Criterion's hints

My favorite part of their newsletter. Anyone else love trying to guess their hints? This one's impossible if you haven't seen the film:

I'm so bad at these. I don't think I've ever guessed one right.

But they are great.
This is my guess (don't click if you want to figure it out for yourself)

Yep. Well done.
Yeah, no chance it's not that. Not really point in anyone else guessing.
At least, Sirk's best is coming out. Fuck, I'm still waiting on White Dog.

Discreet Charm of the Bourgeois re-release? I don't own the original copy but if I remember right it was pretty stacked as it was. And anamorphic too. It might be Blu-Ray. Or just a different movie all together. Exterminating Angel was a guess my friend had, but I haven't seen that.
Your friend is right.
That movie needs a new release, too. The copy I saw had the same problem of all Bunuel's black and whites: badly translated subtitles, that are white, and often fade into the white behind them. They need to do a good copy of Simon of the Desert also.

White Dog hits in December. One of Fuller's last and greatest.

I can't figure out the new one.

What kind of flower is that?

The scimitar makes me think Thief of Baghdad or a Sinbad movie.

The jpg calls it a tulip.
It's a tulip, I do believe.

eta: bah, I didn't need to use no properties. I know my flowers!
Probably a pirate movie.

Already out.

It's most likely this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044602/
post #17 of 152
I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. All this really made me think is that Criterion should put out more pirate movies.
This hint was actually from a few months ago. Obviously its no longer coming out in November. Was it in their most recent newsletter as well?

Might have been from July.
Fanfan got bumped. Just like a couple of the Blu-Rays. El Norte is still coming though.
I actually was so excited by today's hint, I made phone calls to inform friends about it.

Criterion is releasing Friends of Eddie Coyle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I missed that.

But, I saw Hobson's Choice finally getting a Region 1 release. Sweet.

Fanfan is the latest one I picked up. I love it. Never saw it before.

Instead of starting another Criterion release thread, I decided to dig this one up...

Apparently, one of Kurosawa's long sought after films Dodes Ka Den is finally being released on DVD March 17, 2009.

Yeah, that's the film that caused Kurosawa to attempt suicide.

Because it was a commercial failure, or was there more to it than that?

Well, he was in a deep depression at the time. Personally, I think a lot of the public backlash got to him. At the time, the Japanese press seemed to just love talking about how Kurosawa was having trouble getting his films off the ground.
Well crap...I posted this in the wrong place before...but did anyone read Criterion's newsletter today?

Am I correct in guessing Cronos will be getting released by Criterion in the fall?

It's Cronos on DVD and Blu-Ray for October.

Very cool. I tried watching an old VHS copy with my roomates in college, but I couldn't really get into it due to the viewing circumstances at the time. I guess it's not exactly an easy movie to sit around and watch with four college-aged fraternity guys. I'll be glad to revisit it on Criterion - sober.

Anderson, do you have a hookup with Criterion?

Those wonderful bastards at Criterion visited the George Eastman house and dropped a few awesome chestnuts -- http://ow.ly/MPEn

Last Friday, Fumiko, Issa, and I went up to Rochester, New York, to the Eastman House. We have been talking to them about accessing their archive on a more regular basis, starting with the three Von Sternberg films that are coming up. It’s really an interesting place, and we got to see some pretty cool things that we thought we’d share with you . . . —Lee Kline

The vaults are pretty endless, but incredibly well organized. Fumiko stands next to one of the hundreds of very long rows of 35 mm prints that the archive contains.
Then they dropped a photo of some of the sheet music from Von Sternberg's UNDERWORLD.

UNDERWORLD. Holy shit. This is awesome.

Maybe a Von Sternberg Eclipse is coming?
Fuck. Criterion has made a sport of wallet-rape.

I still have no idea what happened with that. Possible it got bumped to 2010. They've still got Following and Y Tu Mama Tambien on top for 2010.

I used to have a list of films they've got claim to for the upcoming year. I'll have to dig for it.
What Criterion can release in 2010 (unless legal rights or other shit craps up)

Stagecoach
Underworld
Gray's Anatomy (Soderbergh)
The Shooting
Mystery Train
Ride with the Devil
The French Lieutenant's Woman
Following
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Kapo
Lili Marleen
Cronos

There's more films, but there's various issues tied to all of this. It seems that they lost the rights to Love Streams. Plus, I've heard rumors of an issue with the transfer on Brakhage Anthology II. I don't know anything else on that. Always looking for more info.
Based on the restored prints going around, I'd expect the Sternberg box set to be completely silent era, so: Underworld, The Last Command, and The Docks of New York. Really excited about that last one.

Also, we should definitely expect a blu-ray version of The Red Shoes, if that gorgeous new 35mm print is any indication.

Hope they didn't take any pregnant women with them.

Gah... I'd kill to take a tour of the archives. I once worked with a guy who was good friends with one of the archivists. I never pressed him on it, though it looks like I should have.

Take a good look at this image, fellow DVD nerds:

Because it pretty much drops a lot of hints. Most notably THE RED SHOES, which a lot of people (myself included) were waiting for, and THE LEOPARD. On Blu. That makes me ridiculously happy.

Here's the link with replies as guesses: http://www.criterion.com/current/posts/1342

Pisses me off that I bought M on DVD finally, only to see a Blu-Ray release coming.

Anyone crack this yet? I've got nothing.
Oshima's Eclipse release probably.
Could we be getting Wenders' PARIS, TEXAS?

If so, yay!
Paris, Texas streets January 26th.
On their site it says Janus is showing prints of House. I remember Devin excitedly talking up this crazy sounding flick on one of the main page lists. Any chance of this getting a DVD release (possibly Eclipse) this year?
Yes.
Holy shit, Bigger Than Life on March 23!
I'm excited for this one, I bet it will look gorgeous.
I might have to make The Fugitive Kind my first Criterion purchase. What a great film.
Ride with the Devil and The Fugitive Kind.

Now, if they would just get around to Cronos and the others.

Tax money get here soon.

EDIT: This stinks of Studio Canal selling rights to LionsGate.
