HAPPY HELL NIGHT: best Slasher of the 90's?

I recommend ABSENTIA. Micro-budget, but extremely well-done, with a fantastic premise (frankly has the premise of a studio-worthy horror movie; if I were a creative exec I'd be looking into a remake). Managed to legitimately creep me out a couple times. Gets a little cheesy when it tries to explain things, but I also respect that it didn't try to get away with explaining nothing.

And I owe it all to Netflix ranking. Based just on the trailer I don't think I ever would have bothered, but Netflix said I'd rate it four stars. Which I probably will since I can't do 3 1/2.

from the file marked I don't get it: I saw the well respected horror comedy The Revenant over the weekend, which got alot of buzz in the Horror scene a couple of years ago, in some case favourably compared to Shaun of the Dead. Frankly I just don't understand what all the fuss is about. I think I laughed once the whole movie, and thou it's never dull would hardly recommend it to anyone. 5/10 at best.

For those who havn't heard of the film it stars David Anders (best known for playing the evil Adam on Heroes and the evil real father on Vampire Diaries) as a KIA Iraq war vet who goes all Romeo-with-personality once put in the ground. Once reunited with his best friend, they decide to become team Punisher and kill local scumbags in order to get his daily fix of blood.

The film does attempt to be something other than the latest Dawn rip off, and has some good ideas, but the ideas are never really explored, probably due to the low budget.

Excellent. This was on my radar but the imdb rating put me off a little.

According to a quick search, it's been mentioned a couple of times in the past but it's worth mentioning here- check out the short film "Treevenge" by the guys behind Hobo w/ a Shotgun (which I still have not bothered to watch). It was made a few years ago, so it may be old news but here it is:

"Treevenge" (16:01)

http://vimeo.com/5048966

I'm on a short film kick right now. So while I'm at it, this is also amazing and disturbing and extremely creepy:

"Follow the Sun" (3:54)

http://vimeo.com/25474499

and giving Dead Alive some competition in the gore department, this horror/comedy is worth your 15 minutes:

"Brutal Relax"

Treevenge is pretty damn fun.  Caught it last year.

Demons 2 is a lot of fun, but VERY different from the first.  It is also the only official sequel.

The proposed Demons 3 was reworked into Michele Soavi's The Church, which is a pretty solid horror flick.  If you are going to watch any of the unofficial sequels, that's the one to see.  I've seen Demons 3: The Ogre, which is pretty bad and has nothing to do with demons.  I own Black Demons (as part of a set), but haven't given it a look yet.

There's a made for TV Lamberto Bava movie called, I think, THE MASK OF THE DEMON, which also gets tagged as DEMONS 5. Seems very rare but I kinda want to try to track it down.

The Burning Great 80s slasher gem. Be mindful that I watched this for the first time after a very long period of shrugging off tired slasher flicks. Reminded me why I loved them in the first place. The slashers first assault wipes out half the fucking cast in less than a minute. Not adults playing teens either. Actual preteen actors getting hacked apart. Classic.

THE BURNING is fab. Sebastian OB and I have been trying to screen that for a year now in LA, but some butthole projectionist stole several key gore scenes from what seems to be the only existing print. Bastardos!

Definitely see The Church. I think that one is just on a different level quality wise because Soavi is just so much better at the whole director thing than Lamberto Bava and the rest.

100% agreed.  All of Soavi's horror work is more than worthwhile:  Stagefright, The Church, The Sect (aka Devil's Daughter), and Cemetery Man.  He's been teasing a return (actually a few returns) to the genre for almost a decade now.

Even though it's a work-night, I would like to do a double-bill since Piranha has a short running time. I need something with a similar running time that's worth staying up for. Suggestions?

I did not see the thread in time to post any suggestions... then again I don't know if anything I thought up off the cuff would have been any good or not. That sort of set-up does sound pretty awesome, though.

I also really dig this poster:

Yeah, I've heard reviews that were quite mixed. I wasn't able to see it on the big screen as it never came to Orlando.

That poster is rather awesome, though, as they did the 80's-riffic thing quite well.

The title is great; it may be the best part for all I know. IMDb says it was made for only about 20 thousand bucks. It could be something that tickles my fancy... but it also could be something that ticks me off as something that is trying way too hard and it's just annoying.

I've come across it on Netflix Instant; I haven't given it a few and I don't think I'll renew Netflix early next month when it runs out; however, I need to see a horror film sometime soon as it's been too long. It may very well be that one.

I've seen Hobo and I thought it was quite ridiculous and wacky... and great at the same time. I really dug it.

Yeah, I saw this last month and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The Raft Massacre is indeed pretty sweet, but the fact that I wasn't turned off by any of the characters is a big plus. One annoying-ass character, especially if they're one of the protagonists, can really sink things. And I am amused that three people from the film became big stars later on (Fisher Stevens, Jason Alexander, and Holly Hunter).

Well, that's some poppycock. Talk about unfortunate.

Like I said I need to check out a movie in this genre soon. I've been neglecting it.

This was accurate. Demons 2 was not as good as the first, but still pretty much THE SHIT. Loved loved loved it - kind of scarier than the first time around, actually. The kid demon was... upsetting. The Church is coming up soon, can't wait.

The Church is pretty freaky and disturbing in some parts. The Philip Glass music is great though. Demons 2 is like the first. Just about zero plot and don't try to make sense out of anything, because your head will only hurt. Still, it's a whole lot of fun. It features a Gremlin, and quite a few of the same cast members from the first. Including Bobby Rhodes. This time as HANK THE GYM INSTRUCTOR.

Sucks about that print of The Burning. That's definitely one of the better 80's slashers.

Shit. EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC was on Encore tonite and I missed it. It's pretty infamous, and I remember hating it, but really wanted to give it another chance.

It's an entirely different kind of horror (at least tonally), but I think you'll really like it.

I avoided Exorcist 2 for years because of its "reputation".  Finally caught it last year and really enjoyed it.  Is it a good sequel?  Not really.  Is it batshit insane and a ton of fun?  Absolutely!

Out of print, and not on Netflix, i was really in the mood to see this, but unfortunately is going for over a hundred on amazon:

I saw this late one night a few weeks ago on MeTV or one of those other nostalgia networks.

This weekend I caught a weird and wonderful Dutch film from 1992 called THE JOHNSONS. I had never heard of it in all my long years of horror fandom and just sort of picked it blind from the funky indie video store I used to work at. it's got an evil fetus, a septuplet of murderous zombies, voodoo, a machete weilding mother-daughter team -- all delivered with a European art-house sensibilty. I would KILL to find a print of it to screen for Josh and I's horror series. It's not available streaming but it can be got at Amazon. High high rocommend.

From IMDB:

"According to an ancient Indian tale a giant monster embryo residing in a crystal vase is predetermined to fertilize a blue-eyed woman. She will give birth to something evil to unleash horror and destruction upon human kind. Ugly septuplet brothers reproduced within the framework of mysterious genetic experiments terrorize a young innocent girl who seems to be chosen for the sinister predestination"

I first saw Exorcist 2 around 2001 or so on cable at my Brother's house, and loved it. Particularly Burton and the Morricone score. As a follow up I could see people not liking it, but there's so much craziness going on that you can't help but keep watching.

The only thing I remember about EXORCIST 2 - as I was a teenager - was how goddamned hot Linda Blair grew up to be.

The only thing I remember is an African man waving a rope through locusts or something and screeching "GA GA GA GA!" intercut with shots of Linda Blair as Pazuzu.  That's not actually true.  I also remember Ellen Burtstyn in it and Linda Blair with electrodes on her head.  I guess I need to see it again.

No Ellen B.  Louise Fletcher instead.

This is one of my favorite "bad" movies ever.  It truly is fascinatingly misguided and off-putting scene-by-scene.

THE ENTITY hit Blu-Ray today. One of the underrated ghost stories. Barbara Hershey is pretty great, in a fearless performance. A true cult film.

POSSESSION is the shit. Very excited to be seeing a newly restored/remastered 35mm print at the end of the month.

Funny, literally just watched it. Even if it is the best slasher of the 90s that's faint praise, and it's pretty bad at times, but still decently entertaining. You're right that it feeling like a holdover from the previous decade helps. Considering it was only from '92 I wouldn't even call it a throwback.

I'm thinking about setting the DVR for Brian Yuzna's THE DENTIST. It's on late tonight on EPIX. I've never seen it. Is it worth a look even as camp?

It's a (somewhat) better movie than you'd expect, and pretty entertaining. Worth DVRing, I'd say.

Just watched Creature again, the 3hr TV miniseries based on a book by Peter "Jaws" Benchley. I know it's dumb but I saw it on the listings the other day and decided to DVR because sometimes I just need something familiar to sit and vegetate in front of. Craig T Nelson IS Dr Simon Chase, a marine biologist who studies sharks because he is obsessed with finding a cure for cancer (what was it in Deep Blue Sea again, a cure for Alzheimer's? why can't it ever be because they think sharks are cool). Giancarlo Esposito gives a career worst performance as a crazy babbling weirdo who helped create the world's first shark/human hybrid. Colm Feore shows up as a cold hearted military douchebag. Stan Winston helps out on effects, so most of the creature stuff is practical and looks decent. Has some nice locations (this is the kind of movie where if they made it today it would be a Sci Fi channel original and would look like it was fillmed in someone's back yard in Estonia). Kim Cattrall can't really act very well but looks cute as hell. At one point a shark hides in a tree, waiting for unsuspecting victims to walk under. Solid, undemanding B movie cheese.

Does anyone know if Lovely Molly is worth a watch? I am curious because it was directed by Eduardo Sanchez, who I am a fan of because

a) he did BWP

b) because on Eastbound and Down, Stevie initially thinks he is Kenny Powers' dad ("He's in Hollywood, baby! I did a little searching online and it turns out homeboy directed the Blair Witch Project.")

Conceptually, its sorta neat but man, Devin is spot on when he calls it a liability nightmare.  Can't imagine all the kinks that need to get worked out for this to become even remotely plausible.

Sanchez has actually had some success post-BWP. Altered is neat (it's on Instant, or at least it was a few months ago), and his weird Asian demon movie Seventh Moon is also worth a look, although it's not as novel as Altered. His wiki page says he's working on BWP3.

What's Lovely Molly about?

Anyone know how long until VHS comes out?

VOD end August 31 and Theaters Oct 5 I loved it when I saw it.  Can't wait to revisit it.

Thank you.

I also saw LOVELY MOLLY when it briefly played in theaters. I liked it. The cool thing about it is that you can really feel that it is from (one of) the same people who did BLAIR WITCH. It lacks a single defining image or scene (although the end comes close), but I thought it was well worth seeing.

Is Lovely Molly on VOD or anything?  I'm really curious about that one.  Oddly enough, BWP has been my least favorite Sanchez flick.  I really dug Altered, and parts of Seventh Moon had me legitimately creeped out.

I don't watch many horror movies because of how dumb and not scary most of them are. But I will say that ever since I saw the original Evil Dead it's been my favorite.
First time I watched it I was freaking out and grossed out by what I saw. Now I'm just so fascinated by all the make-up and practical effects behind the film.
Own 3 copies of the movie and have seen over 10 hours of extras on the trilogy itself.

Wasnt a huge fan of Lovely Molly, seemed like a white trash Black Swan to me and didnt really go far enough in either the mental illness or supernatural direction to be anything other than an uncomfortable ninety odd minutes. Worth seeing for Gretchen Lodge's great central performance though.

I watched The Hamiltons last night mostly because I have to see the sequel The Thompsons in about a months time....interesting...wasnt at all what I thought it would be....interesting....dont know if I can recommend it though.

BW3 still hasn't been given a greenlight.  Sanchez is currently in production on a Bigfoot film called Exists.

Just got blown away by a 40's Horror movie/film noir from the Val Lewton collection called THE SEVENTH VICTIM. Plot: a young woman searching for her missing sister stumbles on a cult of Satanists in Greenwich Village. Very effective and moody film, with shadowy cinemotography that pulls you into the film's world and creeps you out. The only Horror film on Jonathan Rosenbaum's favorite 100.

Yes, yes it does. I have a feeling the title is the best aspect of the production, though.

I haven't seen that movie in years but I also thought it was quite off-putting. Maybe I'll think different if I see it in 2012 but at the time I did not enjoy it even with all the loony things the film has.

Here's something that's been kicking around my netflix instant queue awhile. The Dunwich Horror, a 1970s Devil Worship/Lovecraft mashup-y kinda thing, starring Dean Stockwell in the Vincent Price role. It looks very interesting, for Stockwell alone, but I don't think I've ever heard a single thing about it, which gives me pause. Anyone seen it?

It is very Cormaneque. It tries to build the tention slowly going with character creepiness rather than action or money shots. The monster itself is never seen, on the rare occasion it comes into the story we either see from it's POV with negative film to signify this (and hints of medusa snake hair) or we see people reacting to it which doesn't make much sense because later it is explained the monster is invisible.

To tell the truth the whole film fell flat for me. There are some topless shots, but I could be thinking of another film.
