This page shows all the similarities and claims the Lion King was a blatant ripoff:

EDIT - already posted above.

Oh yes, that show was brilliant. I couldn't get H. Jon Benjamin's voice out of my head while that show was running. Coach McGuirk remains one of my favorite comedic characters.
HOME MOVIES kicks ass. I know people who don't like it. I don't get them, I really don't.

If you look around the dollar DVD bin you might find, as I did, LEO THE LION, Tezuka's sequel series to KIMBA. Very abstract, violent, and dark. Awesomely packaged as a LION KING knock-off for maximum psychological damage.

But then the reasonable part of me argues against that. There's a lot of crap in the children's TV wasteland - I see this firsthand in my household - and none of it approaches the sublime hilarity of 'Good Idea / Bad Idea.' I think this holds true to classic Loony Tunes, Tom & Jerry, etc. There exists islands of quality in the sea of crap, but damned if you can show me where that island is today.

In addition - perhaps this is too contemporary and really not appropriate to the subject at hand - 'Home Movies' is one of my favourite shows. That's a cartoon that is too good to survive (and alas, it lived but a short time).
I suppose there's a slant towards 'annoying = funny' in newer kid's shows, but overall I'm often shocked at how funny stuff like Billy and Mandy, Teen Titans, Xaolin Showdown, Johnny Test, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, even Kim Possible is. I also genuinely appriciate the storytelling on shows like the new TMNT. The dialogue still stinks, but the plots are meant for more then selling toys these days.

And Home Movies is my favorite sit-com ever.

I would disassociate with someone who didn't like Home Movies. Fortunately it has yet to happen.

The Kimba thing is a legitimate observation, but I kind of look at it like this: if someone ripped of 'The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers' and made an animated movie about it that was as good as 'The Lion King', I would have a hard time really complaining about it.

Actually, you might very well be right. I'm gonna demand that we watch some of this, instead of Spongebob on the infinite fucking loop. I have only myself to blame.

I've actually seen Foster's Home and liked it quite a bit. I just miss the zany animation styles of Animaniacs and Earthworm Jim, with crazy eyes and exaggerated movements. The anime influence on Teen Titans is the only thing I really have against it.

The TEEN TITANS anime style I find a nice departure from the usual, fairly sterile WB school of human character design. It's not quite anime, but it understands the visual grammar of anime a great deal more than most US attempts. It's not afraid of a multi-episode story arc, either.

I actually agree. You won't catch me slagging on The Lion King. It's probably my favorite Disney animation. I'm okay with borrowing as long as it's done well. And if you're going to steal, you can do a lot worse than to steal from Osamu Tezuka.

Anybody remember Clutch Cargo?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFnLirXjjto

With the freaky super imposed human lips? This show was before my time I think but they would play it on the Canal Zone channel, never saw a translation of it.

US TV animation was such a mess at this time. These remind me of that Incredible Hulk cartoon which I used to call "barely animated" since it looked people moving cardboard cutouts of the characters.

If youre talking "Misterious Cities of Gold", I think Empire gave a raving review to a full series dvd set a few months ago...must be on Amazon.uk or HMV for sale then.

Cap, I have to ask: You've seen the extra feature in "The Incredibles" dvd were they rip that kind of animation a new one? It cracks me up everytime i see it.

It's especially hilarious when you watch it with the audio commentary. It's Craig Nelson and Sam Jackson in character, seeing the show for the first time.

Just to give you some more perspective on my advice I do not like Sponge Bob. Depending on your young one's ages (I'm assuming you have some, correct me if I'm wrong), Teen Titans is actually a nice bridge to the really good stuff like Batman and Justice League.

I wonder why they never released Static Shock or Zeta on DVD, every other Bruce Timm series has several releases already.

Also, here's another one you may have forgotten, Cap (it also aired on Nickelodeon in the US...the hell?):

It took me years to learn this wasnt japanese, but french made. never made it to the ending, and to this day, I hope to score the same drugs the creators of this one regularly consumed.

Sam Jackson's in character reaction to the, er, color palette license the show takes on him pretty much makes that one a must.

Man, I missed that from the Incredibles DVD. Must watch it now!

ryoken, you got me on that one. It looks absolutely crazy, some of these cartoons were pretty weird ...

R2 UK DVD seems to be the way to go. Don't even bother looking at the exchange rates, just pay the £40 and wait for your bank statement so it can be a fun and exciting surprise for you to look forward to.

EDIT - I looked at the exchange rate. Then I wept.

Lets look on the bright side, they DID prepare us for any bad drug/alcohol/food poisoning related "trips" we would take as adults...this from a guy who, when suffreing from hangover headaches, yells "No, princesa andromeda!" sometimes. (yes, that was a "El Galactico" from "Festival de los Robots" reference....pretty much everyone here gets it.

Believe it or not, I watched those awful things with great excitement. That's how desperate we were for superheroes back in the dark ages. You kids today with your blockbuster Batman movies don't know what it was like. We watched our shitty animation, and we were grateful.

Not really, since most girls from my generation sided with the princesss...and there is also the never ending She-ra v/s He-man debate.
Hey Cap you ever watched "Toribio"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGZuN95o-yo

Well, we latin americans thank we grew up with the best of western cartoons and classic anime, before both sides went to creativity/quality hell, as far as children shows is concerned.

Hehe, I guess the TOOK OVER part was too subtle?

Yeah, I'm trolling, get off the lawn, etc., but still. So-called "anime" has led to a sort of fanboy-ism that even Devin couldn't possibly have dreamt of. If there's anything worse than suburban white boys wishing they were gangstas, it's suburban white boys wishing they were ninjas.

Every boy in our class thought the villianess in this show (Ratavari) was the peak of hotness...seriously, she pretty much wore an s&m outfit! No wonder americans thinks we watched crazy stuff as kids.

What about wishing they were Starfleet cadets, browncoats or Jedis? Anime just took over seeds alrady there to begin with. Every hardcore fanboyism is bad in my opinion, but nothing wrong with showing your love for something in a normal, sane way.

I'm old as dirt, so I remember first run Scooby-Doo, Archies, Josie and the Pussycats, etc. But back in the day no cartoon show could compare to the Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner show. Yeah, it wasn't cartoons done for Saturday mornings. But fuck it. I don't care how great you think your Saturday morning commercials were, they didn't compare to the classic Warner flights of lunacy brought to broadcast (unedited at the time, as I recall) on a weekly basis. The single greatest cartoon show ever. Bugs as Brunehilde trumps all robots everywhere.
Just the fact that I feel this should be common knowledge makes me feel ancient. I don't think television has celebrated cartoons quite the same way as they were handled from the late '60s through the '80s. Saturday mornings were a ritual to me, my little brothers and every kid we knew (I was born in '72, by the way). Look, as an adult I have enjoyed some of the vulgarity and violence of today's kid and adult cartoons, but I really think kids born in the late '80s and after have missed out on good wholesome family entertainment. Stuff like Wile E Coyote's face being repeatedly blown off. Tom and Jerry beating the everlovingshit out of each other. All varities of the occult being explored on the old Scooby-Doo shows. Seriously, though, I do miss the fun and simplicity of a lot of the 'classic' stuff. We're gonna have to give in and start paying for Bommerang one of these days so my 5-year-old girl can enjoy some of the same stuff I existed on back when I was her age.

Yeah, we've only rented a couple of the Looney Toons Golden Collection discs (LOVE!) so far. But that's in between Disney movies, Barbie movies (SUCK!), etc that my daughter picks out. It's a good thing Cartoon Network plays old Scooby-Doos at least because that's some of her favorite stuff. I'd love for her to be able to discover all kinds of old goodness just by turning on the tv, though. I need to dig deeper into Netflix now that you mention it to see what else they might have. Hopefully I can find some Felix the Cat, Superfriends, Pink Panther, etc. I was watching some clips of The Electric Company - not all cartoon, I know* - with her yesterday and some of that shit is just insane. I can't believe how wacked out a lot of it seems now.
