THEM!

Watched this one again last night. Great movie.

It's about giant ants, sure, but what tends to get lost is the fact that, despite its place in the rampaging monster genre, THEM is also a very atmospheric flick, probaly the most atmospheric giant monster movie ever. The cinematography and sound editing, especially in the first half hour, are wonderfully atmospheric, almost lewtonesque at times.

If Only harryhausen had done giant ant effects for this flick.

THEM! was originally supposed to be in glorous technicolor and cinemascope...the thought of technicolor green army men firimg orange flames at dark-red giant ants in full 2:35 glory makes me wonder about the movie that could have been...of course, without the B&W and the modest budget, we probably would have lost the subtlety of the first act.

Personally, I think a re-make of this film could really work. It is full of sequences that would make marvelous set-pieces with today's budgets and effects...it would be great to re-make it in 2:35 color and actually set it in the 50's.

I think Guillermo del toro should drop that CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON remake, and develop a THEM! re-make instead...

and even sweeter when screamed by a pigtailed catatonic who's just had a whiff of formic acid.

Amen, Fett! Tarantula has always been my fave of the monster bug movies. Not only the great giant spider and the wicked subplot with the mutating scientist, but also a 5-second appearance by a VERY young Clint Eastwood as one of the fighter pilots. Great movie.

Which one was the swarm of giant locusts? Something like "The Beginning of the End" or something. That one wasn't too bad either...of course I saww it at age 11 on the late night creature feature...

I like Phase IV a lot better than them.

Plus phase IV reflected on the scientist fears of the time with all the pesticide being used.

Further more the movie was probably inspired from "The silent spring" a book published in 1962 by Rachel Carson about the dangers of the overuse of pesticides and the social, economic and environmental balance that must be maintained in sustainable development.

Anyway I liked Phase IV a lot more than them

Cheers peeps!

Clint's cameo is totally unexpected in this. Even when he was a punk kid, he was still laid back as fuck.

You think that's something...check him out in "Revenge of the Creature"! Very un-Clint-like role. wink

Once I saw some old footage (not sure which film) of Clint where he's dressed in a lab coat and trying to act all geeky in front of some professor... Absolutely fucking hilarious.

phase IV? neva hoid of it.

THEM! has a Leonard Nimoy cameo. Is that good enough for you?

although it's not really a cameo because he wasn't famous yet...

That's "Revenge of the Creature"--sequel to Creature from the Black Lagoon and possibly Clint's debut? Or maybe not. Anyway, it is funny.

Here's the idea I've always had for a giant bug movie (technically crustacean in this case). A nuclear spill in the Gulf of Mexico spawning giant crawfish that attack New Orleans during Mardi Gras. It shall be called D'EM!

What do you think, sirs?
