Gametap?

Sorry if there was already a thread about this service (I couldn't find it with the search function), but is it worth the 10 bucks a month? I saw they had Fallout on there, and I may pony up the loot just for that. Is there a limit for how many games you can download and play? I'm a complete noob when it comes to this service.

Absolutely. Been using it for months now, played a ton of games. There's no limit to the stuff you can download, and their list of games really is amazing. Played a ton of adventure and strategy games I never would've gotten the chance to. Interplay's stuff is pretty awesome (Freespace, Descent, Fallout) but the service is worth it just for Sam and Max seasons 1 and 2. Grimm is fun despite all reasoning and starts next week. (I'll have a review up then)

They also just signed a deal with THQ yesterday and are getting - Company of Heroes®, Warhammer® 40K, Red Faction®, Supreme Commander®, Titan Quest™, Saints Row™ 2, PuzzleQuest and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Seriously, the 60 bucks a year is a bargain if you think about all the games you'll play. They even have a one month trial for a buck if you want to give it a shot. I'm ARiviello on there if anyone has it.

That THQ license is worth the price of entry alone.

Are the download speeds decent for games? Like if I sign up tonight, will I be able to play some Fallout and whatnot?

And thanks for the response Alex and Bees.

I haven't got gametap, but the service I do have is smaller than Gametap's (UK-based).

The speeds are very fast, Fallout's also only a little game. It obviously depends on your connection though, but even the slowest broadband should be enough.

And I joined. rhughes is my tag.

AND THEY HAVE FUCKING X-COM!

If this works better than the configuration I have set up for it using my old Win95 disc, this service just paid for itself.

So yeah. I can't believe I hadn't used this service earlier. I already have Baulder's Gate II, X-com, Fallout and Beyond Good and Evil. Awesome.

I used the service in late 2006 and the download speeds for the Dreamcast games were horrible.

To be fair, I was using DSL and it was the beginning of when they were supporting bigger game sizes so there is a large possibility that they have improved since then.

I'd been using the free one for awhile and dug it and just started my first month last weekend because fallout was coming out today. I hadn't been able to get my Fallout disc to run in Vista so this was, of course, the height of awesome. I'm really liking it. I've been playing Tomb Raider Anniv. and Silent Hill 2 using my 360 controller and it works like a charm.

I've never had a problem with download speeds- it downloads at a decent clip. Fallout's only about 500 megs, I got it in about a half hour. You can set the manager to download while you play other games, as well.

Every week they have challenges for certain games, fun for the more competitive among you, although there's probably no way you'll be beating anyone at some of those scores they get. I weep at my Galaga score.

Rob, don't forget about Sam and Max, Psychonauts, Homeworld and Civ 4! And Sam and Max. Not sure if I ever mentioned that game before. Also, one of my favorite finds is Uplink. That game's incredible... so simple and fun. Basically a text-based game that makes you feel like a hacker.

Uplink is awesome and I have been playing that for years. Sam and Max will be downloaded, but I don't want the original to be tainted in anyways. Shit, I got Fallout in like 15 mins. And it runs perfect. I am pissed I can get my 360 controller to work with Beyond Good and Evil. That's a shame. But I'm loving this so far. I'll definately be picking up Homeworld as I haven't played that in ages. As for Psychonauts, I have that on the 360 so I think I'm good. I'm really digging this service. Wish I would have found it sooner....

X-COM!!!!!!

haha

Sam & Max hasn't been tainted. It shines surprisingly well. The humour, voice-acting and even the visuals are still pretty damn good for a game of its age.

It's just a shame no matter how long I leave it, I can't forget the solutions to the more frustrating puzzles - the ball of twine is a breeze now and makes the game substantially shorter.

I hate each and everyone of you lucky bastards. I'd easily pay double to have Gametap, but it's only available for US and Canada. It's fucking 2008, someone should have taken care of these licensing issues by now.
Canadians should take note that not every game is available to them, either. Regional licensing does indeed suck a nut.

There are services available to non-us residents (as I said, I use one of them)

Gametap is simply a brand name. Not the only provider.

Which ones?

It's a fun service. My son plays it mostly, but every now and then I'll hop on and play an old Atari or Sega game. I actually downloaded and played a bit of Tomb Raider: Legend as well. Before they got a few more different types, my son played a lot of chess on the old Atari version. They have a Lego version now, so he plays that instead. If they could make some kind of version for a phone, that would be sweet.

My UK service isn't available to Greece - It's called Metaboli. Might just be worth having a look around for services with international servers?
