And if you do accept that as an excuse, then I would offer that dealing with the mental stress of dealing with a spouse going through cancer treatment and the physical toll it no doubt had on their marriage is just as good an excuse for Edwards straying.

Not necessarily. But the fact remains that if cheating on your wife proves that you are too untrustworthy to be president, then it doesn't matter. If the stress was such that it made him unfit as a husband, then it made him unfit to be president. I mean, if that's the metric we're using.
Me, I think marriage is such a complicated and personal relationship that I try not to use it to judge a person's entire life. It's not a mark in McCain's favor in my book, but it doesn't disqualify him from being president. Same would go for Edwards, but as he's already out it doesn't really matter.
