Best of 2008

Thread Starter
1. The Wackness
2. The Exiles
3. Iron Man
4. Encounters at the End of the World
5. Wall-E
6. Hellboy II

That's basically all I saw save the horribleness of 27 Dresses and The Caller.
I still haven't had more fun in a theater this year than Speed Racer.
1)Wall-E
2)Dark Knight
3)Speed Racer
4)Iron Man

Saw lots of movies from 2007 the first months of 2008, so i didn't count them.
1) The Dark Knight
2) WALL*E
3) Iron Man
4) The Bank Job (this is a caper movie of the finest degree; I want to be Jason Statham)
5) In Bruges (the more I think about it, the more I'm loving it)

I'll throw in a good word for Kung Fu Panda, too. Fun time at the movies.
1. Dark Knight
2. Wall*E
3. Hellboy II
4. Speed Racer
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I'm seeing Pineapple Express on Monday, so this might change in a heartbeat.
1. Wall-E
2. Iron Man
3. The Dark Knight
4. Kung Fu Panda (I expected to hate this movie)
5. the Bank Job
The fucked thing is there are really no options other than summer movies at this point.

I'll go with

1. In Bruges
2. The Dark Knight
3. Hellboy 2
4. Iron Man
5. Be Kind Rewind

Also liked Speed Racer and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Not on my list? Wall-E.
Wackness is really up there. But I'm shitty as hell when it comes to ranking.
1. Wall-E
2. Speed Racer
3. The Dark Knight
4. Hellboy
5. In Bruges
I'll preface mine by stating I haven't seen a lot of the smaller films that I really wanted to see (Foot Fist Way, Bigger Stronger Faster, Mongol, Encounters at the End of the World). I'm in a small minority that really didn't like Iron Man that much (I recognize that it's a good film, and well made, but I just don't dig it. Too much cheese inserted for my taste).

1) The Dark Knight
2) Hellboy II
3) Wall-E
4) Iron Man
5) Forgetting Sarah Marshall
1. The Dark Knight
2. Iron Man
3. The Incredible Hulk
4. Rambo
5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
6. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I've only been able to see 6 movies all year.
Right after I walked out of the theatre from watching BE KIND, REWIND, I'd have put it on my list. The more I think about it, though, the less I like it. The last thing we need is a film that says that blatantly false misrepresentation of information as being factual is OK, even admirable if we really feel strongly enough about it. That's Karl Rove shit, however unintentionally, and it poisons the many things I liked about this film. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

As it is, I'd have to concur with Dickson - nothing I've seen has topped SPEED RACER yet. But I haven't seen DARK KNIGHT, and that won't change for a few more weeks because I'm waiting for them to scrub the stench of fanboy out of the theater walls. I'll certainly see HELLBOY and THE WACKNESS in the meantime.
1) WALL-E
2) In Bruges
3) Speed Racer
4) Hellboy 2
5) Kung Fu Panda

Apparently, I'm 13.
A 13 year old would've put TDK in the 1-5 slot.
I haven't seen Speed Racer, but I'm surprised how many people have it on their list. Pretty much everyone I know who saw it, of the few that actually did see it, hated it. I look forward to the dvd, though.
1. Wall-E
2. In Bruges
3. The Strangers
4. The Dark Knight
5. Stepbrothers
6. Son of Rambow*
7. Hellboy 2
8. Persepolis*
9. Iron Man
10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Dishonorable Mentions: You Don't Mess With the Zohan, Baby Mama, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harold and Kumar 2, The Happening

*Dunno if these count, but they came out where I live this year
post #17 of 164
Haven't seen Wackness or Encounters yet - which I realize renders this list invalid.

1. In Bruges
2. The Dark Knight (ugh, I know)
3. Wanted
4. Hellboy II: The Golden Army
5. Funny Games
6. Iron Man
7. Wall-E
8. Rambo
9. Redbelt
10. Speed Racer

Cloverfield and The Strangers weren't bad either. And I know nothing good comes out of the beginning of the year, but geez. Prestige-picture season couldn't come soon enough.
1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall-E
3. Funny Games
4. In Bruges
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

While I love these five, I'll second whoever said it above: I need fall.
I didn't care for Speed Racer much at all. (only mentioning this because of Boogen's comment above).

I can admire what it was trying to do, but personally, I wanted to claw my eyes out. Or should I say ears? Because it was the story/acting-style that just drove me up the wall. The shiny/candy visuals were interesting for awhile.

Also, in regards to Ripoll's comment: If we were playing by those rules, There Will Be Blood would be the top of my list. Ha ha.
So, most everyone is listing the exact same movies but in a slightly different order.
I will bring nothing new to the table.
I think this summer movie season has been one of the best in a long time. Despite not having an Unforgiven, Trainspotting or Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey to class it up as in previous years.

1.The Dark Knight
2. In Bruges
3. Wall-E
4. Speed Racer
5. Iron Man
6. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
7. Kung Fu Panda(really surprised here)
8. Hellboy 2
9. The Bank Job
10. Cloverfield(I like monsters and douchebags)

Edit: I haven't seen The Wackness or Foot Fist Way yet.

Definitely give it a shot. The opening race sequence alone justified my full ticket price - such graceful filmmaking, unconcerned with cookie-cutter notions of chronology and yet clear enough for a child to follow. I'd hate to not be able to love that. That's what dancing must feel like to people who can actually dance. But admittedly, if you can't meet the film on the film's terms, that's going to be a looooooooong 2+ hours. And everyone who said it could use a bit of tightening is absolutely right. It feels in a lot of ways like a 90% completed rough cut, where there was still some nipping and tucking to be done and time simply ran out on it. Still stunning.

EDIT - Matthew Fox. Fucking Awesome. Everyone's good, but Matthew Fox gets a lot of the best moments. Him and Goodman.
1. Wall-E
2. Iron Man
3. In Bruges
4. Dark Knight
5. Hellboy II
6. Son of Rambow
7. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
8. Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (I don’t know who else saw this, but Frances McDormand was pitch perfect in this. Probably put the biggest smile on my face all year, other than Son of Rambo)
9. Hulk
10. Speed Racer
11. Spiderwick Chronicles
12. Indiana Jones (I’m pretty shocked and saddened how low this ranks for me)
13. The Bank Job
14. Leatherheads
15. Rambo
16. Doomsday
17. The Ruins
18. Cloverfield
19. Wanted
20. Get Smart

List of Dissapointments:

Horton Hear a Who!
Jumper
Vantage Point
Semi-Pro
Be Kind, Rewind
1. Pineapple Express (a real comedy classic. can't wait to see it again)
2. In Bruges
3. The Wackness
4. Iron Man (Let's see if Hellboy 2 tops it for me)
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (after a limp start it becomes very good when they get to Hawaii)
6. Honeydripper (Not the best Sayles has done, but I really liked it anyway)
7. Speed Racer
8. The Dark Knight
9. Leatherheads
10. Rambo
1. The Fall
2. Taxi to the Dark Side (2007 release?)
3. Speed Racer
4. In Bruges
5. WALL-E

There are a handful of other films I enjoyed and only a few clunkers (Indy, I'm looking at you) which is not bad at all at this point in the year.
I haven't seen too much this year. I've been pretty disappointed so far, though. At this rate, I can't see this year even coming close to the greatness known as 2007. Thankfully, we still have the awards season ahead of us.

What is it with years that end with an eight? It seems that those years always end up disappointing when it comes to movies. And yes, I realize that these years do have a few great movies, just not many. Is it a curse or something?

1968 gets a pass, by the way. Any year that gives us 2001: A Space Odyssey, Night of the Living Dead, Once Upon a Time in the West and The Producers cannot be a disappointing one.
6. Wall-E
5. The Ruins
4. Iron Man
3. Hellboy II
2. The Dark Knight
1. In Bruges
0. Funny Games
1) In Bruges
2) Iron Man
3) Kung Fu Panda (personal tastes, this was the most fun I had this year so far)
4) Wall-E (first act is genuinely perfect, which made the rest seem less than brilliant, even though it arguably is)
5) The Dark Knight (again, final act problems for me, moreso than Batman Begins)
6) The Orphanage (a rare film that gives me the willies, though again the final scene was horrible)
7) Speed Racer (wish I'd got the chance to see it again theatrically - could be the disc that makes me go Blu-Ray)
8) The Incredible Hulk
9) Cloverfield
10) Be Kind, Rewind
11) Rambo (bit of a let down come second viewing on DVD, but still gory fun to be had)

Biggest let downs were Indy and The Forbidden Kingdom, though I didn't expect much from that one and it still managed to not live up to expectatinos.
1. In Bruges
2. Redbelt
3. Wall-E
4. Dark Knight
5. Iron Man
6. Hellboy II
7. Indiana Jones
If nothing else, this thread has made me realise that "In Bruges" is one of the worst titles in cinema history.
You get the feeling that it should have been titled In Fuckin' Bruges, that's for sure. Wouldn't make any less sense if you didn't know of the city, but would be better and more true to the film.

Worse than Moonraker?

THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN is worse. I know, I know. Clive Barker title words words words Kitamura. Doesn't matter. You can't put a trailer in a multiplex in the US for a film called THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN. It's just not going to work. Beavis and Butt-head was a documentary.
Hmm, number one's easy, but beyond that it's tough, not just in ordering, but in deciding on movies that make the list.

1) Speed Racer
2) The Dark Knight
3) Cloverfield
4) Rambo
5) Iron Man
6) The Incredible Hulk
7) RIP angels Heath & Estelle

Though second viewings (third, in Iron Man and TDK's cases) could rearrange any of those save for Speed Racer. And I wish I was allowed to put Death Proof, which I only saw in March, at #2, I really do.

EDIT TO ADD: McCartney, "RIP angels Heath & Estelle" is hilarious. That gets Redbelt's slot.
We haven't got Wall*E, Hellboy II, Wanted, The Ruins or In Bruges yet. Similarly there's a few films we got this year, which came out in the States in 2007.

So here's the best of what I have seen

1) Speed Racer
2) The Mist
3) Iron Man
4) Kung Fu Panda
5) The Dark Knight
6) The Orphanage
7) Rambo
8) Mongol
9) Incredible Hulk
10) Cloverfield

Also, I like this thread since it has convinced me to see In Bruges and The Bank Job.
1) Reprise
2) Wall-E
3) Shotgun Stories
4) The Foot Fist Way
5) The Fall
6) In Bruges
7) The Dark Knight
8) Sparrow
9) Iron Man
10) Hellboy II: The Golden Army

I didn't miss too much in the first half of the year, but I still need to see Snow Angels, Speed Racer, Standard Operating Procedure, and Tell No One.
For every movie I've seen since May, I walk out bemoaning the fact that Speed Racer is still the most fun I've had at the movies in a hell of a while. It was just such an unexpectedly fun blast of a movie, it's very strange see the summer's real heavy-hitters failing to measure up to it.

Anyway, so far the list looks like this so far:

1) Speed Racer
2) Cloverfield
3) In Bruges
4) The Dark Knight
5) Hellboy II

The only other contender for the Top 10 of 08 so far is Wall-E, so we'll see where it lands when the list fills out as the year progresses.
I'm so happy to see Speed Racer up here so often! You guys make me feel as happy as this guy:
http://fundivision.net/wp-content/up...6/jump__12.jpg

After Speed Racer, in no particular order since I'm adding as I think of them:

In Bruges (great and hilarious)
Snow Angels (really low-key)
The Forbidden Kingdom (just had fun with this one)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (just fun as well)
Iron Man (RDJ!)
Son of Rambow (great kids)
The Strangers (enjoyed the technique)
Kung Fu Panda (2nd most fun in the theater)
Wall-E (EVAH?)
Hellboy II (ectoplasmic schwanschtucker)
The Dark Knght (switched addresses)
Rambo (great movie to see with a crowd)
Cloverfield (interesting approach)
Run Fatboy, Run (just for Pegg)

Wow... I had forgotten I had seen some of those. Feels like such a long time ago. I didn't care for Indy 4, The Incredible Hulk/Wanted (both entertaining but forgotten soon after watching), Made of Honor, Prince Caspian, Smart People, Jumper, 21, Be Kind Rewind...
Totally forgot about Wanted and The Mist, so my new list looks like this:

7) Speed Racer (wish I'd got the chance to see it again theatrically - could be the disc that makes me go Blu-Ray)
8) The Incredible Hulk
9) The Mist (dodgy first half hour, brilliant everything else and THE ending of the year.
10) Wanted (lots of fun and about 20 times better than I thought it would be based on the trailers)

11) Cloverfield
12) Be Kind, Rewind
13) Rambo (bit of a let down come second viewing on DVD, but still gory fun to be had)
After tonight, an extension and a do over is needed.

1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall*E
3. Pineapple Express
4. Hellboy II
5. Speed Racer
6. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
7. Cloverfield
8. The Bank Job
9. The Visitor
10. Iron Man
You still have to explain your lack of In Bruges, Mr. Clark.
Still haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm working on changing that this week.
Why are we doing this now? I mean are some of you guys not going to see any movie now that the summer season is over?

In terms of films which were released over here this year mine has to be

1) There Will Be Blood
2) In Bruges
3) Persepolis
4) Exte: Hair Extensions
5) Savage Grace
6) The Dark Knight
7) A Complete History of My Sexual Failures
8) Mad Detective
9) Elite Squad
10) Wanted
It doesn´t make really sense for me to put up a list since most of the "big ones" are only coming out here later this year. Yet.

Anyway I would like to humbly submit "Recount" as a sure Top 5 candidate. Watched it recently and it blew me away.
I just automatically assume that such a list this early is one that will be updated as the year goes along. More like a 'Best of 2008 Thus Far'.

I think it's at least interesting to see the lists now when certain films are fresh. Because with time, some of these opinions will change.
1. WALL*E
2. THE DARK KNIGHT
3. SPEED RACER
4. IN BRUGES
5. HELLBOY 2

SPEED RACER almost topped DARK KNIGHT for me. And it still might, later in the year.
Based on what came out here this year, my number 1's pretty obvious. Haven't managed to see nearly everything I'd have liked to, though, so list is a little sparse and rather mainstream.

1. No Country For Old Men
2. The Dark Knight
3. Wall-E
4. Iron Man
5. Sweeney Todd

I did manage to see I'm Not There and The Lives of Others on cinema screens this year, for what that counts.
Kinda surprised at how the Dark Night is beating Hellboy in everybody's list. I honestly think that Hellboy II is the better movie.
My surprise is I thought Funny Games would be on more lists. Oh well.

Since everyone's posting top tens here's mine:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall-E
3. Funny Games
4. In Bruges
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
6. Iron Man
7. Hellboy II: The Golden Army
8. The Bank Job
9. Teeth
10. The Strangers

EDIT: Sorry Ali.
Haven't seen a lot, but still:

1. The Dark Knight
2. In Bruges
3. Wall-E
4. Iron Man
5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army
6. Repo: The Genetic Opera
7. The Bank Job

How did Number 7 happen? EDIT: Ah, found the Repo thread.

And is In Bruges supposed to be on there twice? I mean, it is that good, but just checking.
