"Let history judge me"

So, for those interested in world politics, something pretty awesome happened today in Argentina.

The country has been torn within a conflict between the Farming/Cattle associations and the Government. Basically, due to the value of the dollar and the large amount of Soy, Grain and Cattle we produce, Exports are at a record High and there is a lot of money to be made.

The Government suddenly applied a 45% tax on exports. Going up from 30%.
That made the farmers flip and started protesting. It's been four months. We've had strikes, highways blocked, massive acts and marches, "cacerolazos", and several speeches from both sides.

The general public is against the Tax, roughly 70%-30% against it. And we've lived pretty tense days with Buenos Aires being literally locked down with pro government marches taking to the streets. (The administration controls large amounts of people. Specially poor people who have no jobs or education. They give them welfare in exchange of support in their acts and speeches. It's sickening.)

The thing is that the administration is pretty corrupt and power hungry. They are VERY snobby and proud and would never back down.
Only 2 weeks ago, after a massive cacerolazo (That's people taking to the streets with Pots and Pans and making noise, walking towards important spots of the city like the Pink House and the President's residence) the president said that she was going to send the law with the Tax to Congress for debate.

Yesterday was the vote. There are 72 seats in our Senate. And the administration thought they had the votes. The vote lasted 20 hours, and at 4am, it came down to a tie. The responsibility fell on the Vice President for a tie breaker. He talked for 5 minutes and asked for a recount. He deemed the decision too important to be left on his hands. They quickly re voted and came to the same tie. So the VP, gave a 10 minute speech about the constitution, justice, politics and the state of the fractured country and how it was time to be united, and said "let history judge me, I can't vote for the law. My vote is No. And may god forgive me if i'm wrong".

The VP went against the president's bill. It shocked the country (and i'm sure it made quite a few headlines worldwide). This was at 4.30 am mind you. People went to the streets to celebrate and cheered.

The president hasn't appeared in public yet. And the VP said repeatedly that he has no intention to quit. That he did what was in his conscience.

It was like a West Wing episode. Such a great moment to see democracy work.

Anyways, thanks for reading. I thought someone would get a kick out of it.

That is a cool story, I'm going to have to read up on it.

I had heard about this increase being passed through both houses. I had not heard about it being shot down. Facinating stuff indeed.

Don't be. It's a one in a million moment. Usually the administration does whatever they want. But they've been loosing a lot of power lately.

Sounds incredibly annoying. Still, at least it's not burning tires.

Do the politicians still sing all their speeches there?

D'oh!

Wow, that does sound like an episode of The West Wing, only, you know, with added bolas and.....pampas. ?

Tati, that is so awesome. The courage it took for the VP to stand up for what's right is inspiring. I wish someone in power in this country had the kind of courage to stand up publicly and take a stand against Bush/Cheney.

Pls keep us posted about how this works out...

and some great roast beef. And thus concludes all the non-nazi argentinan sterotypes can be thought of.

Oh and something tells me, the VP is carrying these:

Hahaha, no sadly they don't.

The only news is that the president finally made a speech at a local event, but didn't address the situation head on. She only mentioned some hints regarding some traitors in her party and that they think the country should belong to some select people. (the argument the administration uses is that the farmers are all rich and they are fighting for the poor. Which of course, is a bowl of crap.)

Well, the law is no more. She signed a mandate today making it null. Taxes are back at a fixed 35%.

Huge blow for the administration.

Tati, that is a really cool story. Shaking your magic 8-ball, what do you see happening in the future?

The farmers announced that the conflict was over. But they'll meet and probably hammer out a deal that will allow the president to save some face.

What will be very interesting is to see the new strategy the administration will try in order to regain some of the lost power. Specially the people. It turned against this president faster than anyone in history. She won by a wide margin just 9 months ago. Now she's got an approval rate in the mid 20's.

how long is the presidential term in Aregentina?

Cool story.

Judging by some of Tati's photos, the government should start taxing hot women. Problem solved.

4 years. The same as you guys.

Our last president was her husband. She was a senator and ran for office. She won. It's like Bill and Hillary, only she won.

Right, I heard about that. Of course she could resign, but welcome to the club of having presdential deadweight.

Cool story, and I too am envious even if it is a once in a lifetime occurance in politics (for anyone).

But Molti almost stole the thread!

Told you people are interested in this stuff Tati!

Fuck, I was hoping it was George W saying that.
Bollocks!

Chief of Staff just quit. Agriculture Secretary and Commerce Secretary quit yesterday.

This is all supposed to happen to let the president have her own voice. She was carrying over most of the Staff from the previous administration (her husband's).
