wave French horrors mostly because, even though it's violent as hell, it never felt gratuitious.

It always cracked me up that the website for that movie was www.feardotcom.com

Got around to watching Martyrs.

Harrowing, existential stuff. The French do seem to be constantly hitting the horror nail on the head...

Next up is The Hills Have Eyes 2, and yes, the newer one. Tell me, is it worth it? As I loved the Aja remake.

I thought Martyrs had a killer first hour and started going downhill the moment it introduced its nonsensical central conceit.

It's a very DTV-type sequel, and not the good kind, like Wrong Turn 2. Doesn't come anywhere near the awesomeness of the Aja remake.

Severely disappointed with this ^ one. Blind bought this (based on my reaction to Aja's) and 28 WEEKS LATER fairly cheap used. Out of the 2 sequels, WEEKS was waaaay better.

Well, from the above two posters, I might just skip The Hills Have Eyes 2. Back to the drawing board for good new horror.

Oddly enough, you and I have the opposite views on Martyrs and Inside. Inside was high on acting and atmosphere, but got killed by sub-par writing. Martyrs wasn't great, but interesting enough if you accept the premise in the 2nd hour.

I have to disagree, Dark. I thought HILLS 2 was dumb, but an effective chiller. It wants to be ALIENS to the original's ALIEN. Not exactly successful, but i had fun.

On the other hand, 28 WEEKS LATER was a dull follow up that falls apart (goes full retard, to borrow a tired phrase) after the awesome opening sequence. One of those misfires that i find especially irritating, because framework for a good flick was there.

I recently bought PSYCHO II for cheap. Been a while for me, but I recall it being one of the best from the slasher era. Any fans? Are any of the other sequels worth a look?

I guess I was just looking for similar experiences from the 2 follow-ups and got one closer with WEEKS. WEEKS was theatrical release worthy, HILLS 2 was not.

HILLS 2 felt like a SyFy Original IMO. Now, I watch those as well (GUILTY as charged!) and many other DTV horror flicks (I'm no snob), but I was hoping for a better film than I ended up with.

Inside definitely had its flaws. I guess the big difference for me was that SPOILERS (I guess): though both films had somewhat foregone conclusions, Inside managed to keep the tension going til the very end, whereas Martyrs just kind of ambled off into the land of torture-porn. It had huge stretches that I just wanted to fast-forward through, not because they made me uncomfortable but because they were kind of boring.

Fat Elvis, Psycho II is a prettty damn good sequel to a film that should never have been sequelized in the first place. I had a hell of a lot of fun with it.

I remember reading somewhere that Craven and his son wrote the script in like a week, so there you go.

I just find it odd that Craven let something as (supposedly) poor as HILLS 2, get the green light. I hear it's quite heavy on the rape and gore? As in, no need, just there for the heck of it.

The Waxwork movies are mostly forgotten for good reason, truth be told they are not very good movies. However, they are sprinkled here and there with some crazy/retarded brilliance, just enough to make them somewhat memorable. Case in point: The Battle Wheelchair (flanked by a mob of elderly people wielding axes and shotguns)

I guess this is a recommendation for anyone that wants to see an old man wrestle a mummy.

WAXWORK 1 is a bunch of WTF kitchen-sink fun. It's been awhile since I've seen 2. I need to remedy that (it's a double feature DVD).

I know SciFi Originals get a bad rap (they're mostly cruddy MST3K quality), but I really dig SNAKEHEAD TERROR. It's one of the better ones, the climax is decent, and they use plenty of practical (lots of monster fish exploding in shotgun blasts!) FX along with the CGI.
yeah Sci Fi channel has really bad cgi effects and poor acting, but i do have to admit that i liked snakehead terror (guilty pleasure for sure)

I want to see Deadgirl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2SSL6Ipnvw waiting on my que for netflix not sure if anyone has seen it yet seems pretty interesting concept movie.

that i just watched Gutterballs and wow that movie was different. not for the faint of heart (rape scene, the mangina scene) ending was good and some of the kills where interesting too esp. the 69 death scene. here is the trailer for ya http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKXeKz7sWDM
post #367 of 6464
speaking of Sci Fi channel CGI, saw the trailer for Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus last week but ended up missing the actual movie. Anyone catch it? (looking at you, DARKMITE8). Because, as real as the effects seemed, I'm convinced they were only in my dreams.

Bought a used copy based on the awesome trailer alone. It's better than the usual Asylum stuff, which puts it at Sci Fi Original level. It's drinking party MST3K worthy, but all the great moments are in the trailer. It works as a ridiculous "GRINDHOUSE-style" trailer best.

Seeing Debbie Gibson driving a submersible was hilarious though.

I have a feeling it's a sidequel to Asylum's Cloverfield rip-off, MONSTER, as they mention the octopus terrorizing Tokyo, but don't actually show it happening. And MONSTER is basically just a tentacled beast terrorizing Tokyo.

One of my favorite cinematic images of all time. And I am now convinced that the invention of film and cinema was solely for the purpose of culminating in the scene where, apropros of nothing, a giant shark leaps out of the ocean and pulls down a plane in midflight (and complete with awesome passenger doubletake). No moving image will ever top it. It's scientifically impossible.
My review of that classic is here...http://adventuresofafrustratedwriter...t-octopus.html

Anyway, I got back from Frightfest and saw 'The Descent 2'. I liked it. I should say I'm not a MASSIVE fan of the first film. I liked it well enough though, character issues aside. I'd say of Neil Marshall's films it's the one I like the least (And also the only one I don't own). The sequel takes the 'Aliens' route and it all works quite well, we also have the US ending as cannon as we need to bring some of the characters back, a move that I'm sure will irk some people.

And dammit, the director repeats the night vision scare and it worked AGAIN. Shame on me for falling for it. It's obviously a very different film from the first one, but it still manages to pull out some scares. Personally I'd put the two films on the same level.

I liked 'Infestation' as well, I think it tried to do what 'Eight Legged Freaks' did but better. And hooray for largely practical effects. 'House of the Devil' approached greatness but didn't quite get there. I don't think the film is as clever as it thinks it is (Clues are laid out far too blatantly) but Ti West does 'atmosphere' very well. It's certainly worth seeing though.

I wanted to see 'The Triangle' because it looked like bullshit but sadly I missed it, I also gathered the Q and A was a bit cringeworthy. I also missed 'Trick R Treat' which I was gutted about, though I know it's out on Blu Ray soon anyway.

One to avoid: Giallo.

Holy shit it's bad. How bad? John Landis walked out after 10 minutes.

It's really time to give up all hope on Argento, isn't it? So sad.

Thanks for the rundown, sounds like it was a blast.
It was, and I'm really sad I missed 'Trick R Treat' as it was one of the reasons I'd gone. But knowing that it was coming out on Blu-Ray soon really took the wind out of the sails. For the record though it came out with very positive reviews, so I can't wait to get my hands on it next month.

As for Argento. Well making a film in English was his first mis-step, it's just not his language. Still, he seems stuck in this sort of 70's esque timewarp. He should just do a Carpenter and play Xbox all day.

That's a bummer. I hear it's a real fun crowd-pleasing communal experience kind of horror flick.
I read on that Infestation movie and from what i read sounds good. i was always a fan of creature features so can't wait for this one to come. i wonder when it will hit dvd?

I just saw Splinter and loved that movie. It was freaky and had good acting and some nice gore to it. The parasite was kinda interesting too.

I grabbed the only copy outta 3 stores in my area. Never go to Big Lots expecting to find the same treasures as someone else. Unfortunately.
My neighborhood Big Lots is mostly filled with Latinos and broke UCLA students, so my treasures will be glorious since the students are pretty much buying flats of ramen and water and the Latino folks generally don't give a fuck about a DVD. The only thing I have to fear is suddenly being face-to-face with Tieman over the last copy of something.
Big Lots has basically become my secret stash of a store lately. Picked up Darkman last week for $4. They have loads of copies of Slither for the same price. Christmas presents maybe?
I was flipping through a copy of Fangoria today. Jennifer's Body looks like it's got some pretty good gore. To bad I hate Megan Fox anymore.
I'm curious about Jennifer's Body. The Diablo Cody and Megan Fox combos just doesn't seem like it should go well together. If your right about the gore, this just screams sleeper.

Perhaps maybe a Teeth vibe?
There's a pic of a dude laying on the ground with his chest hollowed out, and his guts strewn everywhere. There's a joke about Jennifer stealing his heart-along with everything else. I'll rent the "Unrated" DVD that's sure to be released.
JENNIFER'S BODY seems to have a lot in common with GINGER SNAPS. I'll be seeing it. I even prepped myself by finally getting around to watching JUNO, which I enjoyed more than anticipated.

I've got SAW 5 and DEAD HEAT waiting to be viewed. Can't seem to muster up the enthusiasm for either.
Ew, Saw 5. I need to drop by your store and check out your horror offerings, since 20/20 doesn't have much in the way of horror.
Yeah, SAW 5. I only just got around to watching the Saw films this year, and the completist in me demands I watch part 5. The logic pretzels they have to twist themselves into in order to justify the sequels amuse me.

I'm pretty confident my store has the best horror collection in town, especially since I took over the buying. Our Eurotrash horror selection is second to none.

I don't waste my time with that SAW bullshit, but DEAD HEAT's entertaining. And with Steve Johnson makeup FX!
the Saw franchise has gone down and down and to add lemon juice to the wound they are making a Saw 6 ugh i wish they would stop.

I just got the Mimic movies and i remember 1 and 2 being good just have to watch 3.
You'll all be happy to know that I blew off SAW 5 to watch Russell Mulcahy's 80's classic RAZORBACK. Phenomenal. It's available on DVD only through the Warner Archives collection. I'd advise purchasing it. Or come to Cinefile in LA and rent it.

Speaking of LA, I had a hand in booking TRICK R' TREAT for a screening on October 2nd at Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater. 35mm print, Mike Dougherty in attendance. Tickets are going to go fast so I suggest buying them online --

I'm going to give Devin a heads up so it may appear on the main page soon, but I wanted to give the LA faithful in this thread first dibs.

So, the bare bones Creepshow BR comes out today. My DVD copy is just shitty enough to warrant interest in a new transfer. Anyone?

I'd love to pick it up, but it's freakin' barren. Where are all the extra features England got?

OMG i loved Razorback. I have been looking for that movie on dvd for a long time. I remember going to the old video store when i was in college and trying to find some good horror to come by. I always saw the box (yep had a vhs in college) and always passed by it. so for shits and giggles i rented it one night and loved it. wish netfix had it, but i guess i have to go to the website to purchase it, or see if any stores will carry it.

I didn't know about this until you mentioned it. You can buy the thing for about $8 at the moment and it looks pretty stacked. Just went and got myself a copy.

On topic, if you guys ever get a chance give Storm Warning a chance. It's pretty by the book until the last twenty minutes. When I saw it with an audience people actually gave one of the kills a standing ovation.

I checked this one out a few weeks ago based on your recommendation. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, although I wasn't as wowed by the kills. In fact, I think I liked the setup even more than the payoff, if only because I find the idea of being stranded in a boat far more terrifying than crazy rural people.

I saw 'Storm Warning' as part of a Frightfest thing they did last year in Notting Hill... They showed Jonathan Hensleigh's pussy cannibal film 'Welcome To The Jungle' (shit beyond words), 'Storm Warning' and then the main event; 'Mother Of Tears' with Argento in attendance!

'Storm Warning' got a better reception... tho' MoT has matured enough in a year and a half to become a guilty, cheesy pleasure guaranteed to give you odd dreams.

Did a few FrightFest films this year that I can tell you good folk about very briefly....

'The Hills Run Red' was a good time spent but failed to live up to the hype I had heard about it...some good gore and Big Willy Sadler save it from some crappy acting, a couple of dodgy fx and the knowledge afterward that it had been trimmed for an R rating with no Unrated cut in sight. Boo.

'La Horde' was also fun, but it seems that folk are really trying to push it into the 'New Wave Extreme French Horror' thing when for my money it was much like a French version of Snyder's 'Dawn...' remake.

'Macabre' was an 'Indonesian/Singapore' production that slugged along for 20 mins before turning into an incredibly bloody gorefest... not a great film but by the end most of the remaining cast members are slipping all over the fucking shop on the grue and glop... so worth a watch then.

'Dread' based on Clive Barker's 'Books Of Blood' story seemed to elicit a love or hate reaction from most people... I loved it. Far better than 'Books Of Blood' and alot more of a mature piece than 'Midnight Meat Train'. It may have lacked that films pace and gory fun but it delivered slow burning, psychological chills, good acting and some briefly seen but effective and strong violence.

I also saw 'The Descent Part 2'... have to say; I was expecting a turd but, like alot of folk, came away incredibly satisfied. I could quite happily watch'em back 2 back like one long film and have a great old time.

Sure it lacked the originality of the first and I could pick apart some of the choices made for it (did not really buy into the fact that Juno survived) but dang; the audience was jumping, and clapping the gory kills and in the end if pushed to mark it against the first I would say it was a good 7.5 to that films 10. (I fucking love 'The Descent'!)

I kinda wish you'd inviso-texted that for spoilers.

I'd really liked the original, but had planned on skipping the sequel. I guess I'll check it out now.
