Holy crap! That ad is real? Help us Jeebus!

Holy crap. I knew John McCain sucked, but apparently he blows too. Goddamn old tool.

Well, I read the other day (I don't remember where, I think CNN) that a full one-third of McCain's ads are now smear ads against Obama.

It may be just Obama fans stuffing reply boxes, but that ad is getting shredded on the Internet.

Amazing.
Simply amazing. Who the hell is running McCain's campaign?

The writers of the hit Fox News comedy show: Half Hour News Hour?

That makes me want to punch McCain and anyone who supports him.

ANYONE who supports him.

The serious answer:

The same folks who ran the smear campaign AGAINST McCain in the 2000 Republican primaries. The same people that spread vicious rumors about McCain fathering an illegitimate black child, and about Cindy McCain having a prescription drug problem.

The Sons Of Rove, in other words. They're sort of like the Sons of Liberty, only without the interest in liberty, and a deep passion for ugly, undeniably effective mud-slinging.

Obama should be worried about this. The people that visit these boards seem immune to this sort of lowest common denominator politicking, but these sorts of negative ads have a deep impact on a lot of folks.

The question for the ages: Do you go just as negative in response?

That's easy - no. It's the old saying of "Two wrongs don't make a right." You'd hope the other person is going to be the bigger man. But many times, that's not the case, which is why we always inevitably wind up with mud-slinging during these campaigns.

Ideally, yes. I agree.

But in politics, there's no such thing as 'two wrongs don't make a right.' In fact, you could argue that being the 'bigger man' actively hurt the campaigns of folks like John Kerry, who turned the other cheek on the swiftboat brouhaha as I recall, and arguably suffered as a result.

Not that I'm advocating negativity. Just that I see this as a sort of unwinnable situation. When your opponent goes negative, and you respond negatively, you're seen as dragging the discourse down and contributing to the problem of politics. When you respond by not responding, or by staying positive, you're painted as 'soft.'

What's the solution?

The way to win in these fights isn't to ignore the attacks, but to defuse them. The swiftboat horseshit sunk Kerry because he refused to say anything on the matter, and before we knew it we spent our first election in the 21st century arguing over whether Vietnam was a good idea or not. Obama, on the other hand, acknowledges the attacks and either kills them with a well timed quip or turns it into a talking point for himself. It's how he managed to get into a dogfight with Hillary and come out on top, and it'll be how he gets the upper hand come November.

I hope you're right.
