Trapped Ashes

I know there are a lot of fans of anthology horror films here, so here's another good one to check out. Really under the radar release for a movie co-directed by Joe Dante and Sean Cunningham, among others. Very sexual in nature as well... one of the better stories is a take on the classic "organ transplant gone wrong" tale where the person gets a dead person's whatever and strange things start to happen... like Mark Hamill in Body Bags. Except this one's about breast implants. Pretty brutal as well, definitely not for the squeamish.

Some fun stuff, with lots of fun cameos like Dick Miller, John Saxon and Henry Gibson. Definitely give it a rent if you can.

Reviewing this for CHUD- just got it in the mail yesterday.

Hah, alright! Save me the trouble. Interested in hearing what you think about it. The dvd's pretty packed, as well, which is strange for a movie Lionsgate basically dumped.

Yeah, made in 2006?

I hated this one! Ken Russell and others just phoning it in. And it had a segment by Monte Hellman, who I endlessly talk about in other threads. He did the segment about the Kubrick-esque director.

Nice seeing John Saxon work, though.

That was the weakest segment, I thought. But hated? That's a little strong. It reminded me a lot of a few Tales from the Crypt episodes, very campy and silly.

Funny note- my fiancee woke up and walked in the room at 4 in the morning while I was watching the film. Just so happened to be during "The Golden Breasts" where (SPOILER) the guy was having his tongue bitten off by the girl's nipples. She made the most exquisite face of "What the FUCK are you watching?"

I get that quite often.

Fixed for my own selfish amusement.

Maybe my expectations needed rewiring. I thought it was really silly for something from, and I mean this in the best way, film snobs. Lotta (what I might have miscorrectly assumed were) high-brow dudes on this thing - Ken Russell, Dennis Bartok, Hellman, not Sean Cunningham. Hellman's wasn't my favorite, but it's only one of two stories I can even remember right now.

Oh, I thought this was terrible. Really cheap production values, awful acting. Sadly, the Dante portion was the weakest of the bunch. I really don't get why these people need to be trapped in this haunted house, seemed pretty arbitrary.

Because Henry Gibson has plans, that sneaky little white-haired bastard.

And yet, I was still entertained. Rented it over the weekend. In the vein of the Amicus CRYPT and VAULT, only more low-rent. Never really scary (I thought the tape worm segment had creepy potential), and the FX were overall bad, but it had some interesting things going on for something that was appropriately DTV... and it was filthy. Sex and or/boobs in every segment.

The dvd menu spoils the GOLDEN BREASTS segment (boo!). I hate when that happens.

Saxon was unfortunately wasted (his segment takes place in flashback, played by a younger actor), but it was nice to see Dick Miller pop up for a second (Dante, come back to theatrical release).

Apparently, this film was written by the guy who helped run the Egyptian theater and he befriended the contributing directors through film screenings over the years.

Yeah, I noticed that afterwards, thankfully. How can they give away the big moment like that? Probably the best reveal of the film, too.

Yes, Dennis Bartok is the writer. He's all over Anchor Bay's out of print Two-Lane Blacktop DVD. He knows his stuff.

Never said it wasn't trash. Just that it didn't particularly give me indigestion.

The zany greatness of the first segment gets squandered with the other three. That had to be the most inconsequential vampire story I've ever seen, and the "Buddhist Hell" segment was a total mess.

What the writer didn't understand was that if you're aiming for a series of shock endings, they actually have to be interesting or shocking, or at least have meaningful story or character turns.

I can't believe they even bothered to film the vampire story. It boggles me.

Thanks for nothing, director Monte Hellman!
Bah, Hellman could squeeze out turds for 20 years and you'd still owe him.

Yeah, that kinda weirded me out. Still, damn fine review for something I wouldn't give a fuck about.

I pretty much agree with your assessment, but would probably score it higher due to my lower standards. The movie did manage to gross me out during the surgery scenes you have pictured... and there's boobies.

Doesn't make his vampire segment any less awful.

Ken Russell's segment was the shitwinner in this one.
