McCain ad compares Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton

Ouch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHXYsw_ZDXg

Note: I suppose this could go in the politics forum, but I'd rather bring people over to my playground.

One of my good friends saw Obama in Berlin a few days ago. He says there was a genuine excitement from people about seeing Obama speak. I think the general attitude in Europe, is a big wish for him to win.

But I guess visiting a German restaurant in an American state, works better for the polls in America.
I don't know but I think that ad is actually pretty good for Obama. They have pictures of him that make him look good, and is basically saying "This other guy is too popular" which doesn't really make you look like a winner at all.

Schwartz's Armchair Rules Of Political Campaigning;

#1 - Do not, under any circumstances, pay to air an ad with enthusiastic crowds chanting your opponent's name throughout its entire runtime.
The comments section under the ad is WAY more upsetting.

I like the folksy music playing under the McCain-approves tag at the end. Nice contrast to all that loud excitement in the Obama part.

I'm just waiting for the not-so-subtle comparison to Hitler ad. It's coming. [voiceover] The country is facing economic hard times, locked in a global struggle... and a dynamic leader comes to the fore, promising change... [/voiceover]

I've read a couple of different blogs suggesting that the juxtaposition of Obama's image with those of two blonde, white women is an eensy bit of race-baiting. I just saw the ad during Jeopardy, and I can honestly say I wouldn't have thought of it if it hadn't been suggested to me previously.
I'm really starting to dispise McCain. That ad panders to nativist, anti-foreign sentiments big time. "Don't vote for that Negro man who won't let us drill offshore and raise our taxes and who will make us buy that FOREIGN OIL"
He may actually score some points with the comparisons to Perex Hilton and Spears. The point is he is a light weight celebrity while McCain is blah blah blah

"Obama's too popular to win! Vote for me! Nobody likes me!"

What's sad is ,come fall, this type of shit will work. Less we forget, the average retard is still looking for a guy they can fucking "have a beer with."

Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor responds:

"On a day when major news organizations across the country are taking Senator McCain to task for a steady stream of false, negative attacks, his campaign has launched yet another. Or, as some might say, 'Oops! He did it again."

Also, I can't seem to find this video anywhere else, but TMZ has a video response directly from Obama

Shit! Is it bad that I do think of Obama as somebody I could have a beer with, provided the right, incredibly unlikely circumstances? 'Cause he seems cool like that.

The whole "have a beer with" thing is a media talking point. What it really boils down to is that Americans always elect the more charismatic candidate. Every single time. Bush over Kerry and Gore, Clinton over Dole and Bush sr., Bush sr. over Dukakis.

Gore, it could be argued, had more charisma than Bush, but then, he did win.

This bodes well for November, though!

Yeah, from everything I've read Bush is a cool guy to party with. Terrible at running a country though.
seriously...Bush would be fun on a bender.

He's my hero because he proves no matter how dumb you are...you can do anything.

How do you explain Herbert Hoover?

As long as your born into the closest thing your democratic republic has to a royal family.

Bush proves if you're rich enough in America, you can do anything.

I didn't get the "for that Negro" vibe from the ad, as stupid as it is. Again, it is a great pro-Obama ad.

I recently finished watching the entire first season of Mad Men, and there are some comparisons to be made between the Nixon and McCain administrations when it comes to advertising against Kennedy/Obama. I won't go any further into the comparison, but it seems it's not entirely unrealistic.

Actually, I think it's accurate. The whole "have a beer thing" refers to the fear middle America has of anything "elitist." Obama may have more charisma but ,come November, all Average Joe will think is ," he talks like a fag and his shit's all retarded."
It's fun to watch McCain's lumbering clusterfuck of a campaign right now, but yeah...come late October, I'll be sweating.

This is so true. A couple weeks ago I was getting my haircut and these two guys in the barbershop were talking about the election. Now the lady cutting my hair was ranting about her trip to Europe that I had no interest in because these two were just astounding me. First one of them is saying that since his middle name is Hussein he must be part terrorist. But then follows it up with the gem "Obama and Osama are only one letter off". Though the kicker and truly mortifying line was "to me it's called the White House for a reason."

Small town America can be a scary place sometimes.

But don't the average dumb Americans you're referring to love celebs like Britney and Paris? Conundrum.

If there was one thing true about 2000 was that Gore did not have charisma. If he did and didn't come off like a dick in the debates. He certainly would've clenched it.

C.Swicegood 2000: "I like John McCain, the guy is a true hero and his political views are outside the Republican establishment."

C. Swicegood 2008: "This fucker needs to die already."

Yeah, Gore came off very wooden/robot-like. I am reminded of his SNL caricature in which he speaks in a monotone, flat voice. Lockbox

If the Bob Dole who did the Viagra ads showed up in the '96 campaign, then we'd have had a very different election I think. Who knew Bob was funny and down to earth?
I'd like to disagree: I would totally, 100 percent, have a beer with Obama.

Blah, anyone else in predominantly Democratic or Republican strongholds feel kind of useless sometimes? It's like, I know Obama is going to win this state (pretty sure NJ goes Dem, haven't been here for an election). Oh, I'm still voting, but I just want to move to help drum up support in the five swing states that anyone actually gives a shit about and that allllll elections come down to.

Gah. I need a beer. With Obama.

Not married!
Obama is leading in all polls but one, which is considered an outlier, and has leads in a number of swing states (though within MoE). Yes, there are dumb people who won't for him because he's black. But that's not the prevailing issue, and it hasn't been yet.

Spears and Hilton are people famous for being famous, not for having any defining talent. That's the nicest semiotic reading of the use of those two. Since one is considered nuts at best, and the latter achieved her fame for being in a porno, again, it's problematic. That they are two promiscious white women may have not been the intention to suggest that Obama wants to know where the white women are at, but surely that was part of the appeal. I guess there aren't similar-level famous himbos.

The problem is that McCain's argument, especially coming from the party of Reagan, and from a man married to an heiress who - outside of the military service - is as far from working class as they come, and has been for a very, very long time.
The ad is idiotic because it's blatantly talking down to anyone who admires Obama enough to go see one of his speeches, comparing them to starfuckers who worship trash celebrities like Spears and Hilton. "This guy just wants to be famous, and YOU'RE SUPPORTING HIM! Vote for me!" Who exactly is McCain trying to convince here?

Bill Clinton was a celebrity. Played sax on the Arsenio Hall show, and was a fairly good president.

Also, um, you know, REAGAN.

But its not like underestimating the public's tolerance for cognitive dissonance has really hurt the GOP in the past.

He'd probably want me to have some crappy affordable light beer along with everyone else after paying a ridiculous cover charge at the door. I want the freedom to order a stout or a lager, even if I have to pay for it myself.

Yeah, but what a fucking party!

FYI: As I'm in this thread there's an ad banner at the top of the page polling whether it's acceptable to unconditionally meet with Anti-American foreign leaders, paid for by John McCain...

EDIT: Now it's the DARK KNIGHT! Hooray for privileged fascism!
I see a banner with McCain & Lieberman hugging and the statement "Support Our Team"

No thanks!

Those will be coming. After that doesn't work, there will be footage of Reginald Denny getting beaten at Florence & Normandie.

I got the "Change that works for him banner." The McCain campaign should check out the 2008 Presidential Election thread and save its ad money. I'm not sure if this site is his target audience.
Great article over on Digby showing that the McCain campaign recently scrubbed an article from their own website in which they called McCain a "political celebrity".

Oops.

Were you just finishing my thought or were you a fan of the show and still bitter over its cancellation?

No, I assure you, reggie-wanker does exist.
Either the Daily Show is right and McCain's campaign is intentionally inept so you pity him, or the tinfoil hat crowd is right and Obama is already meant to be president so McCain is advertising for him.
He may be GOOOOOOOOD ALMIGHTY, but would you really want him to lead?

Guess it's an official ad.

I have to say that watching US political ads is still less uncomfortable than watching Irreversible. But only a tiny bit.

I pity you guys for having to put up with this.
