The "probably done already" Cartoon Nostalgia thread (share your favorites!)

Inspired by the past toy's thread, ive decided to go ahead and create a thread for the cartoons you used to love and miss from our childhood years...share openings, dissapointments from re-watching them as an adult, and so on.
I'll start with one of the greatest things about living in latin America as a kid...Im betting Tati might also get nostalgic on this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32u8i...eature=related

3 different robot shows, mostly uncensored in violence and a catchy theme song for the whole package?
Greatness...pure greatness.
"El Festival de los Robots" ... I was addicted to this when I was a kid. I think most of these shows were not shown here in the US but somehow were very popular in Latin America.

This song is the intro for the block of all of them, but each had a very catchy theme song.

You probably know this better than me, but the guy who sang those was touring all over Latin America. He also sings He-Man. Seen videos of it, really funny. This guy singing cartoon songs with huge crowds and at dance clubs. His name is Captain Nemo (I think).

BTW ... do you remember a Japanese cartoon called "Kid Monstruo"? I can't find it at all on the 'net. It was a kid who would "shuffle" his hands in front of his face to change it into monsters, very weird.

I just know that Cybersix was a strange strange cartoon.
Dude, seriously I'm writting a series of blogs on this very subject. I knew it wasn't an original idea or anything, but damn my timing sucks.
Didn't that already happen to you once today Gabe?

Beast Wars...I still have fond memories of the catchy song in the opening credit sequence...
"Dun da da daddaa BEAST WARS da da da dadda dun da da BEAST WARS"

Hells yes. I loved that show.

The cartoon based off of the American Godzilla was actually pretty cool as I remember, and I didn't like the movie at all when I was a kid.

The majority of the early 90's superhero cartoons were great (X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman were the ones I watched, if there are any greats that I'm missing forgive me).

Darkwing Duck was another big one.

Yes (well yesterday actually) with the toy thing! Either great minds really do think alike, or, more likely, I've got to try harder and work out something more original for my blog.

Anyway, on subject, I've gotten my hands on these sereis in hopes of revisiting them as a grown up:
Dino Riders
Visionaries
The Real Ghostbusters
C.O.P.S.
the original TMNT
Sky Commanders
X-Men

I can't find the Robocop cartoon yet.
Is Dino Riders the same thing as/ or different than Dino Saucers?
The two cartoons I loved so much as a kid and I'm now a bit afraid to revisit are Eek! the Cat and Mighty Max. The final episode of the latter really blew my eight year old mind, what with the whole killing of two of the three good guys and time paradox shenanigans.
Now that I think of it, in my entirely unbiased opinion, I'll say that the early 90's had the best kid's programming of any decade:
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Bobby's World
Beetlejuice
Batman: The Animated Series
Superman: The Animated Series
Eek! The Cat
Tiny Toon Adventures
X-Men
Animaniacs
Spider-Man
The Tick
Gargoyles
Life with Louie
Freakazoid!
Darkwing Duck

I agree wholeheartedly. I think that period was the crest of the Saturday morning cartoon. It was just after 80s, where He-Man, Transformers, and GI Joe convinced suits you could create some awesome synergy by making cartoons that were essentially 22 minute long commercials for a pre-conceived toyline and just before things like Cartoon Network made the whole point of Saturday morning cartoons kind of moot. My faves:

Animaniacs
Swamp Thing
Beetlejuice
Tiny Toons
Taz
Eeek! The Cat
Batman: TAS
X-Men
The Tick
Captain Planet

I double agree! the end of it came about right around the same time as Power Rangers showed up..then it was down hill from there. the cartoons today are nothing but cheap knock offs of the greatness that they once where, the writing is terrible and all you get is bright pretty colors and loud action peices, i blame the the japanese..

as much as I loved the Ghostbusters cartoon, i freaking hated the Slimer cartoon

Sorry Cap, I dont remember that show at all...as for the show songs, the guy's performance name is Capitan Memo, he's actually from Chile, and his job back in the day was writing and performing the opening themes for most cartoons; no wonder he has a cult following among the nostalgia/otaku people here in Latin America.
I also going to embarrass myself by admiting that i watched "Candy, Candy" and "Angel, la niña de las flores" as a kid...both were pretty much animated soap operas for girls, dammit.
Also, another great thing about latin america as akid was getting "Saint seiya" (Los Caballeros del Zodiaco) before DBz...as a kid, that anime was awesome, mythology, battles, violent as hell.

I found it!!!! Finally;

http://onionzeta.wordpress.com/2008/02/24/kid-monstruo/

That blog entry says it was aired in Chile too (seems both our countries had almost the same exact children's programming). I don't remember much about it, but how he would change his face. This intro is in Italian I guess, still can't find any video of the Spanish version. This came out around the same time as el "Gato Cosmico" (Doraemon).

I occasionally watched Candy Candy, funny a couple of months ago a friend of ours who is a fan of that show herself, sang us the intro to that cartoon!

Don't remember Angel, but I'm sure if I watch the intro or something I would remember.

I'm sure you watched Marco too, there was a series of Japanese cartoons that were super depressing like that one and even the version of Pinnochio would make me cry all the time :-)

Did you ever see Ninja Kamui, that was also another favorite when I was a kid.
I remember a ton of cool cartoons from 80's (beackin the day of saturday morning cartoons)

Echo the love for Thundarr the Barbarian, some LaffOlympics, Captain Caveman, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt-(yikes Im old) and pre-abomination crappy scrappy doo- Scooby Doo.Where are you?

Later..came Mask..G.I. Joe and even..Danger Mouse..hahaha
post #17 of 144
DR SNUGGLES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzIpK_nEeDU

Hell Yes. Apart from introducing me (unwittingly of course) to the writing genius of Douglas Adams (apparently he worked on some of the scripts), this show is probably to blame, along with Yellow Submarine, for my lifelong attraction towards all things psychedelic. Damn this was one trippy show. Definitely the Alice In Wonderland of kiddy cartoons.

And rejoice, apparently there's a revival afoot:

Doraemon arrived later here in Chile, when I was much more grown up...also, here's the intro for "Angel, la niña de las flores":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA-QkqlCbec

(Yup, In retrospect, that was a bit weird to watch as a male kid)
As for Marco...god dammit, that show was devastating; to this day, i still wonder if Marco ever made it and found his mom.
Ninja Kamui I dont remember at all, Cap.
Also, few things were as awesome as kid than seeing this opening every saturday:

God dammit, yes!

Oh God, ok, yes I admit I did watch Angel here and there ...

I liked it because of the song intro, yeah that's it :-)

How about Heidi?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCK57aaSvIk&NR=1

"Abuelito dime tu ..."
"Yudl - Ay - EEE - Ooooo"

Sure you never saw Kamui?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I8809Non8M

Good example of the typical violence they would let us watch on cartoons which I think was never the case in the US.

Nope, no memories of Kamui here...we did get a very brief airing of Space Agent Cobra, until TV authorities realized a show about a guy with a psycho gun for an arm, tattoed naked babes and future baseball being played with ninja stars wasnt exactly kids material.
Oh, and I did watch Heidi, and the Hayao Miyazaki version of Tom Sawyer!
Oh, i'll raise you this three for the Capitan memo Song's love:

Pivotal scene in the next to last chapter:

Last part of final chapter:

Found these a while ago, and just had to watch them. I never got to see the end, not sure if the show was canceled or I just lost interest.

Here's the Japanese Pinocchio series (in Spanish):

This thing was really sad and depressing ...

Do you remember Gobots? It was a ripoff of Transformers.
There was one episode that really traumatised me as a kid, where one of the robots is the victim of a gangrape:

Yikes.

hahaha, Super Agent Cobra.

Yeah in Panama, I don't think they realized this wasn't really appropiate for kids. I do remember that naked lady shower episode, ahaha!

Yeah, that wasnt a bright move, was it?
Although it would have been awesome if the show had aired in the US long enough for some dymb kids to get injured playing Rugball!

Freakazoid is finally coming to DVD. I almost never buy TV series on disc, but this one is a must have. I goddamn loved that show, and I wasn't even a kid at the time. It was just inspired comedy.

You know what I love about stuff like this? Some people think it's hilarious because it's unintentional, but I don't buy it. Those animators absolutely knew what they were doing there, and they got away with it. That makes it even more hilarious to me. It's like Tyler Durden sneaking cock shots into Disney films.

Undoubtedly. Those were dark days at pre-Cartoon Network Hanna-Barbera. That was probably an honest expression of what working everyday on GoBots felt like. A TRANSFORMERS rip-off. That's damn low.
ElCapitanAmerica, Space Adventure Cobra is getting a new anime series for it's 30th anniversary...look for it.

My favorite cartoon is obvious...
1) Grandizer-USA/Ufo Robot Grendizer-Japan- Duke Fleed, on the eve of his wedding to the daughter of Vega The Strong, sees nearly his whole planet destroyed by his formerly future father in law, and escapes to Earth in the Grendizer, a super robot that eventually after 74 episodes saw the earth saved, and Vega defeated.

I also enjoy
Starvengers-USA-/Getter Robo G-Japan
G.I. Joe A Real American Hero
Battle Of The Planets-USA/Gatchaman-Japan
Thundarr the Barbarian
Gaiking-USA/-Japan
Star Blazers-USA/Space Battleship Yamato-Japan
X-Men
Marvel Superheroes
Fantastic Four 67
Spider-Man 67
Mobile Suit Gundam
Robotech
And of course;

Mazinger-Z, this guy was called Tranzor-Z in the US right? Not sure how popular he was here, but this cartoon was super popular in my country.

I believe this was the first cartoon to feature a "strong female lead" with a giant robot that could shoot "breast missiles"

CHRIST...you guys had some fucked up cartoons, Capitan. Although, to be honest, there was this girl in high school that made me think of things like "breast missiles" a lot.

I'm old as dirt, so I remember first run Scooby-Doo, Archies, Josie and the Pussycats, etc. But back in the day no cartoon show could compare to the Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner show. Yeah, it wasn't cartoons done for Saturday mornings. But fuck it. I don't care how great you think your Saturday morning commercials were, they didn't compare to the classic Warner flights of lunacy brought to broadcast (unedited at the time, as I recall) on a weekly basis. The single greatest cartoon show ever. Bugs as Brunehilde trumps all robots everywhere.

They're different.

And I don't know guys, I've been rewatching all my early '90s favs, and most of them are pretty bad (though most of the stuff pictured here is beyond my knowledge). So far Batman's the only one that's still genuinely good. I have a habit of giving just about every new cartoon a chance if it plays while I'm watching TV and I'm of the mind that children's entertainment is at an all time high with quality, nostalgia be damned.
teledork, yes those are classics and we had them too. Bugs Bunny will always be a classic, as well as most of the Hanna/Barbera stuff. Kind of a shame that it is not popular anymore ...

It does seem that the US in the 70s/80s was a bit Japanese cartoon deprived though, you guys missed these classic Mazinger/Transor Z villians like the hermaphrodite half man/half woman Baron Ashler:

Or the "Decapitated Count":

All working for "Dr. Hell", here's the final fate of Dr. Hell, no parachutes jumping out of this one, the count even says "Damn you Mazinger!!!";

Point taken, Cap. About the best I got as a kid was Astro Boy and the daily dose of either Ultraman or Johnny Sokko and his Giant Robot.

Hong Kong Phooey just really couldn't compare, you know? I did catch He-man later on, but by that time I was at the age where I kept thinking of what I'd do to that chick that was with the big blond gay dude.
We had BATTLE OF THE PLANETS/G-FORCE (variants on GATCHAMAN), the mind blowing STAR BLAZERS (SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMOTO, lots of death and I think even a scene suggestive of rape survived in the US edit of that), occasional GIGANTOR reruns, the various incarnations of VOLTRON, SPEED RACER of course, THE MYSTERIOUS CITIES OF GOLD, THE LITTLE PRINCE, the US co-production MIGHTY ORBOTS, some areas had KIMBA THE WHITE LION, the Christian propaganda of SUPERBOOK. Hawaii had a shit-ton of vintage anime from what I understand, way more than we got in the continental US. That's not to even mention the UK, French, and Canadian shows. Not quite deprived, though Miyazaki's FUTURE BOY CONAN would have been awesome - that never made it Stateside that I know of.
Yeah...I remember loving me some Speed Racer. That was definitely one of the faves.

Super Agent Cobra would have fucked my childhood up WAY more than it was.
Kimba the White Lion was a Japanese import too. Although I've run into precious few people my age who remember that one.

This one was called the "Abeja Maya" (Maya the Bee?), not sure if anybody is familiar with it. It's pretty old but it was very popular:

I faintly remember this.

We also had some Japanese stuff that went DTV - the Tezuka/Sanrio coproductions of the UNICO films, Tezuka's SPACE FIREBIRD/PHOENIX 2772. Back well before I was born, ALAKAZAM THE GREAT, a re-edit of SAIYUKI/JOURNEY TO THE WEST went out to theaters courtesy of AIP. This was in 1961 - it surfaced on VHS from Orion, the descendants of AIP, in a pan & scan version. This was before Japanese studios used limited animation (or at least, as limited), so the look is quite different. Plus CinemaScope, which is nice too.

Having cleared up my confusion, I will cast my votes for:

DinoSaucers! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjhJSD8RU4k

Exo-Squad

and Earthworm Jim
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i_4J2t-lG4

he's such a groovy guy

Yeah, it was called "Maya the Bee" in the US, here's the intro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmW_l...eature=related

The monkey in that Alakazam video looks pretty familiar, but I don't think i've seen this animation before ... interesting.

Besides the anime version of Pinocchio, which like I said was very depressing we also had a weird anime of Don Qixote, were he was some type of dog:

I thought about it and realized most of what I was thinking of were actually from the late '80s. The 90s surely were the beginning of good children's entertainment. And I totally forgot aboout Eek the Cat, even though I quote him ALL THE TIME.

"This is my girlfriend Anabell"
"Wow, she's...really...fat..."
"Really?"

and

"Oh Gosh it hurts!"

The Jaws and Apocalypse Now episodes were especially great. Anamaniacs also had an Apocalypse Now episode.
I have to agree. I can't watch G.I. Joe or Transformers or any of that, but Earthworm Jim, Eek!, Freakazoid, Animaniacs . . . all that cracks me up to this day. Maybe it's just the imprint that's made when you're young - something that you can never shake.

But then the reasonable part of me argues against that. There's a lot of crap in the children's TV wasteland - I see this firsthand in my household - and none of it approaches the sublime hilarity of 'Good Idea / Bad Idea.' I think this holds true to classic Loony Tunes, Tom & Jerry, etc. There exists islands of quality in the sea of crap, but damned if you can show me where that island is today.

In addition - perhaps this is too contemporary and really not appropriate to the subject at hand - 'Home Movies' is one of my favourite shows. That's a cartoon that is too good to survive (and alas, it lived but a short time).
I looked up Kimba on Youtube. Look at this clip of the opening and closing credits from the Japanese original and tell me Disney don't got some 'splainin' to do. Note the army of hyenas as the bad guys.

Oh yes, that show was brilliant. I couldn't get H. Jon Benjamin's voice out of my head while that show was running. Coach McGuirk remains one of my favorite comedic characters.

I think I appreciate 'Home Movies' all the more for having only been able to watch it at something like 3 or 4 a.m. I missed the original run entirely.

MYSTERIOUS CITIES OF GOLD intro - I'd forgotten how well-made this show was. The animation quality shits all over what was coming out of Hanna-Barbera and Ruby-Spears, who dominated US TV animation at the time.

Wow that is really awesome. How can I watch this?
