Call of Duty: World at War

Thread Starter
Didn't see a thread (unless there is one and search didn't find it) for this.

IGN.com has a trailer up: http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/142220...aw_reveal.html

I've enjoyed the COD franchise over the years. I've played the first one, COD 2 and COD: Modern Warfare. The latter being intense as hell. But this looks amazing. It's scheduled release date is Nov. 11, 2008. With this and C&C Red Alert 3 coming out, I know how my winter will be spent!
It uses the same engine at 4 but it's the developers from 3. That gameplay footage makes the flamethrower look awesome - the hand-to-hand rushes look intense, but reminds me how tired that era is in the genre.

They need to set this apart from the crowd. True, it needs to look good - so give us bloody 1080p - native 1080p this time around. Proper game invite system. Ditch prestige, if you're going to put in 500+ ranks, do it properly. Allow community maps, skins and character customisation. Actually have some clan features - allowances for clan matches, leagues etc. Fix every problem that Infinity Ward couldn't be bothered to fix.

Then, Treyarch, we'll talk. Until then - Call of Duty 3? Remember that? No, neither do I.

Sorry I sound angry - but that fucker was a disaster and this whole thing seems rushed.

Beta for XBOX 360 and PC coming in October:

Quote:
In October, Activision will be holding public multiplayer betas for the Xbox 360 and PC editions of Call of Duty: World at War. Those wishing to participate can register at the official Call of Duty site or preorder the game, which will include a token for beta access.

Since it's not the original developers, I'll skip his shit and wait for the next one, developed by the real team. I'll entertain myself with some Spore and RA3.

And it's good. So much better than Tiberium Wars. October can't get there soon enough.
Oh, hey, look! It's a WW2 FPS! We certainly need another one of those. I hear there's an obscure part of Guam that hasn't been displayed in glorious bling-mapping yet. Or something. So, there ya go!
If this keeps up we're going to get Call Of Duty: Tarawa Day 2 and Medal Of Honor: The Battle For The Kharkov Train Station. Give it a rest please.
Can we at least get [FPS] World War I?

Oh wait, I'll just play CoD4 because there are times when COD4 > sex. Not many, but damn I love that game.
Every time I hear an announcement for a World War II game I hope that it’s a belated sequel to the brutally underrated Sniper Elite. Such a brilliant, brilliant game that seemed to get completely lost last generation.

I can understand the appeal of World War II to developers, it’s probably the last war which was clearly cut as a battle between good and bad. There’s no need to have shades of grey when you’re dealing with the Nazi’s and those crazy, crazy, harikari happy Japanese.

How would an FPS World War 1 game work exactly? Just spend the majority of the playtime in a trench playing Quick Time Events to stave off trench foot.
I'm sure there'd be moments where you have to put your gas mask on in five seconds or suffer a horrible, brutal death. Speaking of which, the death scenes would be way more horrific.

That was just on the western front. In other fronts all kinds of cool shit was going down. You could be a Boer scout fighting against the Germans in the jungles of East Africa. Or an Australian cavalryman operating alongside the Arabs against the Ottomans in the Middle East.

Wasn't Sniper Elite a Rebellion (of AvP fame) title? If not, my apologies but I swear I played it. That fucker was pretty tough. Tense too.
Yes it was a Rebellion game and yes it was hard as all fuck. But it was worth it to see Nazi skulls pop like grapes in glorious slow motion.
It was indeed glorious. A next-gen version of this would be welcome - especially in natural settings (SE's town-settings were terrible). You could have a fucking battle going on around you that would tear you apart if you tried to play it run n gun - and you have a single target who needs to go down. Some higher-ranking enemy guy. Nothing but a compass, a map and a rifle for the hardest difficulty setting.

Basically CoD4's Chernobyl mission as an entire game. Sign me up!
Treyarch = no thanks

CoD4 has a Chernobyl mission? Damn, I need to play the single player.

All my friends who own 360s and PS3s have basically had them almost solely as CoD4 multiplayer machines since the game was released. Barely any other games get any play time.
Back to WWII with an inferior developer? No thanks. No red dot sites, no airstrikes, no choppers? Again, no thanks. I'm sure it will be a decent game, but after Call of Duty 4 it's all a big step backwards. Easily the best of the popular current-gen FPS multiplayer games(yes, TF2 is great). I've still yet to tire of it.

It technically has two. One of them (the assassination and escape) is still the only mission I haven't beaten on Veteran so if that's the one that all of Sniper Elite is being compared to I'll be glad I missed it.
No, I was just saying it'd be great to have a next-gen Sniper Elite styled on those missions. Sniper Elite isn't quite as taxing as Veteran CoD4 Chernobyl.

I just wish it was. I want a fucking hard game for my collection so I don't finish it before i've even bought it.

Imagine the achievements and trophies they could make for it...
There's hard and there's ridiculous. COD4 Chernobyl was ridiculous. I don't have the time or the inclination to play the same 3 minute stretch of gameplay for an hour just so I can beat it.
The wait for the pickup was ridiculous. The rest of the mission was sublime. An entire game of it would probably entail a lot of patience and planning, much like the original Commandos games.
Multiplayer beta keys for this went out today. I don't know what to make of it -- it's basically just a reskinned Call of Duty 4. The only exceptional differences are controllable vehicles, and instead of getting a patrol helicopter as a bonus for kill streaks, you can now call in a pack of vicious hounds to run around the map, biting opponents' throats.

Even so, if anyone else in here has the beta, I'd love to get some games going.

Okay, I was skeptical... but that sounds great. All I can think of is the monkeys from that Timesplitters 2 mode, but scary.
How are you guys getting the betas?

If they get ahold of you can you still break their necks?

Hopefully i will get beta access. I just signed up and did the account transfer from charlieocardelta.com. Now i guess i just wait?

You forgot to mention that the "reskin" looks like poo. The animations on the people look like kentucky fried ass. Other than that, yeah, just like Call of Duty 4. I'm Daddy316 on XBL, shoot me an invite.

The dogs are however supremely fucking awesome. If you follow them, they'll lead you to enemies who are "camping."

Either Gamstop pre-order or you have an account on callofduty.com.

Nah, they didn't include the actual attack animation from COD4, for some reason. If the dogs attack you then it's pretty much a one-hit kill.

I didn't notice any problems with the animation, truth be told, but I haven't been looking too closely. All of the added gore definitely took me by surprise, though.

Sent an invite, I'll probably be on later tonight.
It certainly looks like CoD3.

Fortunately, it plays like CoD4.

Problem is, i've already got a CoD4.

Saying that, it's very playable.

EDIT: Played it on the 360, didn't notice any graphical problems, just didn't look massively polished.
If it aint broke, dont fix it?

Level design seems nice. Alot good mixture of off-beaten paths and bottle-necked warzones. The dog thing is a pain in the ass though.
I actually like the dogs. Nice way to flush out your enemies, and it's scary hearing them coming after you.

But yeah, it's just as fun as COD4. Like the levels, although I wish there was some more jungle action.
Aint broke don't fix it only applies when you're not having to buy something new.

Since my copy of CoD4 isn't broke, I shouldn't technically replace it with a reskin.

However, the little i've seen does say there might be more than that. I see there being worse server problems this time around though, on all formats.
As long as Treyarch kept the COD4 feel for this game and also brought back Joel Goldsmith for the score... I'm in.

That last level in COD3 had the most epic music in a game ever.
Meh. I think i've promised Spike a game that Treyarch can't deliver.

I'll wait to pass judgement on the final product, but i'm getting all maudlin regarding major releases - and i've got a horrible feeling i'm getting that way regarding LBP too.

I need something that has no hype attached to it to play.
Is that Kiefer Sutherland doing the voice over in the Makin level?

Love the "war drums" in the war mode when you have the "triple capture speed" going.
The Roundhouse map seems pretty cool in a "Enemy at the Gates" kinda way. Too bad every team I play against on the map knows a glitch that takes them underneath the damn thing for cheap kills. The game's not too bad but looks like COD2.

Yes.

Beta impressions- http://chud.com/articles/articles/16...ONS/Page1.html

Love that they raised the level cap... too bad you can't see some of the cooler new weapons, though... like the flamethrower.
O.k. Gametrailers has a video up about the newest released info on this game. Beat the single player and you unlock a four person co-op game where you fight waves of Nazi Zombies. ZOMBIES. This game just went from a rental to a must buy for me. ZOMBIES!!!
Or you could, y'know, buy Left 4 Dead or Saints Row 2 or GTA IV or whatever fucking game seems to be jumping on the bandwagon.

Had GTA IV, could care less about it. Saints Row isn't an FPS and I haven't seen enough out of Left 4 Dead to get me excited. Excuse the fuck out of me for having, y'know, an opinion.
Well it's an opinion that is flat out wrong. It just feels like an utterly cynical move and when it's being released a few weeks after Valve's Zombie Survival FPS it seems a little odd. But go ahead and get excited about mediocrity.
If Treyarch had added a "dress up like a pirate" mod, Marshall would be prancing with delight all over this thread.

It's just an unlockable bonus. It sounds more fun than slogging through another WWII campaign, though.
But that's all it is, a bonus. It'll probably last for about five minutes and get forgotten about again. It seems like Treyarch is just desperate to get people to love their new game. 'What they don't like World War 2....oh shit...what do geeks like, ZOMBIES!!....hey lets reskin this Team King map and call it an all new feature'

Don't you mock being able to dress up like pirates, it's truly a wondrous thing to murder people in comedy outfits. You just have to get over your own macho bullshit to appreciate it though.

Did you fall out of a fucking tree and land on your head or something? Seriously. People have been playing made up "zombie" game types since Call of Duty 2 so what's wrong with adding this to the game? Because someone else is doing something with zombies? That's a really shitty argument.

I seriously don't care what you think of the move but you don't have to be an asshole about it.

I don't think I've ever seen somebody get so worked up about bonus content.
So is the Wii version gonna get any love? I'm just impressed that they managed to fit the CoD4 engine on the console of my choice, but I suspect that this game will dominate on the 360 and PS3.
Apparently the Wii version has worryingly good controls. Responsive, intuitive etc.

They also say it the newly tooled engine looks less offensive in a lower definition, due to the poorer texturing and animations this time around on all versions of CoD4 - so might be a matter of putting grease on the lens just to improve the experience.
I have a PC Beta code. If anyone wants it just PM.
They must have just started to hand these out. I have a PC code as well.

I need a X360 code. If anyone wants it let me know.
