Project Runway - Season 5

Matchstick, holla at your boy!

Korto, Kelli, and Kenley are the big stand outs to me. 'Tanning Bed' Blane and Stella 'I do leatha' are the best characters. Everyone else is just background filler.
Random thoughts:

Korto actually smiled last ep! I like the girl that looks like Cat Power, but just because of the one skirt she designed. Everyone is trying way too hard to be Christian, so it annoys. I can't stand that Joe guy because he threw a fit about the re-threading and I disliked the obviousness of his last design. Don't like Stella and her creepy leggings. I LOVE Daniel's model. Portman looked pretty tiny next to Klum.

Oh, and my absolute favortie thing about the show is how Tim Gunn creeps into the studio (the exact same way every time) to check on the designers' progress.

Tim Gunn IS this show.

She does look like Cat Power! That chick has some good ideas, but she isn't mature enough to edit. She'll hang in the middle until the pack of designers is small enough for her to get squeezed out.

Also, Suede talking in 3rd person. Is he for real? Just awful.
It's terrible, but at least he doesn't seem like a dick. Plus, one time he started talking in first person. He broke his sad, contrived character without realizing it! One of my favorite moments of this season. The most interesting contestant so far is the guy from Utah that seems to be sabotaging the other designers. Now that is some real drama.

She looks like Cat Power and they have they share the same last name - Marshall!

Nice catch. I missed Suede breaking character. It seemed too out there to be genuine, though.

Yeah, that Utah guy needs more screen time. He likes to play the pity card, but he's no Wendy Pepper.
I'll be honest, Diva - I didn't want to see the girl with the awesome arm tattoo go. I thought it was pretty poor of the judges to rip into her "taste level" when they actually awarded her a win just a few shows ago. Still, that outfit was pretty bad. But the guy she was partnered with (whatever his name is) seems to have the least amount of talent of the group. Would have liked to see him go, but I guess they want to keep him around to see how he'll act around Kenley now that she laughed her ass off at him on the runway. That had to be one of the weirdest moments of that show, by the way. Anyway, I thought that they gave the wrong outfit the win - the judges seemed to have their minds made up in favor of Jarrell, but Brooke was all about that other outfit.

Just caught up. Agreed on all points. At least Dan is finally out (in more ways than one)*. He hasn't had one good outfit yet. I also can't believe Keith(?) is still in. Apparently all he can do is swatches. His drag outfit was quite the drag. It looked like he put no thought into it at all.

Teri seems to be getting the shaft. He kabuki outfit was all sorts of awesome. Korto's look was hot though. Joe's outfit only worked because his model sold it so well. I can't believe he won. It was nice to see Chris. His laughter really is infectious.

And ever since you called out Suede for dropping his third person stchick, I've noticed he's been doing it more and more.

*The gossip sites have confirmed that Dan and Wesley are an item. What a bizarre couple. Wesley is such a stick in the mud. But Dan kinda is too.

Yet another show I bring nothing to the table on.
Dan was weird on that show. He was always talking about his "taste level", but he never had anything interesting to present. I felt bad for him during his exit, though - he had to console the evil Keith. I can't stand Joe, but his outfit was pretty out(fit)standing. And, in an interesting turn of events, he actually listened to the input from his model and incorporated it. Most of the designers go on and on about their vision and never listen to anyone but themselves, it seems. They don't even listen to Tim Gunn -and that's fucked up.

It was good to see Chris again, but it sucks that they didn't use him as a judge.

Then why even post in the thread?

If all you've got to say about a subject is that you are not interested and have nothing to say about it... why post?
I dunno, just showing an opinion. It's not even a bait. Although I admit to at least knowing what "Hot Mess" was.
I think Diva and I are pretty much the only ones that watch it around these parts. See Diva's initial post here - she knows her audience. It's pretty much impossible to convince people that it's worth watching. It's a blast seeing these folks create amazing outfits (and sometimes terrible clothes) from nothing in a small window of time. Plus, Tim Gunn is the shit. I wish he was my friend.
It's not an issue of not liking the show. I'm just indifferent. (Not to say what's being created isn't damn impressive. But my tv isn't hooked up and I'm not gonna watch this stuff on dvd) I think my siblings watch it though. *shrug*

Yeah, I like that Joe is growing every week. I think I've outgrown Kenley though. She does exactly what you are talking about. Every one of her outfits looks like something that she would wear.

I think Chris couldn't judge because he was too close to the models. It would be a conflict of interest. I like that he made the rounds with Tim, though. He knows more than Tim what works and what doesn't for a drag show. It's too bad, as you pointed out, that many of models didn't listen to him.

I'm a fan too Justin. And didn't Tim get his own show this season?

Yeah, of all the reality shows, this one actually showcases talent and not contestants who are just put on for ratings. They have to design and create amazing outfits out of diverse materials for various clients in a small amount of time (often less than a full day). While cooking shows are similar to a degree, they are hard for me to get into because I can't taste the food.

I like that the judges don't sugar coat their comments and actually give constructive criticism. I feel like the contestants and the viewers are learning useful information. Also if you don't love Tim Gunn, well, I just don't know what to say. He is the heart of the show, truly caring about each contestant and genuinely wanting them to do well.

I love this show.

Man, did he? I'm aware of not much else on that network. Awesome that you're a fan, Tati.

Kenley's one saving grace is that she's cute. She's kind of annoying, her outfits haven't been great, but I root for her because she is pretty.

It is terrible, and I am ashamed.

It's called Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. It doesn't look appealing. From the bits I've seen, it's just another generic make over show.

Everyone's got their faults Matchstick.

Well not quite new. The date on the article you linked is from 2007. Season 2 starts soon though.

Suck it, gay Mormon!

That was a pretty fun challenge. The right person won, IMO. I really loved the look and shape of Leann's dress. Korto's jacket seemed questionable at first, but on the runway it came off pretty chic. I don't know how Blaine keeps making it through. I guess he's not boring and generally has a point of view.

It was great to see Laura. She had some really great comments and critiques. The Rachel "Chupacabra" Zoe plug was lame.
On the phone, Stella's boyfriend "Ratbones."

Keith probably had the worst personality on the show, and his designs were kind of boring. I like how he made the decision to play it safe in the Make Cars into Clothes challenge. Smart. I was sad to see Daniel's model Elena go because she is pretty damn cute. Cat Power girl keeps making good outfits, and Stella no longer annoys me - I like her!
Love. Stella.

I adore her. I don't think of her as a "character", but as being genuine. No airs about that woman at all.

Daniel cracked me up. It seemed as if at any moment he was going to pull a Scanners and his head was going to explode.

At least they (judges) got it right and Leanne rightfully won! The one thing that is outstanding so far about this season is how the lot of 'em (designers) are taking chances. And they're all so different. What's going to be interesting is when the Lifetime version of the series begins; which I think is near the end of THIS season.

How in the heck are they going to do that?

Stella's audition tape.

Keith actually seems like a fun person to be around in his video (see related videos in the link above).

ETA: I've read that Keith is actually a fun guy. You know, I wish they'd stop editing people into "characters". Takes so much out of the real fun from this show.
as a guy i will admit that i like watching project runway, ive watched pretty much all the seasons. this season is ok, none of them are true standouts yet. ps would someone give korto a caffeine enema? she looks like she's one syllable away from collapsing under the weight of her own boredom
post #27 of 51
Thanks for that link, smugbug.

I was sad to see Stella go. She really grew on me. I thought that her exit was very classy - though, I thought she was too hard on herself. Out of all of the designers left, I'm kind of mystified that Joe is still kicking. His personality and clothes suck. I was rooting for Kenley to win this challenge - just because she was obviously so touched by it. I liked her outfit, and she took a risk that didn't pay off by just producing one garment, but it's tough to beat Cat Power these days. Her designs are just plain nifty. I could have done without her spy routine in the workroom, however.

Yeah, the spy thing seemed forced. Sad to see Stella go, but I'm over Kenley. Cry if you want to, girl. It's not gonna change the outcome.

Re: the link - Is her name really Stella Barbarella? So rock-n-roll!

I'm sure its the editing, but I really can't stand Kenley anymore. And to think she was one of my faves. Jorell's comment that her dress looking like Mickey Mouse was spot on.

Sad to see Blayne go, but it was his time. Terri as well. She had like four patterns and made the same thing every time. And I'm not the biggest Keith fan, but I felt bad that he was paired with her. I knew she would try and blame the loss on him, but the editors did a good job of showing Keith attempting to help and Terri pushing him away.

I really loved Leann's dress, but she can't win everything I suppose. Jorell's dress looked great, but I think I'm not totally in love with it because I can't see all the detailing on it due to my crappy TV. If Daniel hadn't pointed out the 7 layers of detail on the sleeve, I wouldn't have noticed. And for all Joe's bland outfits, I really dug this one. I think the bottom worked better than the top, but it was cohesive.

It was awesome to see some of the past contestants. I do love Cara. It's getting down to the wire, but right now I can't see anyone but Korto, Leann, and Jorell in Bryant PArk
post #30 of 51
Kenley did bug last episode. Her outfit was terrible, but I didn't like anybody's really. Joe is my least favorite of the remaining. Glad to see Teri go. She was way over-confident.

One thing that always crack me up on the show is the pre-challenge freak out. Like Heidi announces to the designers that Tim is going to be taking them somewhere, and then they cut to someone saying, "I was freaking out. I had no idea where Tim was taking us!" WTF? It happens every show.
Thread Starter
I'm sure a lot of that is staged, but I can also see how it's nerve wracking trying to figure out what the challenge could be. Also, I loved how the judges made fun of Suede for talking about himself in the 3rd person.

Last night's ep was fun. Dealing with kids and parents is always an extra challenge. Jorell's outfit was amazing. So happy he won. Korto's was also hip and fun. I was disappointed in LeAnn. She's usually so creative and her outfit was just so plain and frumpy. Kenley's dress was pretty, but it was the same thing she always makes. It's fine to want to stay true to yourself, but her insistence that she's not gonna listen to anyone is why she'll never learn and grow as a designer. And that's what this show is good for. Having really successful people in the field give you advice. Suede's outfit was a disaster, but it was also time for Joe to go. He's boring and cliche every time.

Down to 5. My prediction of who goes to Bryant Park remains.
Kenley is driving me nuts, now. That nasally voice, coupled with her immaturity, is thoroughly grating. It looks like she gets beaten up a bit in next week's episode.

I agree with your picks for the final 3.
Weeeeellll, I've already had a peek at the most recent Fashion Week collections. And there are SIX from PR that show.

I definitely pick Jorell, Leanne and Korto as the final three. I cannot stand Suede and am getting increasingly annoyed at Kenley. My god, girl: chill OUT.

Must admit that this season took awhile to warm up. There just seemed (at the beginning) way too many stereotypes and no real, REAL people with strong personalities. Save for Stella; which is why I immediately liked her.

Now, I can distinguish and I'm liking Leanne's quiet determination; Korto's matter of factness (and she seems pretty well grounded) - both her and Leanne have terrific creative focus, too. Jorell's "this is who I am, like it or leave it" attitude is appreciated as well!

I also read that the final 6 all presented at Bryant Park but I refuse to spoil myself by peeking at their collections. However, all 6 aren't in the running for the top prize. They do that so no one knows who the final three are.

I used to have the biggest crush on Kenley. The girl is breaking my heart with her shit attitude. She'll still get in the top three though.

Korto sucks. I don't get why the judges like her. Jorell's come a long way. I bet it'll be him, Leanne and and Kenley that go to BP. Korto's gonna melt down real soon and Suede is probably gone next week.

The judges like Korto because she creates great looks. They are always well executed and she diversifies - showing them she's not a one-trick pony. She takes risks, and Kenley does not. Kenley can only make clothes for Kenley. I can see Nina saying that she doesn't want to see the same 12 dresses walking down the catwalk at Bryant Park.

Edit: Just went through the photo gallery. Korto has made dresses, pants, jackets, and vests. Kenley has made dresses with cool prints on them - every time.
Yeah, I can't imagine that Kenley goes the distance. It looks like she has a runway meltdown next episode, so that should be weird.

LeAnn disappointed this week, but she did change the look midstream because of complaints from mom and daughter. Jerrell's was the best. Joe's was horrific. Glad to see him booted. Am officially tired of Kenley. She's ernest, which I like. But she's proving to be a big asshole.

Kenley's dead man walking.

Kenley had the worst outfit, but I get why they got rid of Suede. He'd been in the bottom four times in a row and there were no signs of improvement. But yeah, there's no way Kenley makes final 3, let alone takes the top prize.
Yeah, I think Kenley is toast next week. The judges might as well told her this week that she was gone last week. What a joke.

Although next week it looks like everyone has a runway meltdown, so who knows?

Never push someone in a corner because it'll make them fight harder. I gotta hand it to Kenley, her wedding and brides maid dresses were gorgeous!

LeAnn's dresses were a perfect fusion of soft and structured. Totally cute.

I wasn't feeling either of Korto and Jorell's dresses. But what little I saw of their collections via Tim's visit it does seem that they made the right choice in keeping Korto.

First time it's an all-girl final three!
Yeah, crazy. I feel bad for Jerrell, but they needed to keep Korto - she's just more interesting. Kenley and LeAnne knocked it out. I liked Tim's emotional moment. He's the best.

McQueen’s is on the left, Kenley’s on the right.

Yup, Kenley plagiarized. Still, she executed it brilliantly.
Her bridesmaid dress looked like something I could pick up at Banana Republic. I really wanted Jerrell to have that spot.
I was pulling for not who ended up winning. Avoiding spoilers until people have verified they've seen it.
Still disappointed that Kenley made it in over Jerrell. Taking her work over the course of the whole season plus the questionable design of the dress being attributed (possibly) to another designer? She should have been out of there. Wasn't a fan of her collection either.

On to Korto and LeAnne. Honestly, I'm surprised at who the judges picked. Perhaps to make up for Daniel not winning previously (LeAnne's style seems to be very similar to his)? All in all, I got tired of seeing that same petal thingy repeated in LeAnne's collection. Definitely one note. Korto should have won. I even liked the 2 dresses she banged out at the last minute.
Yeah, I felt Korto should have won as well. I thought both LeAnne's and Korto's collections were strong, but Korto's just looked better and more interesting out on the runway. Plus, as interesting as she is with her designs, LeAnne's attempts at the funny stuff always fall flat. Her post-win lines bugged the shit out of me. And her Saturn commercial....holy shit.

Kenley was super lucky to make it as far as she did, but it was a weak season - not personality-wise, but design-wise. Korto and LeAnne stood out the entire way.

With her deadpan delivery, stringy hair, glazed look in her eyes, and freaky smile, she reminds me of Shelley Duvall from The Shining.
she used the same petal scheme in every single frigging design, not to mention she used like 2.5 colors total. boring as hell. lame decision.

I'm happy that LeAnn won, but agree that Korto should have had the top spot. I think ultimately, the judges were worried about Korto's editing decisions. She doesn't know when to stop and ends up overworking things. Basically, LeAnn and Korto both do amazingly detailed designs, but LeAnn makes it look effortless whereas Korto's pieces look like a labor of love. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but that's where I think the judges differentiated the two.

I don't feel bad for Korto though. Although she doesn't get the hundred grand, almost all of the runner-ups have gone on to get national acclaim and a boost in their boutique sales. Uli made a shit-load of money after PR despite not winning (in fact, I believe her clothes are out selling Jeffrey's). There's a demand for Korto's design aesthetic that I think will boost her to the next level.
