Weirdest Movie Couples

Thread Starter
Anna Friel and Eddie Griffin - Irish Jam (2006)

Such a bad pairing I think it actually made me racist.

Nicolas Cage and Jessica Biel - Next (2007)

I just saw the trailer. They are a couple in the movie, right?
I'd say that Nicolas Cage and anyone who is at least slightly attractive is a pretty weird movie couple.
I'm going gay for this one....

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Christian Bale

Note: Not that I think Maggie is ugly
I'm still having a hard time with Sophie Marceau and David Spade in Lost & Found.
NOTHING BUT TROUBLE-Chevy Chase & Demi Moore--Sure.
My advice to you is to immediately cease all viewing of Lost & Found. And I say that as a David Spade fan (and Marceau jerker).

Edit: Fat Elvis, sub in relevant title/names and this applies to you as well.

Stacy Nelkin/Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Atkins - Halloween III and The Fog.

And by weird, I mean AWESOME.
Would Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Platt in Lake Placid count. They did have this weird sexual tension going on.

*sacred cow alert*

Woody Allen & Mariel Hemingway in MANHATTAN

Can't help but think she's gonna need a lot of therapy

John Wayne & Angie Dickinson-RIO BRAVO

Don't know if he's a fag or what, but sure seems uncomfortable with what she's offering.

While he goes back to Walter & the Dude, Ricky Nelson just creeps up from behind, ask what her interests are, who she be with, things to make her smile, what numbers to dial...

(yeah. fumbled that joke)

Timothy Hutton and Amy Madigan in THE DARK HALF.

EDIT: I predict this thread will transmorph into this PART 2.

I don't see the Rio Bravo one, I think Wayne sees Dickinson as a silly dame and doesn't pay her much mind because he has other things on his mind like the situation with the townspeople.

Manhattan I totally see however and thank you for calling it out.
I was talking about this to my roommate earlier, and here's one she suggested. I haven't seen the film, but based on appearances alone, I can't disagree:

Ralph Fiennes and Jennifer Lopez - Maid in Manhattan
post #13 of 84
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Mo'Nique in SHADOWBOXER.

To be fair, Nelkin is a robot for the last half of the film, so it's a little more understandable.
I'm going with David Carradine and Uma Thurman in the Kill Bill films. As written, I buy the relationship as believable but... Carradine being physically intimate with Thurman just seems like an inherently weird concept.
Actually my suggestion is still in theatres:

Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway
Jackie Chan and Shu Qi in GORGEOUS. Just wrong in so many ways, for so many reasons. Was Karen Mok really busy? She's a hell of a lot more age appropriate and still hotter than hell. Shu Qi looked a little young for Statham in TRANSPORTER, and she was older in that than she is in this. Tony Leung redefines flamingly homosexual here. This movie sucks and Stephen Chow's cameo is cut from the US version.

Paul Newman and Robert Redford are paired up with a couple of real Hot Marys in THE STING, respectively. I guess this was the filmmakers' way of encouraging female audiences that even the frumpiest woman could have a hunky Newman or Redford if only the cards fell the right way.
Adam Sandler and Emily Watson in Punch Drunk Love.
Too easy: Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall in The Shining.
Jeff Goldblum and his daughter in THE LOST WORLD.

But really, one that never fails to perplex me, and it's from a film I love unabashedly, is Amy Brenneman and DeNiro in HEAT. It's difficult enough given the awkward way their relationship is introduced and written throughout the film, but the two actors have zero chemistry. I don't dislike Brenneman, but she just doesn't have that lived-in quality that was needed for the role.

I see this joke/critique all the time and I don't get it. They're a perfect movie couple because psychologically (as to the characters) they make total sense as a couple.
Frankie and Johnny- Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Because at the time, it was Michelle f**ing Pfeiffer, playing a *waitress*. And Al f**ing Pacino, playing a goddamn *cook*. Nothing wrong with both professions, but Pacino & Pfeiffer were both highly glamorous acting stars then. I didn't buy those two for a minute.

Also, most pairings in Apatow-related comedies. I know I know, it's not looks that count & all that but come on... that kind of girls with that kind of guys? As a friend of me commented on Forgetting Sarah Marshall: S**t ain't like that! (nerdy slight-overweight gets dumped out of relationship with gorgeous succesful starlet, then bags even more gorgeous Hawaii resident?). Same goes for Knocked Up. And also, Jonah Hill type teenager getting more than the time of day from an Emma Stone type highschool chick? As if!
Don't get me wrong, I love Superbad, and got my laughs from all the others but on topic of this thread: don't buy it.

Ah hell, ain't nothing to get. Old Grant Grant rolls up with all his money, who could blame her (or something to that effect).

I'm going to call shenanigans on this one. I thought the relationship between the two felt perfectly right. Except for the Mother Theresa-esque amounts of patience they had to write in on her part. But the chemistry felt right on to me.
Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson in The Chase.

Yea, I don't think so.
Kate Winslett and Jack Black in The Holiday. I haven't seen it, but unless Black plays a billionaire, I don't see this happening.
I think any of the recent movies where guys like Seth Rogen and Simon Pegg are starring alongside women considerably more attractive than they are. Not that either of those guys aren't great, but God bless 'em.

Arnold and Sharon Stone from Total Recall. That's a fun one.

Woody Allen and most of the women he fantasy-casts alongside himself. Sure, a sense of humor goes a long way, but hello, nerd wish fulfillment.
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Three movies and I never once bought them as a couple. Zero heat, zero chemistry.

Howard on the other hand looked ready to gobble ol' Parker up from the get go.

Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci in Casino.

Nasty.

EVE and Wall*E.
Anakin and Padme. You can win a girl over by telling her obsessed with her you are? There's some nerd wish fulfillment. Has George Lucas been near a woman since his divorce in the early 80s?
Campbell Scott and Dermot Mulroney in LONGTIME COMPANION. Sure, in Campbell Scott's dreams maybe.

He did fuck Linda Ronstadt. That scamp got around.

Eric Roberts and Meg Foster in BEST OF THE BEST 2. I'm not joking. It was just, I dunno, weird.

I've never seen this movie, but for some reason all I can think of is two hours of them staring at each other, punctuated every so often by Roberts crying like a baby.
I never bought Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields.

Didn't Pauly Shore do a movie with Carla Gugino?

That's part of the transcendent nature of the pairing. You don't have to see the movie to realize how strange it is.

But for the sake of an example, there's a scene where Meg is in the broadcast studio (she's a news anchor, see), and Roberts comes in as they're going to air to tell her his son's been attacked by some goons. She tells him she can't help because she's about to go on, and he gets mad at her for worrying about nothing but her job. "And you're worried about your job." That's how he says it. And she sort of stares at him for a moment as he leaves the studio.
That's what Meg Foster does. She looks at people. Real good like.

EDIT: Shia LeBouf and Megan Fox. Uh uh.

Bruce Willis/Sarah Jessic Parker- STRIKING DISTANCE!

That one bugged me. But that whole movie bugged me.

Oddly enough I'm cool with Swayze and Hunt's hookup in Next of Kin.

Speaking of The Swayze, Jennifer Grey? Really?

Well, she was a single mom. Her standards were severely lowered. As cool asJack is in real life (as a cucumber), Nicholson is guilty of shoplifting the pootie in this one. Not a big stretch for me.
