Bill Moyers Journal

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to watch Bill Moyers Journal as it aired on TV (generally I watch it on the net). Moyers's guests were two "conservatives": Mickey Edwards, an old school "Goldwater conservative," and Ross Douthat, senior editor of the Atlantic.

Not that I agree with conservative principles but it was a rare, refreshingly intelligent conversation on TV about politics, republicans, these candidates, and a wide array of topics. Again, even though ideologically I fall far to the left of these guys, the level of discourse was so vastly superior to what passes for news programming and political punditry in the corporate media.

Strong recommend: Bill Moyers Journal

This reminds me of one of my grad school classes.

Phenomenal stuff.

Have to say Mr. Edwards is dead-on in his assessment on conservatism and what it should represent.

I think Mr. Douthat is very intelligent and says some good things about the failures of the Bush administration, but his view of social conservatism is what I think makes the Republican Party archaic.

My main impassible break with conservative ideals is the idea that the government has no business in the commons. I believe the well being of people, the possibility of a safety net, and the notion that we are all in this together should be national priorities which I willingly pay taxes to support. I think the conservative ideal of small government - in a country as huge and nationalized as this one - is akin to the communistic ideal -- looks great on paper but is just an open invitation for corruption and abuse.
