Geometry Wars 2

Fuck GTA4. This is my game of the year.
Ooh, I know what I'm doing tonight!
Geometry Wars is my favorite game of this generation, and it's not close. Can't wait.
Looking forward to giving this a try. When they first announced GW2 for XBLA, I wondered if it was going to be any different than the Geometry Wars included in Project Gotham Racing 4 - called Waves. But my understanding is that Waves is just one of multiple game modes included in GW2.
I don't know why I'm not home playing this right now.
Holy shit this is an addictive game...
Shit, it's out today? I thought it was next week. To the 360!
Wow, at first I was a little hesistant considering I already have Geometry Wars 1 but after 10 minutes playing the full version that worry went away. This is way more than a graphic and music upgrade. None of the game modes suck and all of them play differently. Totally worth the ten bucks.

Slater's scores are already ridiculous.
Oh sweet Jesus, I had no idea that this game was coming out today, and so this thread is like waking up from a coma on Christmas and finding out that the sexy nurse has developed the Florence Nightingale Effect.

Preach on. Any one mode is more than enough meat to keep me occupied for hours on end, but to see all 8 games lined up like that, it's almost daunting just how much gaming bliss I'm getting for the money. This should be a wake up call to all gaming developers on how to make an exciting and downright gorgeous game for less than a $100+ million. Okay, back to Waves.

Yeah, what the hell? I shudder at the thought of where the bar is going to be next week.
Played the demo, and loved the old school feel of trying to beat your friends' high score. Very nice touch.

Wasn't sure about the 800 price, as I wasn't able to play any other mode except the 3 min. timed mode, but I like what's being said here. I will make the purchase.
Awesome fucking game. Wish it had online multiplayer, though... it's really missing out on that.

It's a bit odd, but I'm thinking that there must be a reason for it (technical, budget, etc) rather than just not thinking about it.

This is a game that would get absolutely destroyed by even a split-second of lag. Especially once things start getting insane.

King kind of blows, but I love all the other modes. And I'm absolutely obsessed with Pacifism.
Same here. Who would've thought that not shooting would be so much fun? I can't get that 5 gates achievement, though.
I like King but Pacifism drives me nuts. I end up running into the end of the gates more than the bad guys.
So I didn't have a 360 when GW1 was all the rage so I missed out on that. Am in the process of downloading 2 right now and I gotta say, just hearing you guys talk about it has me REALLY excited.

Nevermind, just got it.

Is it just me or are these some of the most fun achievements ever? I just wish there were more of them.
I'm just about sick of failing for the Treaty achievement at 28 or 29 but the rest are a lot of fun, yeah. I'm assuming you need to shoot at the gate full-time in order to get the Rebound achiemement. I think I've only made it to about 30/75 so far.

The trick with Rebound is to not even bother with the gate until you're about a minute into Deadline (without dying). Once the board is packed with enemies, you can take out 75 bad guys in a matter of seconds.

And this is probably obvious to everybody, but the only way to get the Treaty achievement is to fly through every ring without stopping. If you pause inside any of the rings, you're pretty much fucked.
Right thumb is already starting to blister from getting such a workout, but its worth it. The smartest thing they did was add the leader boards to the top of every mode. Nothing gets me more pumped than just barely overtaking Creature Corners top score or getting angry when a friend overtakes mine. I have given up on trying to pass Mantooth though, I am but only a man.
Oh, son of a bitch.

Should I nearly go hungry for this game? I don't get paid until Wednesday. The discussion on this thread is not helping, mainly because I adored GW1.
You won't remember to eat if you start playing this game.

So, get it.
Done and done, M'sieur R'viell.

Shouldn't have said that! Just spent the last half hour trying to top your scores. Bwahaha. Although I still can't do too well on friggin' Deadline.

Oh, and did anyone else figure out what the Smile achievement is? My god....

It's to beat those levels specifically on Sequence right? Do you lose a life if you don't beat it when the timer is up? You usually start off with something easy, so I figure you could just let the timer run out for the levels you aren't suppose to beat. God help you if you fuck up on 19 though.
No... it's not that. Think "Smiley Face". You need to lose on those specific numbers... which is insane, as I haven't even beaten the mode yet.

Anyway, my review. Completely in love with this game.
Downloading this today.

Oh, God help you wallet-draining assholes if there's something awesome coming for Rock Band next week.
I am loving this game. They fixed all the nagging points of the original. And no wonder this is Slater's game of the year. He's the man. I love it that he sets the bar so high. I wonder, is he the top of all his friends?

Also, did they rename the old game to just Geometry Wars? I swear I saw the name change in my list as I was waiting for GW2 to load into the list.

That's the only other thing that had me hesitate before I pulled the trigger. Honestly, I can go without Rock Band DLC for a few weeks because I'll be playing this nonstop. Sure, I don't have the skills to hang with most of you guys but it's still fun as all hell.

Great review, Alex.
Bought it today and moved a bit up the leaderboards. What a fun fucking game. Way moreso than the first. And I love the King game type. That's a blast.
Well now that I've finally had some free time, a good controller, and some adderall, I was able to top a few of Mantooth's records. I've accepted the fact that I suck at Pacifism, but I managed to get quite a game going on Sequence, Deadline, and Evolved and walked away with the top scores. I doubt they'll last long (which is the fun of it) but the rush you get from it all is unlike any game I've played in awhile.

Also, this is filed under "Holy God, how have I never known that?!" but I JUST realized that the bombs give you no points. My entire deal for Deadline was to unleash my bombs at the end when the multiplier was highest. This has changed my strategy immensely.
I've got Treaty, Wax On and Slalom - and I consistently get 7/8 on Surf, but Rebound just fucks with me. I can't get any higher than 9 out of 75.

And yeah - fucking love this game.
The best thing about this game is that, unlike the first game, if you get bored or tired of what you're playing, there are seven other options for you. I'm currently obsessed with Deadline and Waves.

I gave up on the Treaty achievement. I top out at 27 or 28 because the diamonds get too damn fast.
You think that's bad, try topping out at 29 several times in a row.

Alex's and Slater's' Pacifism scores scare the shit outta me, though.

You're not the only one. I'm loving the level of competition though.
My friend's got a score that's either 98 or 99 million. Ridiculous.

Your friend is a cyborg.
This game sux.

(the previous critique in no way reflects upon the critic's ability to play said game, and in fact just re-inforces the critic's obvious and completely valid point)
I finally got the Magpie, Millionaire and Surf achievements. Been trying like hell to get the Wax Off - just not happening. And I guess I don't have Slater as a friend so I don't know what his scores are, but yeah - Alex is fucking untouchable.
Got Treaty last night, got 97% of Wax Off before diamonds spawned right in front of the last 3 tiles, and have very slowly started to inch my way up my friends list.

I can't even recall the last time I was up till 1 am with a single player game.

I found that if you make sure to leave out the direct opposite side that you entered each circle, away from the approacing diamonds, you basically make the diamonds go around the circle to get to you. This can buy you a valuable millisecond to make it to the next one. However, you do have to get lucky and have the next circle in the right location.

And the Sniley achievement? Not only do you have to selectively fail the ones you need to fail, but if you fail one you need to pass, LIKE THE LAST ONE, you're screwed.

I realized this after failing the 4th one, so I decided I am not gonna put myself thru that disappointment. Failing that last one would call for controller destruction.

You're better than me at this game. I'm not going to say by how much, but I thought you should know that.
Fuck you guys for recommending this game to me. I'm holding your opinions responsible for the hours I have lost to this game. I could've seen a movie. I could've mowed the lawn or cleaned my room. I COULD'VE CURED CANCER.

But nooooo instead I spent my hours shooting little shapes and declaring the next person above me on my Friends list's score scale to be my mortal enemy who must be bested before I put the controller down for the night.

Jesus christ, I just couldn't stop playing Pacifism. That shit is fucking Zen gaming right there. No buildup, no working towards the fun part. You just start the level and within seconds you're playing chicken/matador with 5,000 angry blue parallelograms.
Displaying the next highest score at the top of the screen is absolute genius. I enjoyed Geometry Wars a lot, but I sucked and never got completely obsessed with it. I suck at this too, but I can't believe how much more addictive it is. It really is a GOTY contender.
Fuck you guys, i have to make due with Grid Wars...

I made the mistake of thinking I could beat the high score for Pacifism. So I started playing, and now I can't stop.

Also, have any of you started playing one of the games, and then realize that you have no idea how or when you got the high score you have on the list? I have pretty decent high score on pacifism, and waves, that I have no idea how I got, and have not come close to reaching again. I had only played Pacifism enough to unlock Waves, and now I cant beat my own score. Weird.

Absolutely. I can't top my score on King no matter what I do.

Yes! I think I'm on some incredible run, and then I realize didn't even beat my own score? And then I see Slater's score at the top and a single, bitter tear runs down my cheek.
