Fun flick. As expected, Robert Downey, Jr. is a total riot I couldn't get enough of. Actually, RDJ pretty much steals every scene he's in. Jack Black is fantastic as well - enough to restore my faith in him delivering goods when given the opportunity. In fact, this might be the best comedic work Black has given any
film so far*. But Tom Cruise's hilarious unhinged maniac is undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises of the movie. Cruise is just a blast throughout and I actually wonder if his Les Grossman is enough to turn those who've gone retarded towards him in recent years back around. This is the first I'd seen of Danny McBride's greatness and it sure won't be the last. Ben Stiller has some hysterical moments moments too, but I didn't find him as consistently funny as the other guys I've mentioned here. In closing, Tropic Thunder
doesn't really hold together as well as I might've liked, but its balls-out midbrow/lowbrow humor** won me back so many times that I'm able to forgive whatever faults the film snob side of me wants to call out. Hey SELF: it's a fuckin' comedy
.*...in a live action performance at least. Maybe in anything, but I've yet to see Kung Fu Panda.
**The fake trailers at the beginning are golden, by the way.
P.S. It was cool to finally attend another CHUD gathering and see some faces I hadn't seen in a good while. Appreciate it, Nick, and look forward to doing it again sometime. My two margaritas at Meehans made for an interesting ride home, by the way. That shit snuck up on me by the time I hit the highway.
