Criterion's hints - Page 2

Yeah, I'm jumping on Pierrot Le Fou and Grand Illusion (at the very least) ASAP.
That's disappointing because of a lot of the titles included in that sale.

If this be the case, then my days of not having a BD player are coming to an end.
There's box art floating around for Night Train to Munich. It's supposed to be a June release.
I don't want to make this the official Criterion Catch-All Thread, but we ain't got one so there. ANYWAY:

FULLY FUCKING RESTORED VERSION OF STAGECOACH AND M IN HD!!!!!
Stagecoach has been a long time coming. There's a screening of the restored print coming up soon. It's some sort of Criterion double header that they're doing with Young Mr. Lincoln.
Honestly, as fucking spectacular as STAGECOACH is, is there a larger picture here? Is Criterion getting in bed with the WB?, because I might just lose it if so.
Probably not. Stagecoach's distribution rights are owned by the UCLA Film and Television Archives. Warner Bros licensed it from them, but weren't given access to the restored print that Criterion is apparently using. WB lost the rights to it, and all of their Stagecoach releases are now out of print.

The Thin Red Line in bluray!! Awesome!
Between this and the Tron trailer, it's a good week for my boners.
Popped over here after listing my Days of Heaven criterion dvd on ebay after having just found out about the new blu ray release criterion is putting out. If I was trying to contain my excitement before, hearing about a possible criterion blu ray of the Thin Red Line is sending me through the roof. Fingers crossed we're getting an extended cut.
It's not really a hint, because they fucking announced it (along with RED DESERT and MYSTERY TRAIN and NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH) ... but still. you know?!?!

So, so great.
Got the newsletter for this month, and I believe ANTICHRIST is coming via Criterion. Anyone else think that's the hint?

If that's the case, I'll be all over that.

It is. They also posted a blurry picture of a screening they were having of an unnamed film that was AntiChrist.

So excited for July to roll around. I'm still waiting for The Red Shoes to roll around to our Cinematheque.
I haven't had the pleasure of seeing it yet.
Well, that made my whole year.
Fish Tank will be coming from Criterion at some point.
And the NYTimes pretty much confirms it - Criterion continues to knock it out of the stratosphere this year:

Quote:
Criterion continues its season of releases on Aug. 10 with a collection of Josef von Sternberg silents, including “The Last Command” and “Underworld.”
I believe DOCKS OF NEW YORK is the third title.
Whoops. Also confirmed by the NYT - HAUSU. 9/7.

Playlist nation has the alleged cover art. I can't help but wonder if it's fake - I'm partial to just an orange cover with Blanche on it.
AWESOME!
WHOA.

That's... unexpected. But awesome, if true.
I may have to try hallucinogens one last time if I can get my hands on a copy of Hausu.
DVD Beaver and Amazon seem to have a list of the next batch: THE THIN RED LINE, SEVEN SAMURAI, VIDEODROME, ANTI CHRIST and THE DARJEELING LIMITED.
Yeah, my wife might kill me but I want to grab all of those.

My wallet just started bleeding reading that.
I knew it was coming, but part of me blanches at the fact that Criterion will be getting my SEVEN SAMURAI money for a third time.
Is that a re-release of Videodrome, or a Blu-ray release? I already have the awesome Betamax looking 2 disc set, and if this is a Blu-ray, I'll definitely be picking it up. Never seen The Thin Red Line, but I've heard enough good words about it to make it a blind buy.
It's Blu-Ray.
F yeah! From this weeks newsletter ---

Quote:
Some exciting news for Charlie Chaplin fans (and who doesn’t that include?): Janus Films has acquired the rights to the Chaplin catalogue and will start rolling the films out, all in new 35 mm prints, for a traveling theatrical retrospective this summer. The series, called Chaplin, will start July 16 at New York’s Film Forum with a weeklong run of the 1928 comedy The Circus. Other films screening will include, naturally, The Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, Limelight, and A King in New York, plus a wealth of classic comic shorts.
Not hints anymore, but what the hell:

VON STERNBERG on 8/24 (UNDERWORLD, DOCKS OF NY, and LAST COMMAND)

BLACK ORPHEUS on 8/17 (also on Blu too)

LOUIE BLUIE & CRUMB both on 8/10 (CRUMB is also going Blu)

There's also L'ENFANCE NUE on 8/17
Damn. That's a great line-up.
Criterion let it drop yesterday that another batch of titles would be going out of print effective June 30th, get them while you can.

Billy Liar
Bob le flambeur
Diary of A Chambermaid
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The Man Who Fell to Earth (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
The Milky Way
The Phantom of Liberty
That Obscure Object of Desire
Touchez pas au grisbi
A Woman Is a Woman
I wonder who the Bunuel rights are reverting to.
The same company that will only release about three of the titles in Region 1 and then sit on the rest.
aka Lionsgate. I have no idea why Lionsgate wants most of these titles.
What is nice is that Criterion let it slip that they're releasing Something Wild in the Fall.

I love the Demme.
EDIT: NVM I found it
Night of the Hunter on Blu-Ray is the latest hint.
Yeah, that's a must-own.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is also coming out in September.

Any word on the rumored ANTICHRIST Criterion? I'm also hoping they do a RED RIDING package via their IFC partnership.

And that Red Shoes reissue, is that going to be a two-discer or just the old features with the restoration?

Unfortunately they're not. It's being released through MPI on 8-17-10, and it's already available for pre-order on amazon for a pretty reasonable price:

Red Riding trilogy blu-ray

No "official" announcement on Antichrist, it is coming just no word on when, most likely in October., as they said fall.

Red Shoes DVD will be a 2 Disc while the Blu will be one as usual. The Special features:

* New high-definition master from the award-winning 2009 digital restoration (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
* Introductory restoration demonstration with filmmaker Martin Scorsese
* Audio commentary by film historian Ian Christie, featuring interviews with stars Marius Goring and Moira Shearer, cinematographer Jack Cardiff, composer Brian Easdale, and Scorsese
* Profile of “The Red Shoes,” a documentary on the making of the film, featuring interviews with members of the production team
* Video interview with director Michael Powell’s widow, Thelma Schoonmaker Powell, from the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, in which she discusses Powell, the film, and the restoration
* Audio recording of actor Jeremy Irons reading excerpts from Powell and Pressburger’s novelization of The Red Shoes
* Collection of rare publicity stills and behind-the-scenes photos
* Gallery of items from Scorsese’s personal collection of The Red Shoes memorabilia
* The “Red Shoes” Sketches, an animated film of Hein Heckroth’s painted storyboards, with the Red Shoes ballet as an alternate angle
* Audio recording of Irons reading the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Red Shoes”
* Theatrical trailer
* PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic David Ehrenstein and a description of the restoration by UCLA film archivist Robert Gitt
post #94 of 152
oh my fucking god night of the hunter blu ray - To make this more content-y, I really hope that Hausu disc ends up with different cover art. Would be a very rare case of Criterion dropping the ball on that front.
Man, I'm pissed about that Red Riding set but the features on the Red Shoes (which has become one of my favorite movies evar since I saw it on the big screen) make up for it.

And since I'll be that guy, I just want to say I was ripshit pissed when I read this interview with Joe Dante where he revealed he had a ton of stuff for a Matinee Criterion, but nobody would play ball.

It must sting a little when a guy like Dante wants to get on the label and can't, all while the imprint carries Kevin Smith and Michael Bay movies.
Well, as Dante pointed out in that interview, Matinee was basically an indie that Universal picked up, so the rights to it are complicated.

Isn't that what Dazed and Confused was?
I thought Dazed & Confused was produced by Universal. I know the casting director and producer were Uni's in-house guys for a while -- one of them had done Fast Times at Ridgemont High, I think the same producer did both it and Mallrats. But I could be wrong.

Maybe? But Criterion has lots of films in their catalog with probably "complicated" rights. I just imagine they're not too interested in Matinee.
