80's Draft: Discussion - Page 52

No.
I recommend it at some point.

Hmm. Always see the ending as the natural conclusion to the Vietnam allegory. When institutional bureaucracy betrays honor, the system breaks down. Cruise is the representation of the unstable, resulting darkness.
The Company of Wolves , good one.
Last Crusade was not one of the huge sequels I mentioned earlier, thought it is nice to see all three Indy films make the cut.
Streets of Fire!!!! Can't believe I forgot this! The only Michael Paré movie worth rewatching!
Hammerhead's pick is what it means to be young.
The best thing about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is that everyone can agree it's the worst Indy film, and it makes LC's reworkings of Raiders more palatable. Streets of Fire, shocked it took this long, but then Django's not drafting.
Nice pick, Hammerhead!

Don't think Walter Hill ever quite recovered from this (box-office)failure.
I hate Hammerhead so much. That the pick I was logging into take the second I got on a break. Fuck him. Oh well.
so the eighties draft is almost over and _______ _ _ ___ wasn't picked.

awesome.
Streets of Fire. Never cared for that one.

There's still quite a bit out there. Especially in the Vietnam area in my mind.
That franchise has been murdered. By it's fans as much as by it's creator. It will never be cool again.

I am pleased that Indy will probably survive though.

I had three alternates that kinda worked in my theme, and one of them is legitimately great. Surprised they weren't touched.

I even still like the franchise, but let's face it, 3/4 of it is still a weak ass film.

There's another franchise I'm still pissed hasn't popped up in Round 5. Eternal proof that the guy playing that character will never get the respect he deserves.

I honestly can't remember whether I've seen the whole thing, or just clips.

My eternal alternate. I was this close to picking it every day.

My choice to go non-genre left one of my favorite directors out in the cold. There's another of his flicks (yet unpicked) I like a lot more though.

The first rule of Breakfast Club is, you do not talk about Breakfast Club.

Several quality titles left on my pick list. Even though it only slightly fits my theme, I had to go for Streets. It's the quintessential Eighties pop-style movie.
We are missing 2 or 3 people, right?
can we start name droping movies?
I think we should.
If my math is right, only four picks remain.
How about making another thread for the movies that where left behind?

I think with whats left on the table we could have had a dozen or so more drafters that would have come up with legitimate good drafts when everything is said and done.
I probably would've picked War of the Roses at some point if I'd seen it some time in the last 5 years.
War of the Roses would have been inelegible though.

Go for it.

The Life and Times of Harvey Milk. That was the other one I had been thinking other than Killing Fields. Good to see that it's up there Rath.

I'm gonna post over in Jan's thread. If that's alright with everyone. If not, let me know ASAP.

Shit, you're right. Cut off's August 89. WOTR, December 89.
I was aware of that movie though and would have probably picked it if it would have been eligible. I saw it again about a year ago and it is still a solid flick that is surprisingly mean. And Mrs. Turner was hot indeed 20 years ago.

Dre: no (Sea Of) Love? Really?

Malice: the template for the most boring genre on earth: the twisty-turny decidedly unerotic erotic thriller. See (or don't): Consenting Adults.
All I remember from Consenting Adults is when I worked in a homegrown video store and the poster had Kline's gigantic coiffed moustache.

Also, POSSESSION. Cool.
Hope you old school guys do that top ten picks list Strax talked about at the beginning. Would love to read it!
I like Sea of Love okay, haven't seen it in forever, remember it being goodish. Pacula's slide was one of the saddest things ever. Much like John McT's.
Possession is like the orignal Inside. Or like Kubrick tackling a leftover Cronenberg script from the late 70s. Whichever description floats your boat more.

Your right! I misread the release date.
Since War of the Roses cannot be used I'll pick The Osterman Weekend.
I almost stumbled onto a theme -- 4 out of my 6 picks had FX by ILM.
Mine is pretty clear(and i fully understand that some of those movies are just plain bad)
Paying homage to the Practical Special Effects gurus of the 80's.

If i had my way, my draft would have been
1) The Thing
2) American Werewolf
3) The Terminator
4) Gremlins
5) Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal.

Also, my picks are color coded according to the font on the poster. And you have to "reveal" werewolf. Get it?
Didn't want my list to be all horror, so these deserving films didn't make the cut-
The Beyond
Gates Of Hell
Night Of The Creeps
Day Of The Dead
Lair Of The White Worm
Original list was something along the lines of 'Old Gods Not Yet Dead': the 80's by the 70's

1. Right Stuff- Kaufman
2. Blow Out- DePalma
3. Mosquito Coast--Schrader/ Weir
4. Red Dawn--Milius
5. Reds--Beatty
5. Heaven's Gate--Ciminio

All I remember from Consenting Adults is Carl Cunningham.

Yeah, I had to laugh at that. Good idea.
Not that anybody will care, but if I had signed up for this I would have gone with an up "Up All Night" theme.

AFTER HOURS
MIRACLE MILE
INTO THE NIGHT
SOMETHING WILD
ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING
THE NIGHT BEFORE
I started out just picking movies that had a good combo of quality, nostalgia, and cultural impact. But I guess I can now say that a rough theme is that they all provide social commentary regarding the socio-political issues of the day. Race, class, gender... all the hot topics are there.
Except for my bonus pick, all five of my films were released within about 10 months of each other. Didn't mean to do that. Just happened that way.
There's no theme to mine, just tried to represent as many different genres as the draft allowed, but also to make sure that each film is a little time capsule of the period. I think all my picks hold up today (yes, even When Harry Met Sally... ) as good to great films if you were seeing them for the first time. But they are also very much representative of the period in which they were made. They're 80's films you don't have to make apologies for when throwing them on.
Man, I thought I knew my stuff but there's like 95 films chosen, including bonus round, that I haven't seen. My queue is going to need updating.

On the plus side, I chose a film that Dre hadn't seen.
I guess my perfect draft would have been:

1. Blade Runner (go figure)
2. Road Warrior
3. Mosquito Coast
4. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
5. First Blood
Bonus: Frantic or Salvador

So really, I did pretty well for what I was after(2 out of 5 for the main draft). Films I totally love and can watch over and over, with the exception of the bonus picks, which aren't films I can watch as frequently(although they're great). No way in hell Road Warrior would have made it to round 2 though.
