The "Films that deserve better dvd sets" thread....

Personally, this might as well be called "No more bare bones releases" or "Criterion should conquer the dvd world", but what the hell, just bitch and rant about films you love that deserve better dvd treatment; here I go:
-"Stalker", which Criterion should fu++ing give us a great transfer and set of this one...a feature with sci-fi filmakers and/or writers disscusing the film would be aces.
-"Night of the Hunter" deserves a better disc as well, doesnt it?
Many, many Criterion discs are pretty bare.

Top of my list:

In the UK we got this

version of Jesse James.

The features aren't too interesting but the DVD case is actually a 40 page book which goes into the mythology of Jesse James and is absolutely fascinating as well as beautifully presented.
Ginger Snaps. Actually the Canadian DVD is great, but it needs to be available everywhere. Our release is embarrassing - bad cover art, fullscreen, no features.
Road Fucking Warrior. I finally broke down and bought the shitty single disc set simply because it was five bucks at Best Buy and I really wanted to watch it.
We can't even buy the Road Warrior over here. You either buy the entire trilogy or nothing at all. Then again the Brits have some bizarre gaps in our DVDs, like the fact neither of the Addams Family movies are available to buy over here.
I have plenty of literature on Jesse James. I want more features related to the film.
What's great is that the stuff is written by Dominik and other people involved in the production. Plus the background is really helpful for a Brit viewer with very little idea about the Jesse James legacy.
Forgive me, for I'm about to totally cheat, but The motherfucking Larry Sanders show needs to come out in full season sets or I'm going to take HBO studios hostage.

Edit: to keep it on topic, I'd like to see a more in depth DVD of The Big Lebowski. Ditto that to every other Coen Bros. film.

In that case, f you.

Same here. I figured buying it over the weekend at that price would automatically lead to an announcement of an SE this week. No dice yet. But seeing DOOMSDAY made me want to revisit it so I'm glad I finally got it, lame disc and all.

Want better discs of EXTREME PREJUDICE and JOHNNY HANDOMSE. Those both have the worst transfers I've seen for theatrically released films.

You're probably better off on that count.

We all have our vices. You have Robert Jordan and Star Wars, I have Home Alone and The Addams Family.

FAREWELL, MY LOVELY--shitty transfer, no bonus material for this underrated take on Marlowe

PARALLAX VIEW--favorite of the paranoid thriller genre deserves some special features

WHITE LIGHTNING--shitty GATOR is WS but not the kickass original? Fuck you, Hollywood!

DEADLY COMPANIONS/ CONVOY--Peckinpah footnotes, but come on...look what they did for OSTERMAN WEEKEND!
The early films of Zhang Yimou (Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou, etc.). His brilliant use of color REALLY deserves discs with better transfers.
Howbout a WIDESCREEN version of THE SHADOW (amongst others), Universal? How did that flick get a barebones FS version around the same time that even STREETFIGHTER, DRAGONHEART, etc. got pretty stacked special editions in the proper aspect ratio?

I would have really liked Disney to have shelled out a few more bucks for music rights, so my Muppet Show seasons weren't missing whole skits/songs.

I'll ditto ROAD WARRIOR. FYI: You can pay a couple extra bucks and get the non-snapcase double feature with THUNDERDOME currently.

I was really holding out for 2-disc-per-flick special edition LETHAL WEAPON set (like the nice DIE HARD one), but grabbed a cheap and slim quadruple feature instead.

No love for the Mel Gibson franchises, WB? Or are you holding out for BluRay?

I'd also like a better version of GODZILLA VS MEGALON to replace that crappy-transfer public domain dvd I have.
I vote for a balls to the wall Gymkata special edition. But then again, I think that film is the height of human perfection.

There is already a blu-ray edition of Lethal Weapon. It's fucking awful.
I'm looking for any fucking DVD release for The Perfect Weapon. There is no fucking love in this world for Jeff Speakman.

Bottle Rocket, The Darjeeling Limited, The Fountain
post #21 of 68
Bottle Rocket is getting released by Criterion, so you're winning already!
That Mad Max two-pack is fullscreen only though.

And Spike, I most certainly do NOT have Robert Jordan!

Indeed it is and I'm longing for it. But since it technically isn't out yet even though it was announced I put it down anyways.

Ooh thanks for the warning. WTF. I guess the rationale is if I like a bargain I don't need to see the whole picture. F**kers.

Please count me in for the "aww, shit" sentiment...this is why I have even avoided local box sets of the Road warrior films.
Looking for a much more accessible version of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

I'm not gonna shell out 30 bucks for a bare bones dvd.

Fuck, I wouldn't even shell out 30 bucks for a dvd.
A Vista Series like edition of the Rocketeer, the current version makes the film look worst then when I saw it at the bleeding drive in, and is not anamorphic. Same goes for Dick Tracy the thought of that film in HD makes my eyes weep, plus I am sure Warren would be more than happy to spend some time, especially considering how much of it they played at the Oscars.

Beetlejuice would be on here, but Warner's is fixing that.

Also considering the star power I think Glengarry Glen Ross could use a visit to Criterion.
Phantasm II needs a god damn region 1 release, god damn it!
As always, Annie Hall and Badlands are at the top of my fucking list. Badlands especially needs an upgrade, cuz the current DVD transfer is pretty bad. Re-Master that shit.
Godzilla vs Megalon is no longer public domain, so there is some hope for that.

I forgot about Badlands, hell yes.

Annie Hall hells yes too, but I don't think it's going to happen.
My dream special feature would be a Woody Allen and Diane Keaton commentary track for Annie Hall, the first time he's seen it in decades. Just listening to him squirm while Diane Keaton waxes nostalgic (in my imagination, this is how it plays out) would make my lifetime.

But really, Woody Allen movies don't need special features. Something like Zelig, maybe could benefit, but most of his stuff doesn't need it.

I just watched Badlands for the first time last night and I remember thinking to myself that this needed the treatment that Days of Heaven got.

The only thing more awkward would be a Woody/Mia Farrow commentary on Husbands and Wives.

VELVET GOLDMINE.

I KNOW I did not make up that extended love scene between Christian Bale and Ewan McGregor. There's also a series of features from an old UK edition on YouTube, and it'd be nice to see the film get proper treatment in the US.

I mean c'mon, it's Todd Haynes for the love of Bowie.
Starman is another movie, it's fullscreen release doesn't do it justice.

I'd also like a feature stacked 'There Will Be Blood.' Maybe some of us WANT to watch a bunch of people in the desert making a movie, Mr. Anderson.

'Ratatouille' with meaningful features along the lines of The Incredibles, instead of the fluff of the current release.
Warner Brothers needs to do something about the Golden Harvest library they've got rotting in a fucking barn somewhere. They bought it in 1999. It's seriously like half the movies* made in Hong Kong from 1993-1998. Just festering away somewhere.

Don't think that WB has these films, but someone needs to reissue the damn Film City/Milkyway movies. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. A HERO NEVER DIES. THE LONGEST NITE. The Universe DVDs are shit. Unspeakably poor. If Criterion wasn't like the DVD answer to the park in FIST OF FURY, they'd have released them years ago.

*Ok, that's hyperbole. Half of the major, big deal movies made during that time period is more accurate. Half the ones you might give a damn about.

I can't believe I forgot this.

Sadly since Cars got the same treatment before Ratatouille I fear Wall-E will suffer the same fate.

The Star Wars Trilogy.

Seriously, that doc Empire of Dreams, some trailers and a game demo just don't cut it for three of the most beloved movies of all time.

It's a shame, because there are a ton of documentaries throughout the years. They should just release a disc collecting those at this point.

I remember liking "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga" (narrated by Mark Hammil) that I had taped off of HBO. It had clips of Phil Tippet (or someone) harrassing people with a Salacious Crumb puppet. Infinitely more entertaining than the prequel trilogy.

EDIT: Someone has it up on Youtube.
Probably not enough merchadise options in documentaries to suit George.

Phil Tippet action figure? Ben Burtt cookie jar? John Williams cereal?

I remember "From Star Wars to Jedi". When I was a kid, we didn't have cable, so I went to a friends house and demanded we watch it. It was Star Wars, there just wasn't any other way it was going to go down.

I thought Ratatouille had a bunch of features, at least on my blu-ray, if you watch the interactive commentary, it has a shit ton of features that cut in throughout the whole movie to show you how they researched or filmed something, along with a regular Brad Bird commentary. All this on top of the "Your friend the rat" short. Was this not on the regular DVD?
I'm still waiting for Peter Weir's Fearless to get something other than the full-screen and snaplock case treatment.

According to the back of my Ratatouille DVD case

Deleted Scenes
My Friend The Rat
Fine Food & Film Featurette
Lifted: The Short Film

That's all we got. So yeah, sounds like the Blu-Ray's a bit more loaded.

Yeah, but it'll sell to the fans who've been tracking down bootlegs at cons/internet. Course, by that rationale, SW HOLIDAY SPECIAL would have been released already. I stand by it. I'd watch a LOTR Extended Edition amount of Behind the Scenes stuff on the original trilogy (if it existed).

Yeah, you're right. I took a look online to see if it was on the DVD, because even on the blu-ray, it's hard to find. I didn't even know it was on there until I went looking through all the features.

That sucks, wanna borrow mine?
