Silverchair - Young Modern

Came out about a year ago, I finally listened to it about 2 months ago & I can't get it out of my head. These guys have come a LONG way since their teenage-grunge-wannabe years. Now that I think of it, Diorama is also worth your money (I prefer it to Young Modern, personally), but Young Modern is so striking for this band because they have moved even further into a looser, pop-heavy style, & are extremely good at it. Very underrated band in the States, if you ask me. Anyone here like this album?

Oh my god a thread about an aussie album on chud.

"These guys" realistically is "Daniel Johns" for all intents and purposes. He may just be the most interesting maistream songwriter working in Australia today.

This album was my favourite of last year and I still cain it when I get int he mood. Very much the next natural artistic step after the growth shown in Diorama. For me "Young Modern Station", "If You Keep Losing Sleep" and "Those Thieving Birds" are standouts, but there's not a bum track on the album.

I also have to say 'the chair' as their known in their home country have become one of the better live acts around right now. Johns has the whole "rock god' thing down perfectly. Saw them twice last year and adored both shows.

I cannot begin to tell you guys how happily surprised I was to find a thread ab9ut an aussie band here at chud.

I was a huge fan of Diorama so I bought this right when it came out last year. Definitely one of my favorites from last year. Young Modern was probably my most listened to album of last summer and I'm still playing it. They made such a huge leap forward from the grunge wannabe kids they were to this mature, confident pop band.

Shit, I thought Silverchair disbanded or something? I need to find this album! Love these gu-.. uh, Daniel Johns!

If you haven't the Dissociatives album I strongly recommend it as well. It's Johns and some Aussi DJ's side project. It's pretty cool, kind of a demented Postal Service vibe.

That aussie dj is Paul Mac - the unofficial fourth member of Silverchair. His artistic influence and collaborating with Johns on The Disassociatives is whats given Johns the confidence to go in the musical path he's on now.

Rain Dog, Those Thieving Birds is probably my favorite track from the album (Love the Strange Behavior bit in the middle), matched only by Reflections of a Sound & maybe Low. I'm really glad that there are other people here that like this band. I only know one Silverchair fan here in the States (besides their Frogstomp stuff), but I have read about how popular they continue to be in Australia. I read once that Bono said of Silverchair..."If you have to swim to see them live, do it", & I can believe it because their live bootlegs on YouTube are just amazing.

The great irony for me is, back during the early poor-mans-grunge Frogtomp through to Neon Ballroom era I was one of their biggest haters, it's only after Johns has stretched his songwriting wings (and to be fair to the guy and the fact Silverchair started when those three lads were 12 - grew up) with Diorama that I started doing what would eventually become a full 180 on the band.

Young Modern for me fulfilled the promise of Diorama and I see nothing but really interesting work in Silverchairs future.

There was actually a fantastic little hour long piece on cable here in Oz detailing the full history of the band with some great interviews called 'The Making of Silverchair' - you can watch it on youtube if you're interested - I've even been a lovely bloke and found part one for you...

enjoy.

Thanks for the link, I'm gonna check it out in a few. Even though I labeled them wannabes in the first post, I still dig a few of the tracks from their first couple of albums, namely "No Association" & "Israel's Son". I think that, even back then, Daniel Johns had a very innate understanding of how to construct solid rock hooks. Very catchy albums, if derivative.

I'm bumping this thread because these guys are worth the time. Young Modern & Diorama are two of the best albums that I've heard from anyone in years. Great production, vocals, instrumentation, & lyrics across the board. I wish this band got more love in the States, but too many people over here think of them as those teenagers that aped the Seattle sound back in the day, & won't give them another chance. Shame, they're missing out on some great stuff.

hmm. I need to break down and get these, since I loved the shit out of Frogstomp and dudes were like twelve years old when they made that album.

...and now its fifteen years later. Theyre unrecognisable - in the best way.

I listened to this last night and Rain Dog is right, there isn't a bad track on the album.

Straight Lines is really good.

Damn shame that these guys are only known and will probably always be known for Frogstomp.

Diorama is an amazing album, and while I listen to that one more than Young Modern, I love the ambition of this album and more than a few of its tracks.

Didn't the lead singer have an eating disorder? I seem to remember hearing that a few years ago.

I heard the new Candlebox album is amazing too.

*You can't be a cool (male) rockstar and have an eating disorder. At least, blame it on the cocaine.
