Need for Speed: Undercover

Can't wait for your full write up Alex. I've skipped this generation's NFS games so far, except a few races at a friend's place. I loved the first street racing NFS on PS2 a few years ago. Not the open world one, that one was crap.

I don't know about the story and FMV though. And they're being pretty stingy with the info when Midnight Club LA has so many trailers out there.

I'll be completely honest (as I was with the developers)- I'm not a big Need for Speed fan. I haven't been able to get into the last few games because I feel it just really lost its way- I used to love the Hot Pursuit titles and cop chase aspect of the game, but I could give a shit less what kind of spoilers or shocks my car has, or just straight up racing like with Pro Street.

But the game definitely has some points that's got me interested in the series again.... let's just say it looks like this one's heading back in an old direction.

Live action cutscenes worked for C&C. Then again, they were good games.

I don't think we're at the point yet where car games are photorealistic enough (even GT) to make this seamless.

I'd rather have zero cutscenes and then have them spend the extra money on development.

See Alex, I'm a huge car guy, but don't have the money to even change the air intake on my current ride, so the customization/pure racing is what gets me to keep going back. When they introduced the "story" and open world on PS2 it lost me completely. But if they can bring in some awesome pursuit again, I'll definitely give it a chance but likely only if MC:LA doesn't get white hot reviews.

Article's going to be a tiny bit delayed (should have it up tomorrow afternoon) but if anyone wants to check out the first trailer, got it up on our new youtube page in high def- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UjQVnd_MXc

Enjoy, guys. Any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Great write up Alex. I think you might have actually sold me on this over MC:LA. How much of the FMV did you see? Is it completely cheese ball, or is it fun cheese ball like they're making Need For Speed: Fast and Furious?

What kind of number of cars are we looking at? Is the customization still there or are you just ripping off the cars you're assigned to?

Looks really fun cheese ball. They didn't really show us much of it, but here, someone put up a bit of the footage we saw on Youtube- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSVZ-TdVPwQ

That's the bit of improv I mentioned in the first article. Definitely sold us on the potential of the performances.

Customization, yes, plenty of it if you want it, although it's apparently not required at all. No set number of cars yet besides "lots".

Really, just some gameplay footage that shows how the cars can dance around with ease will go a long way towards selling this game to people who would have otherwise not paid any attention it it.

I saw that map and immediately thought "Burnout Paradise ripoff".

Which confuses me, since BP is hardly a breakout success aside from the post-release support.

To be honest, i'll ignore. The cutscenes are a gimmick trying to make the thing appear more realistic-looking, whilst it sounds like it's just trying to outdo BP in everything, including the forgiving physics. Cheers for the heads up all the same Alex.

Nice write up Alex. You've actually gotten me pretty interested in this one, and I've already been a so so fan of the series in general. I've played a couple of the recent ones on the PSP and on the 360 I've got Most Wanted and recently picked up Carbon on the cheap. They're almost carbon (d'oh!) copies of each other in most respects, but they're a blast to play as far as I'm concerned. The Pro Street demo made me want to hurt myself so I'll be avoiding that one until the end of time, but Undercover sounds pretty cool, and if nothing else I'm curious to see how the dynamic music cues fit in.

Cool, thanks guys. I'm not really trying to sell anyone on the game, per say, just trying to give my honest opinions of it. Going into the day I was real worried that this would be the first time I'd have a negative view of the game, but they definitely did enough to impress me and make me excited about it. We'll still see how it all comes together, though.

Random side note- the trailer (which I guess was one of the first places it was available on the internet) at one point became the #85th most watched video in South Korea yesterday.

A review of Midnight Club LA isn't in the cards by any chance, is it? I've been anticipating that since I bought my 360, and almost every flaw in NFS: Undercover was nonexistent by the time MC3 rolled around.

Not unless Rockstar sends me a copy, frankly. Too many other things on my list!

But I hear it's pretty good. I'm more excited but what's in store for Paradise next year- they have a ton of stuff on the way- http://criteriongames.com/

OK, that Party Box might very well coerce me to pick up the game at last. My biggest complaint (not being able to see jack shit coming down the road) might be less an issue now that I have a better TV. And too much love is going into that thing for there not to be any fun to be had.

Wow, Criterion is supporting the fuck out of their game. Wish other developers would do the same, I'm looking at you Mass Effect!!

I got Midnight Club LA yesterday thru gamefly. I really like it. Problem I had with Burnout Paradise was that it was too fast. Everything blurring past me made it hard to see the next turn and also hated that everything you touched caused you to crash your car. I still like the game, but I'm having a better time with Midnight Club right now.

Midnight Club is fun. The customization is pretty deep and the sense of speed is great. Also, this is the first racing game that has a cockpit view that I could actually drive in. Races are a little tough but that was always my favorite thing about the Midnight Club series. I really don't think you can go wrong with this one.
