Okay Smartypantses, If You Directed "the Spirit"...

Thread Starter
There is a LOT of pissing and moaning over the trailer for The Spirit. Personally, I think all of the naysayers are being a little narrow-minded in regards to the look of the film, Sam Jackson's character, etc.

At the vary worst, The Spirit will crash and burn in a very ambitious way, and it's nice to know that at Miller is bringing his own style to the property. Yes it's a very weird-looking film so far, but Miller's books have always been very weird experiences. Anyone remember that entire issue of Sin City: To Hell and Back that took place inside a fever dream? I see a lot of that in The Spirit trailer.

But I'm curious: If Miller's doing such a shitty job already, then how would you bring The Spirit to the big screen?

Aaaaand... GO!

Narrow-minded? Really? You're taking people's opinion of this last Spirit trailer way too personally. You dug it. Cool. I still have no idea what this movie is supposed to be. Maybe we'll have a better idea by the fourth or fifth trailer.

Maybe because it's pretty obvious that instead of taking an original approach to it, Miller is simply copying the Sin City all green screen all the time look just because he knows it's an easy sell, him being the Sin City guy and all? Where you see ambition and style, I see contrivance and a cockamamie attempt to graft one style onto another, wholly unrelated one.

Why are you so convinced this was the best way to bring The Spirit to the screen? What is going on here that merits such a vigorous defense and gauntlet throwing?

This needed it's own thread?

"Full Disclosure": I have never even heard of the Spirit before this project was picking up speed.

And as I have said in the other thread, this just looked like a rejected Bond credit-sequence. He did pretty much a copy and paste job of his own Sin-City style. So without knowing anything about the source this looks like a safe and generic (for Miller) approach with some ridiculous characters.

And what are we being narrow-minded about when it comes to Sam Jackson's character? The only thing we have to go on is what he wears. And what is the look of the film? Are these trailers actually indicative of the tone or design of the final film? We don't know. You don't know. The only thing we can judge is the trailers, themselves, not the final film they represent. Yet in the other thread you threw out an incredibly premature "You don't get it" defense and now you're throwing out an accusation of narrow-mindedness to go along with it.

So odd. It's cool that you like it. Now be at peace, my son.

Or I could have just asked that.

I don't see what's so ambitious about the trailer. It's the same old tired Miller stuff, except now he has a camera and green screen.

That's the Miller brand, Wade! You just don't get it!

Well first I would have Scarlett naked and lactating...

I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but this feels like the old, "If X sucked so bad how would you have made it better??" chestnut that's been polluting the internet for over a decade. I'd be willing to bet most people, even most chewers, don't have a personal vision for The Spirit's adaptation to the big screen.

I like how you use the absolute worst Sin City story to illustrate your point.

Furthermore, what the hell does how Sin City was drawn, in both comic and movie, have to do with The Spirit? Since he did it in Sin City it's a good idea to do it in The Spirit? Because....?

When Frank Miller crashes and burns, he does so in a supremely entertaining way. This movie can't lose, whether it's good or bad.
