Borderlands - Page 2

Man, Gearbox needs to stop making everyone else look bad. Sweet, spiffy graphics in a very cool style, tons o' guns, 4 player co-op and radically different box art? Slow down, guys. Save something for the next game!
http://chud.com/articles/articles/20...OUT/Page1.html if you can't see it on the official site, since Nachos made me feel bad about not putting up an article!
Dammit, I'm unreasonably hyped for this game to come out already.
That may be the "final" boxart (and I think it is awesome), but I have a hard time seeing it getting all the way to store shelves. If Left 4 Dead 2 has a problem getting chewed off fingers past the censors, how will someone blowing their brains out be treated? If it does make it to shelves like this, awesome. If not, I'll bet they'll have to change the splatter background or something.
Wow, I guess it is official. I did a search for new Borderlands articles in Google News before posting my comment and saw nothing on about it so I assumed it was just a placeholder graphic.

That's pretty cool box art though. And I can't see how you can find it that bad since he's blowing his brains out with a finger gun.
I hope that makes it to shelves just like it is. It's among the coolest covers I've ever seen for a game.
Could Gearbox ditch all the logos and release this as a nice one sheet? It would look great on my wall.
Fuck that's a nice cover.

I really hate how the Kotaku screenshots gallery works when trying to view things at full resolution. Still, interesting looking screenshots and I keep getting more excited for the game.

I will say that I'm surprised the lack of customization of character appearance though. In a 3rd person multiplayer game that seems like something you'd get.

With the lack of customization and the cel-shading, I'm starting to get a little bit of a Crackdown vibe from this one.

Feel free to pelt me with rotten fruit and call me a retard if the Crackdown folks are involved with this and I've just been under a rock for the past year.

It's not 3rd person, it's an FPS.

It does seem odd that there are only four main character models, but I guess they're trying to differentiate between the unique skillsets each of the characters has.
You're right, it's not 3rd person. My bad. But if you're playing co-op then other people will see your character a lot. And you'd think they'd just mix it up a bit more than 4 character models and palette swaps.
Yeah that really sucked in Left 4 Dead!
Why? If it's a class-based game action game, it's better to have instantly recognizable classes than let that get muddled by customization. You want to know who the medic is immediately when bullets are flying at you.
I'm glad that's the only gripe people are having for this game at the moment. Not that we've got much else to go on, but still.

I've heard few murmurs of discontent over unsatisfying shooting controls but I'm waiting for some reviews/a demo before I let my enthusiasm die down.

I'd argue that this is a different type of game though. Since your character levels and you're customizing skills and abilities, it's not like L4D where you're just playing the same scenarios with characters who are unchanged from beginning to end.

Also, as I understand it, this game doesn't require you to have just one of each class ... I think you can do co-op with a couple berzerker guys if you want. So it'd be like having a couple Zoey's running around. I don't think it's a huge deal, it just seemed surprising.

BTW, I found a huge Q&A on it from some of the people who went to Gearbox to give the game a try. The skill trees sound interesting (and the picture below is of them).

Quote:
Can I name my character?
Yes, you’ll be able to name your character.

Can I customize my character’s appearance?
You’ll be able to choose the color of three main sections on your character. This can be done at New-U stations.

How do the Skill Trees work?
We actually hit a goldmine of info here.

Starting at Level 5, you will get a point to put into your skills. If you do the math, that means that by the time you reach the level cap of 50, you will have accumulated 46 total points. Your first point must go into a basic starting ability, which will then unlock the Skill Tree for your character. iLXeNk made this super nice chart to demonstrate this:

Quote:
---- Starting Power ----
Tree 1 - Tree 2 - Tree 3
A - B -- A - B -- A - B
C - D -- C - D -- C - D
E - F -- E - F -- E - F
- G ------ G ------ G -

5 Points in a combination of A/B for each individual tree lets you get to C/D
5 Points in a combination of C/D for each individual tree lets you get to E/F
5 Points in a combination of E/F for each individual tree lets you get to G of that tree
G = Super Power
You can put 5 points in to G
To max out a tree you would have to use 5x7 = 35 with 45 total skills you could completely max out 1 tree and have 10 points. To reach G takes 5x3 / 15. You could take 3 skills or combinations there-of from each tree by the time you're 50 and never once use any of the "Super Powers"

Points start when you hit level 5 (so cap is 50 you get 46 skill points although you HAVE to spend 1 on the starting power so you get 45)
Pretty straightforward. Once you spend that one point on the great big Starting Power, you have a choice of A or B in Trees 1, 2, and 3. Once the amount of points between A and B is five, C and D get unlocked. And so on, until you reach G, which is a very strong ability. As you can see, with only 45 points to use in the trees, this will require the player to think about which areas to improve the character, as maxing everything isn't an option.

Describe some of the characters' other skills and abilities.
Well, we know the most about Roland's skills right now. The turret is his starter skill, which unlocks a tree that starts with upping turret damage, a tree that activites an AOE healing around the turret, and his Medic tree. A skill halfway down the Medic tree gave him the ability to heal teammates by shooting them, so this often talked-about ability must be worked toward. The earliest skills in the Medic tree included a personal health regeneration, and a bonus to overall health. The effectiveness or total bonuses of both were decided by how many points were put into them. Healing bullets add a percentage of the damage they would normally cause to an enemy to the target's health; this percentage can be increased by adding more points and heal your teammates quicker and with less ammo.

There might be a mix-up in there, maybe a skill or two listed under the wrong tree, but you get the idea.

Can I go back and add points into previous skills if I don’t like the way I progressed?
Yes, for a fee at a New-U station or shop, you can pay money to re-spec your character.

This is incredible- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJn7QIT-fcQ

First of many, apparently.
I've heard that the missions for this are repetitive as sin, but these videos - especially the funky trailer are winning me around.

Damn.
Haha, that is great. I love the way it starts with the fake, "Oh, I didn't see you there."

I don't think I'd really mind repetitive missions too much if I can collect loot, level up, and get new abilities as I play with friends (see: Resistance 2 co-op).

Unfortunately this is competing with Uncharted 2 which will obviously be getting first billing. And since it has co-op, I'm sure I'll be playing that first.
Agreed.

It's a definite pickup at some point though unless Alex says it raped him.

I hope that comment on enemies having different skins and designs is true. I've heard the same stories about repetitive missions, however I've heard that there are numerous ways to complete your objectives which might make it a bit better and hell I enjoyed the 'repetitive' missions of Red Faction so its all good

Still barring bad reviews from legitimate places (ie Eurogamer, GamesTM) I'm getting this launch day just for the co-op
post #74 of 1026
Seems like a really early purchase for me. And from what I've heard so far both the shooting and the visuals are way better on the PC which is another big plus for me. I didn't buy that GTX 285 for WOW, after all.

Balebot...awesome.
Also, i would pay good money for a "Not without my toaster!" film.
Game pre-ordered...god, it looks gorgeous in motion.
Oh man, that video was amazing, not-so-subtle nods to the Bale incident and all. Both the Steve gags were great, "Hiyoooo!" *BANG BANG BANG*

One can only hope he's an actual character in the game.

I can't wait to get some 4 player COOP going on this.
Character trailer's almost as good- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_Vij...e=channel_page

They're really knocking it out of the park with the marketing, hope the game's up to snuff.

Brick as Himself.

Brick holds rocket launchers/bazookas under his large arm.

Brick punches heads into mess.

Brick is love.

Holy shit, this game.

Put in a few trades and preordered this last night.. just 34 more sleeps!

Here's a sentence from the IGN preview that got me excited: "Following the Medic skill branch gets you additional healing skills where your turret has a chance to revive allies and where your friendly fire can restore their hit points."

Healing with bullets? Awesome!

This is easily the game I'm most looking forward to this year. I was planning on playing as the Hunter but the idea of using turrets as a soldier gives me TF2 flashbacks so I'm gonna have to go with that.

That's basically the way the medic worked in Resistance 2. The medic gun had a beam that would suck health from enemies when aimed at them and give health to teammates when aimed on them (and an alternate fire of an area affect health burst). It was a pretty good system.
Also, he has three balls.

Borderlands preview video off of Gametrailers.

Mmmmm, guns.

Had to put the latest Claptrap episode up on the main page- http://chud.com/articles/articles/20...IVE/Page1.html
post #87 of 1026
I wanted this game before but after that second Claptrap video I must own it day of release. "So who's Tony Romo now muthafucka! Uprights!"
Yeah, that came out of nowhere and was pretty hilarious.

So it's getting a little disconcerting that there aren't any early positive reviews of this game going out yet. In fact, I haven't heard much at all about it lately.

However, with the Skill Trees now available for browsing, my interest in the game has renewed a bit.

It's still over a week away from release, I doubt you'll get reviews coming in until the weekend.
I guess it's just seemed that lately there have been 1 or 2 reviews that come out a week or two early for most decent games but the silence here has been a bit suspicious.

Brutal Legends reviews were out yesterday, most games tend to get reviews the day before. It's only games like Halo: ODST and Uncharted and GTA that get early reviews and that's because theirs an incentive for journalists to be the first on the scene with those reviews.
I didn't know that this was so close to release. I can't wait - and thanks for the link to the Skill Trees! It's a toss-up between Mordecai (the sniper with the pet eagle) and Roland (the guy who you can restore your team's health with the healing power of bullets).
OXM, US version, reviewed the game in their latest issue. Scored an 8.5 out of 10.

Their summary:

+ Gigantic game packed with weapons, loot, and quests
+ Ferociously over-the-top combat
- Enemy spawning and co-op should be better implemented
? Would it have been that hard to build in save-anywhere and difficulty levels?

This is looking like a game right up my alley, but with my current backlog, I don't see getting it right away. It'll probably be on sale soon enough, though.
Also, for anyone awesome enough to have 3 friends and a decent computer, there's a Steam 4 Pack of Borderlands that drops the price to about 37 bucks a copy.
I went into my local Best Buy to get Uncharted 2 and imagine my surprise when I saw this sitting on the shelves. I can't wait to start playing this tomorrow.
NICE. Keep us posted.
Giant Bomb put up a fun Quick Look of the game.

A little 4 player co-op, "Alright, drop it," a power outage...good times.

It looks a lot like a FPS MMO. Or L4D with no zombies and lots of loot. I have no problems with that, but I can understand how this would be hell to some people.

So far it seems a lot like what I wanted Hellgate: London to be.
The Giant Bomb quick look has me extremely excited. I was planning on putting it off for a bit, but now my best friend and I are already planning our co-op schedule.
